Samsung to drop Smartphone?

Samsung to drop Smartphone? 03/14/2003 02:10 PM

Gossip is more properly the domain of Gawker, our sibling blog, but there's a rumor going around that Samsung is dropping its plans to build a Microsoft Smartphone-powered cellphone, and is going to use Symbian's Series 60 operating system instead. Samsung would have been the only major cellphone manufacturer to use Smartphone, so losing them would be a bit of a blow.

Motorola E680i Linux Smartphone

Motorola E680i Linux Smartphone 03/25/2005 09:32 AM

moto_e680i.jpgMobileBurn has details on the other Motorola phone to be announced at M3, the Linux-based E680i. The touchscreen smartphone is oriented around music and video playback, but you'll be able to run a variety of applications on the system, including 3D games. It's exactly the kind of form factor I can't hang with in a smartphone, but it looks pretty decent if you like pen-based interfaces and the tweakability that Linux provides.

Oh, and it can pair up with Motorola's new Bluetooth headphones. Saucy.

Linux may become the preferred operating system in a full-featured mobile device and handset market in which "there is no economic reason to question why growth will not be explosive," according to Seamus McAteer, senior analyst and managing partner, Zelos Group. "The mass adoption of full-featured handsets will be disruptive," adds McAteer. McAteer is author of a Zelos Group report, Defining the Market for Full-Feature Handsets, which forecasts annual sales of 290 million, or 43 percent of the global handset market, by 2008 for full-featured handsets -- mobile phones that incorporate full-featured operating systems. Based on Zelos Group's analysis, the long-term prospects for Linux as the preferred operating system for connected devices are "very strong." Zelos Group scored all mobile platforms across five criteria: business viability, completeness, cost, end user appeal and openness. Linux scored highest on the two criteria that matter most to OEMs and carriers: openness and low cost. Microsoft scored lowest in these criteria.

PDA growth in the age of the smartphone

PDA growth in the age of the smartphone 10/29/2003 12:11 AM

A recent article in the Economist questions whether or not the PDA market will continue to grow in the face of competition from smartphones and other Web-enabled mobile devices.

Although final sales figures are not yet available, it seems very likely that sales of smartphones overtook sales of PDAs in the third quarter of this year.

The article echos the findings of an IDC press release from August 2003. Among their key findings:

• Worldwide units shipment of handheld devices will decrease by 8.4% in 2003.

•On the strength of improved form factors, platforms, component technology, and lower price points, converged mobile devices have become increasingly accessible to mass mobile phone user.

Samsung Adds DivX Support via Firmware
Update

Samsung Adds DivX Support via Firmware
Update
07/28/2004 01:20 PM

img_DivX01.jpg imageNow I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but do any of the current movie download services offer their wares in DivX format? Because if not, where exactly does Samsung, when detailing its plans to upgrade some of its DVD player firmware to support DivX, intend its customers to get the files that "can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time?" Surely not the internet. That would be tantamount to murdering film carpenters' entire families.

That aside, DivX firmware updates for Samsung players from the company itself is plus plus. Now if they'd throw in a little XviD flavor we could stream the movies we've already (legally, for honest) ripped. Update: Oh, hey, look at the image that I put up myself. I'm mostly functional! (Thanks, Antii!)

Also, Happy Birthday, Modbuster!

H2O Audio SV i700 Waterproof MP3 Housing

H2O Audio SV i700 Waterproof MP3 Housing 09/09/2004 07:52 PM

SVi700_sm.jpg imageAnders Steele (someone's mom had high hopes) sent me this image of the H2O Audio SV i700 MP3 player that I thought I'd pass along. H2O Audio doesn't make the MP3 player inside - that's an iRiver iFP-870 - but instead designed the waterproof housing and fully submirsible headphones. You can even use regular headphones while the unit is still inside the housing, or remove it for regular, dry land daily use. The SV i700 housing is a lot better than the earlier H2O models, if for no other reason because it's not ridiculously huge anymore.

iPod Firmware Petition

iPod Firmware Petition 07/22/2004 01:22 PM
With the recent release of the 4G iPods, Apple released an iPod firmware update adding new features/functionality to the iPod. Unfortunately, the new features are only available to 4G ("click wheel") iPods?leaving the not-so-old 3G iPods in the dust. When I first heard about this, my first response was, "Why can?t they just release the same firmware upgrade for both the 3G and 4G models?" I don?t know about models older than 3G, but as far as I know, the new model is exactly the same as the 3G. The firmware could easily work for both. This seems to be a marketing ploy on Apple?s part. Get the people who want these simple new features to buy a whole new iPod. Well, people aren?t buying it. Enter the Apple iPod Firmware Petition, signed by over 3,000 people when this entry was posted, which states the following:
To: Apple Computer We, the owners of previous models of the Apple iPod (1G/2G/3G), believe that we have been snubbed by Apple. With each new generation some or many of the new features added are only software changes, and could be easily added to past iPods with a firmware update. But instead of updating older iPods, Apple has simply ignored older users. We believe that any new improvements that can be added via firmware to the older generation iPods should be instituted Sincerely, The Undersigned
Being a 3G 15GB owner myself, I must agree. How about you?
