In sharp contrast to the harmless pranks that will be played on April Fools' Day, deceptive phishing schemes are no laughing matter. To strike a blow against criminals who prey on Internet users, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), National Consumers League and Microsoft Corp. today urged consumers to beware of phishing schemes aimed at stealing their identities.

Identity Theft, Auction Scams Top The
List Of Scams Again

Identity Theft, Auction Scams Top The
List Of Scams Again
02/01/2005 09:43 PM
It's unlikely to surprise many people but identity theft and aucti on scams where the seller never ships the item topped the list of scam complaints to the FTC. Of course, what the FTC doesn't break down is how many of the identity theft complaints happened online vs. those caused by a lost wallet or checkbook. Just last week, a study suggested that online identity theft really isn't a very big problem. Also, as the original article notes, it's tough to tell whether the quantity of scams increased, or just that consumers are more aware of them and know to report them. Update: Meanwhile, over in the UK, it looks like d ifferent kinds of scams are popular, with typical confidence scams leading the way.

Internet Savvy Folks Fall For Phisher
Scams

Internet Savvy Folks Fall For Phisher
Scams
11/05/2003 06:04 PM
It's almost impossible these days not to see a story or two a day about the latest "phisher" scam, where a con artist sends an email looking as though it's from a trusted company such as eBay or a well known bank, and asking people to fill out a form that includes basically every little bit of information anyone would need to know to access all of their bank accounts and credit cards. You might be wondering who falls for this sort of thing, and the answer is that an awful lot of people do - and many claim to be internet savvy professionals. In many cases, they get the email and they fill out the form in a rush, and then realize it as soon as they hit the submit button. Scammers claim (and you have to take any such claims with a grain of salt) that such phisher emails yield about a 10% hit rate - which is pretty damn high. The folks who were conned often couldn't even remember filling out the form. Some, who track their finances online caught fraudulent transactions quickly, but had no idea how the info got out. Next thing someone needs to do is try to tie up a 419 Nigerian scam with a phisher scam and create ultimate email scam.

09/13/2004 03:06 AM
German company RapidSolution Software has released the Windows software Tunebite. Music tracks purchased from the Internet are copy-protected and involve important restrictions for many users when they are played back. With the option to re-record them while they are played, Tunebite legally provides the user with new music files without restrictions. This ensures that music bought from Apple iTunes, Sony Connect, AOL or other music platforms in the Internet can be played back and listened to from everywhere. [PRWEB Sep 13, 2004]

Should You Skip Out On Internet Banking?

Should You Skip Out On Internet Banking? 03/08/2004 11:04 PM
A security researcher is now claiming that everyone should avoid online banking because "it's no longer safe". The "no longer" part is a bit misleading, as he also says a home computer was "never" designed to be safe enough for online banking. The response, though, from a bankers' association (obviously a bit biased) seems to make a lot more sense. They point out that nothing online is completely secure, but that if users take the proper precautions they should be pretty safe. The proper response, then, is that these banks should do as much of that work as possible in getting their users up to speed on safer surfing techniques. However, to completely write-off online banking seems a bit excessive. Improving security should definitely be a priority, but that doesn't mean that the current solution doesn't work for now.
