Today, I wore my new NTK shirt to work and to the Google Xmas Party, and boy, did I ever get a lot of compliments. It reads: "They that can give up general purpose computers for the sake of a little eye candy deserve neither computers nor eye candy," a reference to Franklin's famous "They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security." Robots Suffer for Art's Sake 12/25/2004 05:13 PM
A new Wired article discusses the problem Hollywood seems to have with robots and technology in general. They seem to make a large number of movies in which technology in general and robots in particular are evil. Artist Fernando Orellana, among others, thinks Hollywood is wrong. Orellana has created a kinetic art piece called Unending Enclosure for the Art & Artificial Life International Competition that offers an alternate view of three robots that are frightened of humans.

The BBC reports that pedophilia is quite widespread in the UK. Law enforcement agencies there have taken serious measures to help combat this ongoing problem through the use of fake child porn websites and a child porn site blocking program. This new system that the UK has implemented has a two fold effect on possible pedophiles: 1) They are blocked from visiting the website they were trying to access. 2) The attempt to access a…

Free software, for the sake of regional
identity

Free software, for the sake of regional
identity
12/03/2003 08:44 AM
Nice Bruce Sterling editorial from this month's Wired on the move in Extremadura, Spain, to develop a local flavor of Linux:
The features may be mundane, but they add up to something quite new: a patriotic regional operating system. The emailer's logo is a stork, Extremadura's most beloved bird. The word processor is named after a famous local poet. The desktop is crammed with hallowed symbols of the homeland. Extremaduran schoolkids could stand up and pledge allegiance to this thing...

This deeply rooted regional approach could prove a more nurturing environment for Tux than either the EU, with its stifling bureaucracy, or the US, where lawyers for SCO are eager to sue the daylights out of anyone who dares to propagate the penguin. Right now, most of the action is in government, where officials are beginning to wake up to the advantages of open standards and malleable code - and not having to pay Americans for any of it. India is releasing Linux variations in local dialects from Assamese to Telugu. China, Japan, and South Korea are collaborating on their own OS. South Africa recently approved an open source strategy, and similar things are going on in Argentina, Australia, Bulgaria, Peru, and Ukraine.

Did Google Get Loud On Purpose?

Did Google Get Loud On Purpose? 08/13/2004 06:07 PM
Well, it's a ridiculously slow news day, so it's really no surprise that something like this might boil up. Following yesterday's efforts to give techies and investment types an extra reason to buy a copy of Playboy, IPO pundit Tom Taulli is (half jokingly... I think) rolling out the rumor that Google purposely pushed Playboy to get the interview out in order to have the SEC delay their IPO until slightly more favorable conditions existed. That would seem especially sneaky, and it's unlikely it's actually what happened. Though, if it is what they tried to do, it appears the plan didn't work. The SEC has made Google explain away the difference between their filings and the Playboy article, but otherwise has let the IPO move forward.

Nova Spivack raps it out.....

Communities of Purpose: The Third Type of Community

I've been thinking about different types of communities recently. Two forms of community that are often discussed are "communities of interest" where the members share a common set of interests (e.g. a community of people interested in Japanese culture), and "communities of practice" where the members share a common set of skills (e.g. a community of marketing professionals). To these I would add a third type called a "community of purpose," where the focus is on a shared goal (e.g. a political activist community or a community collaborating on a common project). Most existing community tools today are either focused on building communities of interest or communities of practice. But I am more interested in creating tools that help people create more productive communities of purpose. To do this we need to merge the functionality of groupware and knowledge management with emerging community tools for social networking, blogging, and wikis.

Trash Talk Getting Life and Purpose 04/09/2004 04:00 PM
Well, the web's a funny place, isn't it? Just the other day, I posted my random idea about a trash talk virus for Mac OS X. You know, virus is probably the wrong word. It's more of an ad-hoc network entertainment application. But that's not the point. Anyway, within a matter of a day or so it got some interesting traction. First off, Ross suggested that it be used to help track down the folks who screw up wireless networks...
