paddle_slips.jpgThey're slippers. They're ping-pong paddles. And so, for just about $33, SolidAlliance sells you the privilege of sticking your hand into your sweaty feet-holes during those times when ping-pong challenges present with an incredible sense of urgency. Available (presumably) in Japan, SolidAlliance also sells the USB Duck, which I've included a picture of after the jump.

Pong Mechanik 09/22/2004 12:44 PM

pong_mechanik.jpg imageI've linked to this once in the Bits remainders, but so many of you keep sending it in that you've convinced me it merits a whole post. Two German students have built an electro-mechanical version of Pong, replacing all the digital bits with pulleys and strings and electrical sensors. It is rather brilliant, perhaps I should not have been so hasty to pass it on. There's a fine video, too, which is narrated in German but has English subtitles.

And if they want to get really electro-retro-mechano-analog, I challenge them to an all wooden replication of Galaga, except instead of little bricks representing the laser shots, I want them to use real fire.

Mobile Games Go From Pong To Quake In 18
Months
12/11/2003 01:38 AM
It really wasn't that long ago that the various games found on mobile phones were the equivalent of the video games from two decades ago. However, it appears that m obile phone video games have gotten up to speed much, much faster. Part of this is because established game brands have jumped in headfirst, realizing that there's a real market here. Now, people are expecting that (ignoring the N-Gage) we'll start to see more mobile phones that are optimized for gaming. The more interesting aspect will be watching whether or not connected gaming takes off as well.

Starting tomorrow for the balance of the week, Siva Vaidhyanathan will be guest blooging about his new book, The Anarchist in the Library. I'll be caught up by the weekend, and back with good news next week. Sorry for the delay.

Go Simon or Please, Please Ping

Simon just posted this:

Blogs I would read a lot more often if only they pinged weblogs.com when they updated:

Without pings, they languish at the bottom of my blogroll where I won't notice or visit them. My blogroll is my only mechanism for keeping track of the blogs that I read regularly - aggregators just don't do it for me, and with tabbed browsing my blogroll is almost as efficient for staying up to date.

It doesn't have to be weblogs.com - a ping to blo.gs would be just as effective. [_Go _]

Simon is definitely on point here at least from the {InsertNewNameHere] perspective of my new RSS search engine.  We index in two ways but more frequently via monitoring www.weblogs.com.  We'll probably set up our own ping interface and hook to the blo.gs info if we can but getting into weblogs.com just makes sense.

Ping Plotter is an enhanced trace route program for Windows 95/98/NT. It does all the things a normal trace route program does - just faster (and better). It also adds some great features (graphing, enhanced statistics, long term monitoring, alerts, etc.). [Shareware $15.00 30 days 850 KB]

Google in our every ping

Google in our every ping 04/09/2004 03:56 PM
I noticed a little something while sitting next to a felow hax0r at the local coffee shop yesterday that made me realize just how deeply The Google had penetrated day-to-day *nixing.

A few years back the "international greeting" (as I called it) for checking whether or not you were online and with DNS was to type: ping yahoo.com. Now, it seems--I've noticed this switch in myself and others, but can't be sure just when it happened--this is: ping google.com.

It's not, mind you, that yahoo.com has become unreachable or unstable; just the Google has so come to represent the very essence of stability and reachability that it's made its way to our every ping.

I used to joke in my sysadmin days (I'm in recovery now) that the default for ping without argument should be ping yahoo.com. Now make that ping google.com.

In my copious free (read: should be sleeping) time I threw together a useful little Blosxom plugin to ping weblogs.com the first time my site is hit following a new weblog entry.

I intend to include most of the plugins I've mentioned thus far -- Weblogs.com Ping, Foreshortened RSS, Tiki, Readme, Buy from Amazon, Lucene-Powered Search, and TrackBack/Comment counts -- in my forthcoming alpha releases of Blosxom 2.0.
