Help to Students Through MSN
12/17/2003 01:24 AM

With the introduction of MSN® Encarta® Premium today in the United States, MSN unveiled details regarding expanded content and tools that will make homework -- particularly math -- easier for students. Powered by Design Science MathPlayer (TM) technology, Math Help in MSN Encarta Premium gives students step-by-step guidance with problems in commonly used textbooks as part of the Homework Center feature. Students will be able to select a textbook, navigate to a specific problem, and review detailed explanations by expert mathematicians on how to solve a similar problem. MSN Encarta Premium is available today in the United States and Japan1 as a stand-alone subscription service and will be available as a feature in the upcoming premier MSN subscription service called MSN Premium, scheduled to launch in the United States on Jan. 8, 2004.

When Makinde Adeagbo and 21 other undergraduate college students arrived here in June for a five-week computer-science training program on Microsoft's corporate campus, they were excited about the opportunity to get an inside look at life at Microsoft. Among the surprises: how much input everyone has in defining the products they work on; how much pride everyone takes in their job; and, of course, the free beverages Microsoft provides to employees.

Larry Summers, women, and jobs in math
and science
02/01/2005 09:38 PM

To judge from the latest nytimes.com it seems that Larry Summers, the president of Harvard, is still getting beaten up for saying that women might not be genetically adapted as well as men for careers in math and science.  None of the news articles go into the question of whether these are good enough careers that anyone should care about the racial or sexual composition of people in them.  More than half of medical students are women.  Every graduating MD will get a job and the average salaries in the career range from $150,000 to $300,000+ depending on specialty.  A new math or science PhD will compete with 700 other applicants for one job, usually paying less than $50,000 per year.  Most of them could have made far more money and had far more job security if they'd gotten a bachelor's in education at the state teacher's college and, at age 22, taken a job as a schoolteacher in a public school.

A lot more men than women choose to do seemingly irrational things such as become petty criminals, fly homebuilt helicopters, play video games, and keep tropical fish as pets (98 percent of the attendees at the American Cichlid Association convention that I last attended were male).  Should we be surprised that it is mostly men who spend 10 years banging their heads against an equation-filled blackboard in hopes of landing a $35,000/year post-doc job?

How girls learn about opportunities in

How girls learn about opportunities in
math, science, and engineering
03/17/2005 03:24 AM

A 17-year-old polo champion is visiting us from Argentina and today was my day to give her the grand tour of Boston.  Naturally the MIT campus was on our agenda.  MIT's new president, Susan Hockfield, rather than doing something interesting like starting a medical school, has made her first public action beating up on Larry Summers for his musings on why there aren't an equal number of women and men in super nerdy academic jobs.  Hockfield says that "The question we must ask as a society is not ‘can women excel in math, science and engineering?’ but ‘how can we encourage more women with exceptional abilities to pursue careers in these fields?’”  I felt proud to be doing my share.  I had brought a 17-year-old girl who can do anything she wants to with her life onto the MIT campus to be inspired.  What happened?  Just downstairs from Hockfield's office we ran into a woman who recently completed a Ph.D. in Aero/Astro, probably the most rigorous engineering department at MIT.  What did the woman engineer say to the 17-year-old?  "I'm not sure if I'll be able to get any job at all.  There are only about 10 universities that hire people in my area and the last one to have a job opening had more than 800 applicants."

[Spending the day with a young person is fraught with potential for humiliation.  She looked at my collection of 2000 LP records and asked "What are those?"  When I explained that they were records, she asked "What are records?"It is too bad that the Supreme Court won't let us execute 17-year-olds anymore...]

To hear people complaining these days you'd think that there were no more computer science students taking classes any more, and the three or four who were would never find jobs. It seems that's not true. Enrollment in computer science is definitely down, but people say the quality is much higher, as these are students who actually are interested in the topic, as opposed to those boom-year students who just studied it because they thought it would let them ride the wave to dot com riches. The schools also note that it's more difficult to find jobs, but they are placing the majority of their students in tech jobs.

The machine learning and perception group presents two new projects today. i2i uses dual cameras and stereo imaging techniques to offer a number of enhanced video conferencing capabilities. Founded on new computer algorithms, invented by the i2i team, the technology provides a virtual personal camera operator that tracks the user, panning and zooming in real time to improve the quality of visual communication. In addition, the technology can dynamically replace the background of a scene to make a user appear to be in a different location. i2i also introduces the concept of 3D Emoticons that takes traditional emoticons found in e-mail and messenger products to the next level by allowing three-dimensional objects to be inserted into a scene, such as a light bulb of inspiration that floats above the user's head.
