Sharp LL-151-3D Reviewed 12/29/2004 12:01 PM

sharpll1513d_rev.jpg imageThere's no doubt that the Sharp LL-151-3D is a cool product—3D displays without any goofy headgear is the double pluses. But are any of you guys actually using them? I can think of a few situations (medical, 3D imaging) where they'd be handy, but the 15-inch size seems a little down market for hot-to-trot medical researchers/Science Officers. And it's too expensive for gaming, costing more than most gaming PCs do in total. Anyway, just curious. There's got to be a way I can justify buying one for work.

Sharp CE-MR01

Sharp CE-MR01 12/27/2004 01:28 PM

This year definitely was the year of the streaming media device. Sharp is introducing a new unit in Japan early next year, called the CE-MR01, designed to stream a variety of image and movie formats over Wi-Fi. And it looks nice and all (you really can't tell with these things until you use the interface), but I can't help but wonder if they are just a flash in the pan.

DVDs are still a dominant content delivery platform for movies and television, which means everyone will need a DVD player. PVRs with hard drives are common for people with cable and satellite television. There are plenty of set-top boxes already, I'm saying. Since these streaming media devices are basically just decoding chipsets with Wi-Fi and Ethernet, why do they need to be separate units at all? I bet by this time next year, you'll be hard pressed to buy a DVD player that doesn't do streaming media from a network share.

T-Mobile Sharp TM200 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

tmo_tm200.jpg imageT-Mobile Deutschland has announced the Sharp TM200, billed as Europe's first 2-megapixel cameraphone. The tri-band GSM clam shell also has an LED flash and a built-in, SD-reading MP3 player, as well as a good-sized 262k color screen. And it has autofocus—I still can't get my head around how that works with no moving parts. It's relatively inexpensive at €150 (with contract, of course). I'm looking forward to seeing some of the images taken with its HAL-like camera.

I could tell you all about this new Sharp SM-SX300-H amplifier's delta sigma chips and 256-bit oversampling, or maybe regale you with stories about its copper chassis, gold-plated connectors, and it's Ohms -- oh lord, does it have Ohms -- but what you really are interested in is the fact that it looks very shi shi and costs about $17,000. Why? Because the inside is filled with solid gold pudding, and developing non-conductive golden pudding is the sort of science that doesn't come cheap.

Sharp LL-171A-B LCD Monitor Reviewed

Sharp LL-171A-B LCD Monitor Reviewed 08/20/2004 08:05 AM

sharp_2057full.jpg imageTrusted Reviews takes a look at the Sharp LL-171A-B, a 17-inch LCD flat panel monitor that forgoes some of the extras (like a DVI input) but still keeps a few pleasant oddities like built-in speakers (which I've never been a huge fan of, but they do at least give Sharp an excuse to add a headphone jack) and an integrated power supply. The native 1,280 by 1,024 pixel screen pulls a few tricks to keep the cost down - it uses just a 6-bit controller to handle the colors instead of the regular 8-bit one - but Trusted Reviews says the limited color range is hardly noticeable. With prices in the $460 range (pre-order), the Sharp looks like a decent, if not mind-blowing monitor from a company with a good name. For a little bit more money, though, there are probably less skimped-upon options.

Speaking of, after my used monitor debacle this week (yeah, I know, but I've had good luck before), if anyone knows of a place to get good-quality, low-markup monitors (LCD or CRT) in the NYC area, let me know.

Sharp AX-HC1: Superheated Steam Oven

Sharp AX-HC1: Superheated Steam Oven 08/23/2004 08:53 AM

sharp_steam5.jpg imageSharp has a new small oven that uses superheated steam to not only cook and reheat food, but melt excess salt and fat away from meats and other delicious dishes. Sharp quotes up to eight times as much fat removed by cooking a steak in the AX-HC1 ovens than frying in a pan, while reheating tempura and other fried foods removed up to 13% of their oil content.

Sharp will be releasing the oven in the US sometime soonish, although for now the $1,150 is Japan-only. I'm waiting for the oven that uses superheated steam to turn all my food into a nutritionless, guiltless slurry.

Sharp Muramasa PC-CV50F Hands-On

Sharp Muramasa PC-CV50F Hands-On 06/18/2004 09:28 AM

sharp_muramasas.jpg imageSorobanGeeks has a short hands-on with the Sharp Muramasa, the ultra-portable notebook powered by the Transmeta Efficeon TM8600 at 1GHz. As while it runs strong and fast (for its class), they come away most impressed by its screen, describing it as extremely clear, but with pixels so small that it is hard to pick out individual ones -- in this case, that's a good thing. No PCMCIA, but CF and SD for upgrades, when needed. Lots of pictures (and gushing in French, if that's your thing) at Akihabara News.

A former Sharp corporation employee in Japan sues over flat screen technology. According to an article written by The Age, the former employee claims to be responsible for technology that helped improve the efficiency of LCD screen while also reducing their power consumption as well. Even though the Sharp corporation refused to comment, the reality would seem that this is a growing problem that the Japanese government needs to address before this becomes even more common place.
