I've never had much use for cufflinks (especially since my tux and tux-shirt vanished along with three boxes of prized possessions that I mailed from San Francisco to London), but these ones appeal to the autistically instrument-obssessed nerd in me: an entire line of cufflinks with embedded clocks, thermomenters and compasses. It's enough to make me a) want to buy a pair and b) buy a new tux to wear 'em with. Link (Thanks, Yoz!)

12/22/2003 11:20 AM
Gizmodo reported that people in Hong Kong are going around with short-range walkie talkies in order to communicate with nearby chums wihtout paying a toll to the telcos; now a Gizmodo reader confirms it:
Your entry on the HK Walkie Talkie phenomenon is 100% accurate. All the electronics markets are filled with FRS radios and the like. I've even seen people using them to meet up on the MTR (Subway).

He also says that walkie-talkies that you wear on your wrist (like the one pictured at right) are most definitely the ones to be seen with.

Imagine having a van that had 13 cameras and took a picture every 15 feet. The applications are unlimited I would love to have them drive thru my grandfathers property this would give me a visual record of what state the property is in. Do this every few years and you would have one heck of a record. BUt think about using it for homeland security etc. Insurance adjusters like it and homeland defense does to. [Yahoo News]

SPControls Pixie PXE-DCM Wall-Mounted
Remote
06/17/2004 10:06 AM

pxe_home_1.jpg imageI'll be honest, I'm not sure exactly how the Pixie (PXE-DCM) from SPControls works. Best I can tell, it functions as a wall-mounted learning remote control, picking up basic functions from any other remote using the standard 'point and learn' technique of other learning devices. Then, I guess, you can use the Pixie to control the basic functions of your projector or plasma screen or whatever from the wall, instead of, you know, that handy remote. I'm not against this, per se, but it does seem a little weird that they don't explain it in any more detail than they do. So it's an IR light switch? How does it get power? So it's all the benefits of a remote, minus most of the functionality, and stuck in a wall? Please rewrite your ad copy and give me a price so I may pan your product more thoroughly. (Thanks, Travis!)

Wireless Watch 2004: UbiButton Watch
Super Clapper
07/22/2004 08:11 AM

wjdcm19l.jpg imageWIRELESS WATCH 2004 is going on in Japan until Friday, and there are plenty of new product demonstrations as well as those currently in development on display. This year's hot sheet includes NTT DoCoMo's "UbiButton," a device similar in form factor to a wristwatch. By detecting the shock waves in the arm created by a simple snapping of the fingers, a switch is flipped that can, for example, turn a light on and off. In other words, DoCoMo has glorified The Clapper to now be called The Snapper. Actually, I know a couple people that can't snap their fingers...what the hell are they supposed to do? [Uhm, clap? - ed] Other highlights from the convention included a working model of a Bluetooth pen, and DDI Pocket's "Jacketphone," a SD card sized PHS module. TechJapan has full Day 1 coverage, with pretty pictures.

Fossil Wrist PDA (Finally) Reviewed

Fossil Wrist PDA (Finally) Reviewed 02/05/2005 10:17 PM

wristpda.jpg imageFor those of you who don't mind adorning your wrist with what appears to be a small, metal-framed end table comes the Wrist PDA from Fossil. Possibly the first wrist watch to come with a stylus, (albeit one that looks like the nail file from a mini-Leatherman) Fossil has jam-packed every ounce of PalmOS goodness they could into a little square. As a bonus, they've graciously packed it in an adorable orange tin which you can later use to store your Tinker Toys or fingers collection. FossilWristPDA.com has a surprisingly balanced review/getting started guide that gets only a little bit smarmy (and we'll cut them some slack, since they've obviously been anxiously sitting on that domain for a while). It seems that writing on the watch has a bit of a learning curve, but using most third party software works well and allows you to pack quite a bit of functionality onto your wrist. It's only taken like 3 years to get here.

fossil_pda.jpg imageTheRegister has gotten their paws on a Fossil Wrist PDA, the FX2008, and posted their review of it. After having waited "an extra year," the reviewer says it has some serious pitfalls — it's too damn big and has too short a battery life. One is a critical blow to the "watch" aspect, and the other a critical blow to the "PDA" aspect. I'll let you figure out which is which. Fatality.

Press Release: MacNETv2 and Blue Moon
Bids partner to sell rare Apple wrist
watches
03/22/2005 04:52 PM

Salem, OR (Blue Moon Bids) March 21, 2005

MacNETv2 is raising funds to buy two Xserve G5 servers. To do so they are parting with three Apple Logo Watches from the 1995 MacWorld Expo. They are in mint condition, never been worn, and have been in safe keeping since they were acquired. The watches are rare and hard to find.

"Before we made the decision to offer these watches for sale to the highest offers we searched all the Apple logo companies to see what they were getting for them. We couldn’t find a single web site offering these watches, and when we searched eBay we found the same thing; no one has them," said the MacNETv2 staff.
