A Brief Look At Professional Gaming
A Brief Look At Professional Gaming
07/25/2004 04:01 PMThe other day I came across an old friend while doing my weekly
shopping and we decided to go for some ice blendeds to catch up on
things. It went along smoothly until I asked him about his job. At
the mere mention of it, he shifted uneasily and his eyes scanned our
surroundings. Finally, he leaned close and said in a hoarse whisper:
"I play games for a living." It had been a known fact since my high
school days that this particular friend loved playing games and often
his mind were on his games rather than the opposite sex. At one point
he had mentioned that his dream was to become a professional gamer,
and it looked like he had achieved his dream, except for one problem:
"It's not working out," he said dejectedly. "Everything's falling
apart."

Online Gaming As A Professional Sport In
South Korea
12/16/2003 03:09 AMFor a while now we've spoken about how video gaming was
appro
aching a level similar to professional sports, with companies
starting to do sponsorship deals and certain gaming contests showing
up on television, complete with commentators and fans. Well, it
appears that one place where the idea has really taken off is South
Korea where
profe
ssional video gamers can earn more than $100,000 per year. Of
course, the article explains that it's not all fun and (well...) games
for the players. They are forced to live in "barracks" of the
companies that sponsor them and are required to spend 12 hours a day
banging away at their console games practicing for major contests
(which are televised). Then, the pressure to win (especially when
competing against amateurs) is almost unbearable for some. Seems a
bit hard-core, but that's what you'd expect in just about any
competitive situation. If the players can't take the pressure, then
they probably shouldn't have gotten into the competition.

A New Gaming Engine That Can Make Games
More... Real?
A New Gaming Engine That Can Make Games
More... Real?
12/22/2003 02:10 AMThe graphics in computer video games are certainly getting better and
better with each generation. However, they're reaching the "good
enough" point, such that people are beginning to focus more and more
on the actual game play, rather than the game look. When they do
that, they notice that many games are... well, repetitive and
predictable. So, is there a way to make games unpredictable in a
realistic way that doesn't require massively powerful new hardware?
That seems to be the plan of Condition30, a Canadian company that
believes they've been able to
create more realistic gaming
engines that involve giving the engine some basic parameters, and
letting it figure out the rest - in order to ensure that the end
results are a lot less predictable and (hopefully) a lot more
realistic. The article is pretty short on details, and raises the
skepticism alarm in the back of my head. One thing going for the
company, though, is that among the founders is JD "Illiad" Frazer of
User Friendly.

Online Games Of Skill vs. Online Games
Of Chance
Online Games Of Skill vs. Online Games
Of Chance
05/24/2004 04:40 AMWhile the US has been notoriously tough on the idea of any online
gambling in the US, there are a number of companies doing quite well
in the somewhat "gray" area of
online games of skill for money. These aren't games of
chance, but still require players to put up money, and the winners go
home with more than they put in. The difference, of course, is that
the win is based (at least somewhat) on the skills of the players.
However, this can be a very fine line. Most games involve a mix of
skill and luck, and you can make the claim that classic gambling games
like poker and blackjack require some amount of skill as well. Still,
the online "games of skill" providers claim they're just like a
typical sports association, like the US Tennis Association, that sets
up tournaments and awards prizes to the winners - minus their own cut.
Of course, they conveniently skip over the part about where the money
comes from. With these online games, it is still a "pay to enter"
sort of contest. Either way, it's not entirely clear how the legal
issues will play out. Some states already bar such online games of
skill, but many don't. Federal laws are still unclear, and the
companies involved in this space are lobbying heavily to try to make
the point that they should be allowed to continue where online
gambling sites are forbidden.

These couture phones come unlocked and ready to work on almost any

Professional BitTorrent?
Professional BitTorrent?
08/31/2004 04:28 AMA startup, Atzio, is now claiming that they have the
first peer-to-peer internet platform for
television, apparently ignoring something like BitTorrent. Of
course, the technology can basically be described as... BitTorrent
with copy protection (how innovative). Plus, they only allow a select
group of clients to seed material on the network, making it less
likely that people will bother to download the software to make it
possible for all this P2P television distribution. The company's own
website, amusingly,
claims it's having trouble handling all the traffic from the news of
their launch -- which might raise some concerns from a company telling
the entertainment industry they can handle the distribution of large
files in great demand. Still, you have to wonder how effective this
sort of solution is. The whole point of their system is you want more
people getting and redistributing the content, but then they throw in
this copy protection, which is almost laughable considering the system
doesn't work if people aren't copying from you while you're copying
from others. Besides, if you're a content producer, why bother paying
this startup (and I assume they want money) to put your content on
their network, when it's easier to just create a torrent, and get it
out there -- where a lot more people already have BitTorrent clients.

Installation, Equipment Rental
Comcast Offers Home Network
Installation, Equipment Rental
05/05/2004 03:44 PMComcast will install Wi-Fi gear, configure a router, and rent it to
their customers with new program: Comcast Home Networking includes the
delivery and installation of Wi-Fi networking for a setup fee and $5
per month (covering the router and one PC Card). Setup costs $200 for
two computers up to $300 for five computers, the maximum covered by
this deal. A current discount program chops $100 off that price until
June 1. The terms and pricing don't explain the rental fee for the
second through fifth computers' hardware, referring to a "rate card"
that isn't on the Web site. The installation includes configuring and
setting a WEP encryption key for the network, a task which with
certain equipment can cause grown men and women to weep. There's
definitely a place for a service in which the equipment is covered
against defects. The site for the program doesn't note this, but
Comcast's overarching subscriber terms says, During the term of this
Agreement, Comcast will repair and maintain all Comcast Equipment and
you agree that the Comcast Equipment will not be serviced by anyone
other than Comcast employees or agents. Part of the press release
noted that this package, offered as $52.95 per month excluding the
rental fees and install fees, has up to 4 Mbps download speeds and 384
Kbps upload speeds. The basic package is $42.95 per month for 3 Mbps
down and 256Kbps up. These prices require a Comcast cable
subscription; it's $10 extra per month without such a subscription.
(Macintosh users need not apply.) Qwest DSL's comparable service is
$39.99/month for 1.5 Mbps down, 896 Kbps up (with Qwest phone
service). Qwest also offers a wireless option with less support and no
installation but without the rental cost: you just buy an Actiontec
device with 802.11g and DSL modem support built in....

Comcast Celebrates By Turning Off DNS
04/08/2005 12:13 PMIt looks like Adelphia cable broadband customers who are about to get
shifted over to Comcast have plenty of outages to look forward to.
The same evening that it's announced that
Time Warner and Comcast will jointly devour what's left of
Adelphia for about $18 billion, Comcast
had major DNS
issues leaving many of their users offline. Of course, in
explaining the widespread outage, Comcast is using their favorite
phrase:
"scheduled
maintenance." That's the same thing they told me when Comcast
turned off my service nearly every weekday last October. I would call
every morning and be told that it was "scheduled maintenance."
However, when I asked what the schedule was and if I'd have service
the next day, I was told they had no idea. Apparently, it doesn't
become scheduled until it actually cut you off.

Comcast Outages Prevent Comcast From
Commenting On Comcast Outages
04/14/2005 01:21 PMLast week, we noted that Comcast was having widespread outage
problems, which they
chalk
ed up to "scheduled maintenance", even though no one was actually
informed of said schedule ahead of time. It turns out that schedule
is pretty crowded, because all week long, there have been
continued
reports of recurring outages all across the Comcast network.
Comcast, of course, continues to be pretty much silent on the issue,
leaving its increasingly fed up call center staff to deal with
incredibly angry customers who feel they're getting no information at
all. How hard is it to admit that they screwed up and they're working
on fixing the problem? Instead of chalking it up to bogus scheduled
maintenance or pretending there's nothing wrong, admit what the
problem is and give people real updates. People would still be
unhappy, but at least they'd feel like the company wasn't ignoring
them. Of course, maybe they can't do that because Comcast staffers
don't have any internet access either...
