Software That Lasts For Years And Years

Software That Lasts For Years And Years 07/14/2004 06:51 PM
We were just talking about the rise of quick and dirty programs as a way for individuals (not necessarily programmers) to solve specific needs. However, as was mentioned at the time, that would be a different "tier" of software programming, and there would still be a need for programmers to do higher level "big" projects. In the past, we've also discussed the problem of data extinction, where old computer systems and formats die out, leaving content and applications virtually useless on ancient media. This is a big problem for many applications, and Dan Bricklin is now suggesting that people need to start designing "Societal Infrastructure Software" that can last for centuries, not just a few years. The idea is that this type of software shouldn't have to worry about new computers or new formats or new anything... but will be able to just keep on working. In order to build this, though, Bricklin believes it will require embracing open source programming, though not necessarily the way people view open source programming today. It's a fascinating concept, but getting people to think long-term is so difficult these days, that you wonder if such ideas will actually catch on.

The Good News According to Jeremy Wright, I'm mentioned in this Business 2.0 article on Foo Camp. The Bad News I'm not about to pay Business 2.0 $5 to read a single page of a single article. A subscription form keep popping up when I try to read page 2. I'd gladly pay 'em $0.50 or so. Micro-payments anyone? Sigh. It's PayPal not rocket surgery, guys. You'd think that part of the "2.0" in "Business 2.0" would involve understanding how...

Work and Camp

Work and Camp 08/14/2004 10:52 PM

I have been really busy with a client for the past few days, trying to get a good handle around a misbehaving web service benchmark.  Oracle JDBC drivers played a key role by hanging instead of complaining.  My opinion of Axis, an open source web service toolkit,  took a dive as well.  It's a complicated, buggy, and slow tool that makes you want to chuck it aside as soon as you use it.  Unfortunately, it's what most people are using on the Java side these days.

Thankfully, I'll be camping at Tahoe again starting this Sunday.  But before that, I got a ton of work to do Saturday.  Decent weekends are rare for me.  When I was young, I dedicated my weekends to my singles life, dating and clubing.  These days, I am working for either myself or my clients every weekend.

If I am not working on weekends, it's usually because I am recovering from too much work during the weekdays.  My method of recovery is to read or watch two three books or movies in a single sitting.  Of course, this leaves little room for quality family time so I am glad for the occasional camping.

Godzilla vs. Camp

Godzilla vs. Camp 05/11/2004 11:59 AM
Last night, I watched the original, unedited Godzilla from 1954 that's finally being shown for the first time on the big screen in the US. No absurdist dubbing. No Raymond Burr. This subtitled print restores 40 minutes of director Ishiro Honda's vision that was chopped out of the first US release. Of course, some of the melodrama and special effects are still worth a chuckle, but this is not our childhood's Godzilla. Honda's film is a post-Nagasaki cautionary tale. And Godzilla is no joke. ...without billing, it's just a hobby

Ken Camp has a brilliant post this morning that I recommned to all four of my readers!  Thanks for the reinforcement and the insights Ken.  I need that kind of poetic and yet common sense grounding.  here's a sample of Ken's work and wisdom...

Like my friends, I've felt change coming for a while. Felt it like small animals feel an earthquake before humans notice the tremblor. Felt it like deer sense flames racing through the underbrush. Felt it like a field mouse feels the shadow of a diving hawk before the talons clutch tight.

Thanks Rob Scoble. "The trouble, as it were, started on June 13. We were mentioned by Joel Spolsky's blog, in an entry titled "How Microsoft Lost the API War." Steve Toub, our technical editor, sent the link around to everyone in the office. It was on my "to do" list on Monday. But I didn't have that much time to actually go read it before all hell broke loose. I started getting IMs asking me about my camp. Was it sleepaway? Who were the counselors? I had no idea what was going on, so I asked one of these wiseacres and I was pointed to Joel's article. "

Slate translates Kerry to English. A lot of the argument lately is that Kerry doesn't really offer up a concete stand on his viewpoint. This article from William Saletan sums up what he believes Kerry is trying to say based on the speech he gave in New York earlier, and how he really stands in opposition to President Bush. Thoughts?

California Geek Camp?

California Geek Camp? 03/23/2005 05:25 PM

Scoble is organizing a Geek Camp in the Washington area.  Sounds great to me except there is no way I am going to drive from the Bay to Seattle to camp out.  Not without a super-deluxe RV.

I am up for a California Geek Camp though, hopefully somewhere in the northern half of the state where there is hot shower and restroom that won't freak out my wife.  I am addicted to hot shower before campfire and camping pigout plus disgusting restroom paints a grim picture.  But I think it's too late to get large enough camping spots though.

Blogging Camp Wellstone: Day One,
Introduction

Blogging Camp Wellstone: Day One,
Introduction
12/17/2004 06:41 PM
The first sessions hasn't started, but already Camp Wellstone seems very different from the tech conferences that I usually attend. For a start, there is no wireless connection. Whatever I write will be posted after the fact, which suits my style better anyway. Secondly, the demographics are way different. There are a lot more women than men here, and a much wider age spread than one would usually find in technology. I'd say there are more 40 to 60 year-olds than any other cohort, not the early 20's crowd that I anticipated. All the people with grey hair aren't wearing $1,000 suits -- in fact, as far as I can tell none of them are. I'm also hearing some southern accents, something that I very rarely hear at tech conference -- the woman next to me is from Mississippi. Sadly, the vast majority of the conference participants' skin is as pale in hue as mine, as is also usually the case at the tech conferences. The kickoff of the conference was a special guest, Al Franken. Before he got on stage I listened to one of the conference organizers, Jeff Blodgett, executive director of the Wellstone Action Network, and former Wellstone campaign manager, remind him that this is a non-partisan affair, to which Franken respondeds, "OK, I'll just make a lot of jokes." Franken got up and spoke. Here are my incomplete notes: Paul was amazing, he touched people. Paul knew both my parents. In 2002 I came in to Minnesota to campaign for Paul. My mom was sick, the first thing Paul asked was how "How was your mom". When he heard she wasn't doing well, and I didn't know what to do about it, he said, "touch means a lot". Paul was a hugger and toucher. It wasn't the same kind of touch as your governor, where you feel disgusted and humiliated afterwards, it was reaching out. The reason I am doing Air America is to get a foothold on radio. ... If you read my book, one of the most important chapters is the one about how the right lied about the memorial around Paul's death. We need to fight back -- oops, I know this is a non-partisan I'm a uniter not a divider, we need to unite to fight these a**holes. This is a non-partisan event, so if there are any a**holes here, I'm sorry....
