IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives
07/15/2004 08:59 AM

ifd-iv.jpg imageFor embedded computing hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection; that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around $2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives instead.
Read - Flash memory ATA hard drive [TechJapan]

Update: Reader Tom Lee brings up a much cheaper option for hackers on a budget (after the jump.)

Torvalds Drives A Mac!

Torvalds Drives A Mac! 03/14/2005 06:07 PM

Technically, it's only an Apple, since he's running Linux instead of OS X. My first question would be why bother, since 90% of what makes the machine is the OS. His response?

As to the why ... Part of it is simply that I wanted to try something else, and I felt like there were enough people testing the x86 side that it certainly didn't need me. Part of it is that I personally believe there are two main architectures out there: Power and x86-64 are what _I_ think are the two most relevant ones, and I decided that I had to at least check the other side of it out seriously if I really believed that.

Fair enough.

Ximeta NetDisk Office 250GB Review 06/21/2004 07:28 AM

ndiskoffc-news.jpg imageExtremeMHz reviews the Ximeta NetDisk Office, another one of those network storage hard drives, although this one does set itself apart by incorporating a built-in 8-port Ethernet switch (10/100). In addition, the NetDisk allows multiple devices to be chained together via USB 2.0 to create arrays larger than the stock 250GB drive size. They have a couple of complaints, like a slightly whiny fan and some software glitches, but overall find the drive to be pretty impressive, with fast performance and security features like hardware keycodes.

Neowin Review: Maxtor DiamondMax 10
250GB Hard Drive
03/28/2005 12:38 PM
After our very own Tom Graham reviewed some <a href="http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=27461&category=ma in" target="_Blank">portable</a> <a href="http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=27605&category=ma in" target="_Blank">hard</a> <a href="http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=296533" ; target="_Blank">drives</a>, today we'll have a look at a Desktop counterpart by Maxtor. The massive <b>250GB DiamondMax 10</b>. As large hard drives are becoming of an increased importance, we will also cover a small guide so you know what to look for when buying a new hard drive.
<ul>After plugging everything in, the drive was visible to my onboard Promise RAID/SATA Interface controller&#8217;s BIOS. In here, you can setup the &#8220;bootability&#8221; of drives and decide whether you want your hard drives to work in a RAID environment or simply to work alone; I decided to skip the RAID options and work alone. Maxtor offer a setup of tools to help you format the drive; MaxBlast, a piece of hard drive management software for Windows by Maxtor, for Maxtor drives.

The first thing you may notice, or not, is the noise level of the hard drive while in operation &#8211; it is, to say the least, very quiet. I found noise only noticeable whilst doing sustained file transfers between itself and my DiamondMax 9. I felt the drive was probably about twice as quiet as the DiamondMax 9; serious credit to Maxtor&#8217;s &#8220;Quiet Drive&#8221; technology, the Fluid Dynamic Bearings, and the fact that the spindle runs at 7,200 RPM (Western Digital has a line of hard drives running at a noisy 10K RPM).</ul>
Will this massive drive keep up to par with the other drives available? Namely the 10K RPM Western Digital Raptor drives? On to the review...

05/28/2004 10:51 AM
Smith Micro Software Inc.'s QuickLink Mobile lets Mac OS X laptop users access the Internet through data-capable cell phones via USB and Bluetooth. The 2.0 version now supports popular PC Card-based Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) interfaces; adds support for EDGE, a high-speed data service available through some cellular networks; and also automatically seeks out and identifies Wi-Fi "hotspots" -- it'll also let you know if the nearby Wi-Fi service is one to which you subscribe. Prices range from US$29.95 to $49.95 depending on whether you need a cable or just software; upgrades from 1.x cost $14.95.

Brian Jepson reviews the Sony Ericsson EDGE card to the nth degree, including configuration advice and photos: This in-depth, multi-page review at Jiwire (our content partner) tells the results of Brian's real-world testing of EDGE service over AT&T Wireless's network in several cities, provides an explanation of how EDGE works (and why performance might vary), and is fully illustrated with screen captures and photos. Brian also provides the information you need to use the card with Mac OS X and Linux, which aren't directly supported by Sony Ericsson. A small download, a few code changes, recompile, and voila! You've got high-speed cell data on unsupported computers. While $80 a month may seem high for a consumer-level price, for business people who need ubiquitous data access, EDGE is really the fastest best option when it works. By January 2005, Verizon Wireless will have its 1xEvDO in potentially dozens of cities, while AT&T Wireless should have debuted UMTS in four or five towns....
