A model for open source software
development

A model for open source software
development
05/25/2004 11:36 AM
Critics of open source software have argued that, from an economic standpoint, "giving the product away" makes no sense. As a new business model, open source has been the victim of many misconceptions and mischaracterizations: that it's the equivalent of communism, that's it's like a virus, and that it's economically dangerous to society, for example. In such a hostile atmosphere, it's not easy to objectively assess a new paradigm that differs greatly from the status quo. However, though a comparable model may not exist in the IT sector, a parallel working model for open source already exists in at least one other field, biomedical research, and this model has been proven to be of great benefit to society.

Screenshot The Open RObot COntrol Software (Orocos) framework applies software patterns in C++ to achieve real-time execution of software components and provides an infrastructure to quickly integrate them in a real-time operating system such as RTAI or RTLinux, although it can be tested on normal Linux systems. It is designed to appeal to roboticists. See the Orocos project homepage for an automated download script.
Changes:
The documentation has been reordered in two major manuals to improve transparency. The State Machine and Program script languages have been unified, allowing the expression of far more powerful state machines. The framework has been extended to provide aperiodic task implementations. The Control Kernel API has been simplified, and various script commands have been added.

Office 2003 XML Reference Schemas

Microsoft is loosening licensing rules on Office 2003 formats in order to get around new "open standard" restrictions to be adopted by the US state of Massachusetts, according to a state official.

The move puts Microsoft on a better footing to compete against open-source applications and non-proprietary document formats. Governments around the world have begun to reconsider the use of proprietary formats, which usually lock them into using particular applications and may hinder archiving efforts.

Dare Obasanjo: The biggest gripe when Office 2003's XML support was announced was that the schemas for WordprocessingML (aka WordML) and co. were proprietary. This was reported in a number of fora including Slashdot and C|Net news. I wonder how many will carry the announcements that these schemas are available for all to peruse and reuse in a royalty free manner?

Did I link to one of these?  Yup.  OK, so I will link link to the announcement.  Done.

Note: in my blog entry I didn't "gripe" about the schemas for WordML, my question related to PowerPoint11.

Can Microsoft Sue Open Office Users?

Can Microsoft Sue Open Office Users? 09/16/2004 01:02 PM
Microsoft this week said that is looking for ways to work more closely with developers of the Open Office open source project, while at the same time, apparently reserving the right to sue them, according to a legal agreement between Microsoft and Open Office's major sponsor, Sun Microsystems, made public this week. The agreement in question was signed in April of this year as part of Sun and Microsoft's landmark multibillion dollar settlement. It was released as part of Sun's annual U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings this week.

The April agreement says that Microsoft can seek damages from Open Office users or distributors for any copy of Open Office installed after April 1, 2004. However, users of Sun's commercial distribution of Open Office, called StarOffice, are protected from legal liabilities under the agreement, says Russ Castronovo, a spokesperson for Sun. Open Office includes a word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation software based on technology Sun acquired in its 1999 purchase of Germany's Star Division. Sun released the code under an open-source license in 2000.
