The next version of the Pocket PC Phone, known as the XDA II or the MDA II depending on which carrier is offering it, still isn't available here, but it is out in the United Arab Emirates, where it's sold as the "i mate." Pocket PC Dubai has an early review of the phone, which runs on the 2003 version of Pocket PC Phone Phone Edition operating system, has 128MB of RAM, a 400MHz processor, an SDIO expansion slot (so you can add WiFi), a 65,000 color display, Bluetooth, and a built-in digital camera. Is That a Phone In Your Pocket...

Is That a Phone In Your Pocket... 09/07/2004 03:56 PM

pokia.JPGTired of talking on that tiny cellphone handset that makes your ear sweat and only comes to the back of your jawbone when you hold it to your ear? Nick Poole's Pokia is a crazy bit of retro chic that turns old 70's-style phone handsets into cellphone accessories. His latest creation, for sale on Ebay, is a Bluetooth-enabled version.

This is the my first bluetooth prototype. I've had it working for a few weeks now and works really well. The charger is at the end of the wire which turns out to be pretty useful. The answer button as you can see is on the top of the handset and the indicator light is mounted on the back. The only slight flaw is that you need a matchstick to adjust volume. Works with any bluetooth phone. Comes with charger (uk spec so you might need a converter if buying from outside the uk).

I don't know how much sense it makes for cellphones, but something like this would work great as a computer accessory for services like Skype. Nick has a number of other models, like the DJ Convoy (a set of headphones and a CB radio microphone), and the Hotline, a handset that looks like it fell off the phone that Reagan used to dial Gorbachev with.

A few weeks ago rumors circulated about the A8100, a Pocket PC Phone from Asus which has a fold down keypad reminiscent of Sony Ericsson's new P900 smartphone. Now Pocket PC Thoughts is reporting that the A8100 should be out in second quarter of next year and cost about $600, though there is still no word on whether it will be a GSM or a CDMA phone or where it might be sold. Sony HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Review

Sony HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Review 07/12/2004 10:34 AM

hmpa1_review.jpg imageI should warn you: I'm sort of lukewarm on portable video players altogether. I don't commute to work, and when I did, there was enough jostling and train swapping to make anything that required focused attention, like reading books or watching video, a fractured and annoying experience. But still, there is an opportunity for a video player like the HMP-A1 to be useful -- I just don't think this would be the one I would buy.

06/29/2004 08:49 AM

eten_P300B.jpg imageAnd while we're on the phone tip, PDA Buyer's Guide has reviewed the E-TEN P300B, a compact, if not powerful Pocket PC phone that will be sold under the FutureCom Global brand here in the US. It's not a beast, with a 200MHz processor, although an ample amount of RAM, plus SDIO, but considering the P300B can be purchased unlocked -- can only be purchased unlocked, in fact -- it looks like a decent, fairly cheap option for someone who wants a GSM Pocket PC without being locked into a single carrier.

Brighthand review of HP's h4155 wireless
Pocket PC
11/02/2003 03:15 PM
Brighthand review of the new iPAQ h4155 Pocket PC from Hewlett Packard. The h4155 (which has a 400MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, and both Bluetooth and WiFi built-in) has largely been overshadowed by some of the other handhelds that have come out recently, like Palm's Tungsten T3 and Dell's Axim X3i, but if Brighthand's enthusiasm is any indication, this one is not worth overlooking:They said it couldn't be done. That creating a pocketable, multimedia-capable handheld with a magnificent color screen, fast processor and, heaven forbid, two forms of wireless was an impossibility -- a contradiction of terms, so to speak. Well, it seems that no one informed HP of this apparent conundrum. Its new iPAQ h4155 Pocket PC does just that, and it may well be the best looking device on the market to boot.By the way (and we know it's pointlessly confusing), but the h4155 is also known as...
