toshiba_085.jpg imageWhoa, remember that 0.85 inch hard drive from Toshiba that was announced like a year ago? Well it's finally ready to go into production in April. And it was 2GB back then, but now it's up to 4GB. Toshiba plans to put the drives in portable audio players and cell phones. Let's hope they have some nice shock protection in these, because one good fall and oops, there goes your whole contact list.

Apricorn EZ Bus Mini Hard Drive Reviewed

Apricorn EZ Bus Mini Hard Drive Reviewed 08/23/2004 06:30 AM

apricorn_usbev.jpg imageThe good news about the Apricorn EZ Bus Mini 20GB, a USB bus-powered hard drive design for on-the-go backups, is that it works very well (if a little slowly), and even has a pretty nice suite of software if you're using Windows (OSX can see the drive fine, but there's no software). The bad news is that for about the same $200 or so price of the Apricorn EZ Bus, you could get a regular USB 2.0 or FireWire unit that uses standard 3.5-inch hard drives with at least five or six times the capacity. Of course, it would be nearly as portable as the iPod-sized Apricorns, and it would probably require its own mains power, but it would be bigger.

That being said, if you're on the road, and looking for a cheap way to store some of your data, if not all of it, it looks like a pretty decent deal. Everything USB has a little price checker at the bottom of their review, and it looks like the 20GB model can be found for as low as $165; cheap enough that the "why not just buy an iPod?" argument is nullified, thankfully.

Toshiba's Erasable Toner

Toshiba's Erasable Toner 09/03/2004 08:45 AM

erasable_toner.jpg imageToshiba TEC has announced "the industry's first" monochromatic copier/fax/scanner/printer thingamajig that features erasable toner. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the fact that it's erasable (not because I'm a moron, but because the press release doesn't say), but the toner is also blue.

In fact, the toner is so erasable that Toshiba TEC is claiming that the same piece of paper can be reused 5 times. But before Toshiba goes and tries to rescue the environment with blue toner and saving paper, they'll need to help us out with the cost - only the copier (no feeder, scanner, nadda) costs nearly $1,200 USD. Don't expect to see your office copier replaced anytime soon either; most people's asses look awful in blue.

Toshiba's 60-Second Charge Battery

Toshiba's 60-Second Charge Battery 03/29/2005 05:42 PM

toshiba_battt.jpgSo if we can't have longer-lived batteries, Toshiba's new Super Charge cells may be the next best thing. The company claims the new cell charge to 80 percent of its capacity in just 60 seconds and cap top out in just "a few minutes more." Not only that, but after 1000 charge cycles, the lithium-ion cell loses only 1 percent of its charging capacity. Two of these cells and a nearby power outlet and you'll be able to stay mobile indefinitely.

Vodafone and Toshiba's Motion Sensing
Phone
02/01/2005 09:09 PM

tosh603-ov.jpg imageVodafone Japan is getting two new Toshiba handsets, the V603T and V603SH, both of which are clamshells. The V603SH has a motion sensor, allowing users to wave it around to perform basic commands (not unlike using mouse gestures)—neat, but ultimately pointless, I fear. At the very least, it's golden, which should be worth some price premium. Its companion V603T appears to be essentially the same phone minus the motion sensing—in its case, Toshiba is focusing on the ability to pick-up analog television broadcasts (something the V603SH can do, as well).

Both phone will be available in February in a Japan near you.
