How to Deal With North Korea & Q&A:
Should U.S. Launch Direct Talks with N.
Korea?
03/19/2003 10:28 PM
Here are two thoughtful pieces on the North Korean Crisis.

From Foreign Affairs comes How to Deal With North Korea.

From the New York Times comes
Q&A: Should U.S. Launch Direct Talks with North Korea?

Here, by the way, is the fourth footnote from How to Deal With North Korea :

Had the Agreed Framework not been signed in 1994, the North's plutonium-based program would by today have produced enough plutonium for up to 30 nuclear weapons. Critics of the accord should not ignore this fact.

North Korea Said WHAT?!?

North Korea Said WHAT?!? 04/09/2004 11:50 PM
FilteredNewsFilter: The only headline about North Korea in most of the media is that the U.S. Wants North Korea Working Group Talks to Resume Before the End of April. But, if you live in Australia or parts of Asia, you will have heard about N.K.'s rather shrill official statement claiming that the U.S. is "dri ving the military situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of a nuclear war" with "moves to put the strategy of pre-emptive nuclear attack into practice." Fighting words. How come nobody in the 'real media' around here seems to have noticed it yet?
I will withdraw my snark if BOTH stories make the morning papers tomorrow, but I doubt it.

Mystery explosion in North Korea

Mystery explosion in North Korea 09/13/2004 10:31 AM
Xeni Jardin: In North Korea earlier this week: an explosion, a giant crater, and a "peculiar cloud." Both the South Korean government and the US government say they don't believe North Korea conducted a nuclear test.

The event took place on the day of North Korea's most important national holiday. September 9, 1948, is the day on which the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was founded.

President Bush and his top advisers have received intelligence reports in recent days describing a confusing series of actions by North Korea that some experts believe could indicate the country is preparing to conduct its first test explosion of a nuclear weapon, according to senior officials with access to the intelligence.

While the indications were viewed as serious enough to warrant a warning to the White House, American intelligence agencies appear divided about the significance of the new North Korean actions, much as they were about the evidence concerning Iraq's alleged weapons stockpiles.

Some analysts in agencies that were the most cautious about the Iraq findings have cautioned that they do not believe the activity detected in North Korea in the past three weeks is necessarily the harbinger of a test. A senior scientist who assesses nuclear intelligence says the new evidence "is not conclusive," but is potentially worrisome.

Update: News reports are now saying the blast may have been related to a dam-building project, or some similar public work.

Bush policy on North Korea: do nothing

Bush policy on North Korea: do nothing 03/11/2003 01:59 PM
According to the headline of the story I saw in McPaper this morning on the way to work, "U.S. will wait out N. Korea situation No military response to next nuclear step" The Bush policy towards North Korea, one administration official is quoted as saying, is that they have decided they "won't do anything." See the latest posting from Josh Marshall as to why that is a terrible idea. But as importantly, I want to understand: why is our policy towards North Korea so different from our policy towards Iraq? Is it just that Hussein tried to kill Daddy, while North Korea only kidnapped hundreds of Japanese citizens and lets millions of its own die? What is the difference here? As someone living within range of a North Korean nuclear tipped missile, I am seriously wondering....

Report: North Korea bans cellphones

Report: North Korea bans cellphones 06/05/2004 01:00 AM
There are reports today that the government of North Korea has banned mobile phones. Details are sketchy.
The country banned the use of mobile phones in late May, according to reports quoting a North Korean official in the country's capital of Pyongyang. The ban may be due to the deadly train explosion in the country in April, which North Korean officials have said was triggered by a mobile phone. Mobile phones have been used to trigger explosions in other attacks across the world. (...)

By the middle of last year, the country counted 40 base stations and about 1,000 users. North Korea has a total population of about 22.5 million people. In contrast, South Korea counts 35 million wireless subscribers and a 75-percent wireless penetration rate (...)

North Korea May Not Have Mobile Phones,
But They Have A Portal
07/15/2004 05:11 PM
North Korea was recently in the technology news for their decisi on to ban mobile phones from the country. However, it looks like they're trying to figure out this whole internet thing, and are stuck somewhere back in the nineties as they're trying to launch their very own internet portal. It has news, shopping and even free email, though the email part doesn't actually work (remember: must not let people communicate). There doesn't seem to be much internet infrastructure in North Korea, of course, so the site needs to be run out of Germany instead.
