09/24/2004 09:55 AMReader John R. Bennett of Savannah writes:
You may find
this unbelievably uninteresting and more suitable for a dusty corner
of digital photography blog, but I'm curious about it:
This week I watched both "CSI:NY" and "CSI Classic" (Or whatever
they call the Las Vegas jurisdiction). I noticed the New York crime
scenesters appeared to be using Olympus digital cameras, while their
colleagues out West seem to be rocking the Nikons. Not sure what's
going on in Miami. Probably those Panasonic/Leicas.
At any rate, while it's certainly understandable for different law
enforcement agencies in different states to use different vendors for
equipment, did CBS and Jerry Bruckheimer actually strike different
product placement deals for the different CSI franchises? I'm
obsessed.
When "CSI: Topeka" debuts I'm guessing they'll be outfitted with
that oddly named Pentax DSLR.
Anybody have any idea? Which is the camera of the true
crimefighter?
Readers chime in after the jump.

I love Fortean Times's online gallery of strange
photos and illustrations. Along with antique spirit snapshots,
stigmata statues, Bigfoot, and dervishes, they have a nice selection
of "simulacra photos." In Fortean terms, simulacra photos depict
"spontaneous or natural figures or images. These can occur in nature
as well as in the chance conjunction of artefacts." For example, the
seed capsules of snapdragons in this photo. Readers are invited to
send in their own shots to the print magazine's Simulacra Corner.

photographs of children are so spookily sweet that they're
hypnotizing. According to the Bust article (not archived online), Lux
won't reveal her specific Photoshop techniques except to say that "the
images are compositions of photos superimposed over painted
backgrounds, then finished off with digital alterations." Her online
gallery is just stunning. When I have a child, I'd love to commission
Lux to photograph him or her every year.

03/30/2005 02:33 PMDavid Pescovitz:

gallery
created this stunning online exhibit of their Russian Photography
Collection: 1917-1945. This image "
Pojarnaia lestnitsa" (Fire
Escape) was taken in 1925 by my favorite avant-garde photographer,
Constructivist
artist
Aleksandr
Rodchenko. From the exhibit summary:
The collection was assembled as the Soviet Union tore itself apart
leaving a tattered social fabric behind. Organized as a history of
20th century photography of the Soviet Union the collection focuses on
the categories: Constructivism/Avant-Garde, Propaganda,
Photo-Reportage, War Photography, and Socialist Realism which provide
the most effective and complete view of one of the most incredible
experiments in human history.

Digital Photography Hacks Reviewed

We
don't normally talk about book reviews, but since Mark Goldstein's
Photography Blog is one of our favorites (and we must admit a certain
weakness for O'Reilly books) I think we'll make an exception as he
reviews "Digital Photography Hacks" by Derrick Story. The short end?
He likes it a lot, which is fairly high praise from someone who is
already a photography, calling it "well-rounded and not at all
shallow" and "most suitable for the Intermediate category," as well as
"explicit," "concentrate," and "and."
Although I haven't read Story's book, one thing that caught my eye
is that out of 100 different tips, only 13 are about Photoshop. I love
me some Photoshop, but I'm more interested in learning what to do so I
don't need it.

Erotic art photography censored in

Erotic art photography censored in
Norway
04/30/2004 07:17 PMAn anti-obscenity statute sparked an online controversy in Norway
recently, when the Norwegian online erotic magazine
Cupido published some explicit, autobiographical art-porn shots
from Brooklyn-based photographer Siege. The specific issue in question
is not currently online in entirety, but you can see one of the
offending shots
here (upper right-hand corner). Some of the work was also
recently blogged on BoingBoing,
here. Cupido editor Cecilie Kjensli in Norway sent the following
e-mail to the banned-in-Norway photographer:
"You know what. Something stupid has happened. Cupido har been
sensuratet for first time during 20 years because of your pictures :)
I have told you before that we are not aloud to print pictures with
genital touhing. Our law system sais you cant show pictures that can
offend people, so i thougt that no boddy would be offended of this in
an erotic magazine. I understand if they were printed in a newspaper
or a womans magazin, but not ours.
"Our distributor dissagred with me the way they understand the law, so
they put a black spot in the face of the girls sukking you, I belive.
So I told the press. That you are a trendy New York phothografer with
a girlfriend and that you have a good appetite for sex and that you
like taking pictures of you doing it. I read this on Nerve.com I
think. Hope you'r not angry at me for this. I was wear of that
something like this could happen, so when it did, I tipsed one of the
biggest and best tabloid newspaper in Norway, and they made a huge
reportage on it telling people that you actually can take off the
black spot. And it showed the stupid porn-law, as we call it, from a
good perspectiv.
Here is the link to the reportage in the newspaper. I'm the one with
the
dildoes."
