New York's golden age
New York's golden age
01/02/2005 06:28 PMThe NY Times recently asked a few New Yorkers which era they would nominate as New York's golden
age. Like Greg, I thought Bill T. Jones' answer was the
most penetrating:
Right after 9/11.
New York had a true reappraisal
of itself at a tragic and introspective moment. New York had the
attention of the whole world; it was a frightening moment. But the
world was ready to follow, to assist.
It lasted a few months. We
were vulnerable and open to the rest of the world, and we were ready
for a change. There was a chance to ask questions, and it was a time
when we were forced to do so.
But it didn't happen. There wasn't
a true conversation about what America means to the rest of the world
or about why New York was chosen. It was an opportunity. And then the
politicians took it.
That last sentence is a doozy, isn't it? It saddens me to think
that in times when we need to have open and honest communication to
heal wounds and investigate opportunities, we instead let ourselves
get caught up with the marketing of powerful men.

Protests at
RNC test appropriate response
An eyewitness account by
I Can't Believe Its A Democracy - "I just
have to pause here for a moment to make an observation. How many times
have I seen an interview with an arrested protester who claimed he or
she had done nothing to provoke the police. Almost always my reaction
has been, "Yeah, sure." Only now I was seeing this very
situation unfold in front of my eyes. These protesters, while
certainly noisy, had obeyed police instructions down the entire length
of the street. Now they were being treated as if they had gotten
wildly out of control, but they hadn't. I know, because I was
there."
Another account from
Captain Normal (also an eyewitness and even got
arrested and held for 24 hours without being charged or being able to
contact a lawyer) discusses a family of French tourists caught up in
the sweep as well as some of the other residents of
"Gitmo
on the Hudson".

Comment Goal Reached
Comment Goal Reached
09/07/2004 11:52 PMWe very quietly reached another goal this week. Since I started
this site almost three years ago, I've wanted to have as many comments
as I had entries. I don't know why, it just seemed like a good goal
to have.
The first iteration of the site was a custom PHP app that didn't
even have comments, so we got a late start. We flirted with the goal
for the last few weeks, but it doesn't help that we're posting like
chipmunks on crack these days. I'm also really anal-retentive about
the comments — there are no spams, "me toos," or test comments
in the database. All comments are legit.
Anyway, comments passed up entries on Sunday. As I write this, we
have 2,909 entries and 2,938 comments. Next goal: 3,000 entries,
which we'll hit by the end of the month. The ultimate goal has always
been 5,000 entries, and we're on a pace to hit that by the end of next
year.

Compromise
Compromise
02/13/2004 09:23 PM Even though I haven't the fogggiest idea about the backstory to this
vanity license plate, I like to think of this as the quintessential
compromise of a very confused couple....
Why the compromise?
Why the compromise?
01/17/2004 10:45 PMSo—why the compromise position? Taken together, these reasons
added up.
1. Most users don’t care about this issue; they want to read the
news.
The reason NetNewsWire is forgiving with RSS feeds is because other
aggregators that came before NetNewsWire were too. Did I get bug
reports like “I can’t read this feed in NetNewsWire, but I
can read it in x?” Yes.
2. There’s the prisoners dilemma.
Given that only one other aggregator developer was willing to require
well-formed-ness for Atom, I was going to get bug reports for Atom
feeds. “It works in x, but not in NetNewsWire, it must be
NetNewsWire’s bug, right?”
I don’t have time to spend on bug reports for bugs that
aren’t even my bugs.
3. There’s an issue of perceived bias.
The reason I wrote my own weblog software was so that people
wouldn’t suspect that my software is designed to work best with
system x. There’s a similar issue here: I’m on the RSS
Board, and yet I don’t want people to think NetNewsWire is
designed to work against Atom.
There are some ironies here, of course—one of them being that I
believed that my initial choice was the best thing for Atom. (One
person jokingly suggested I be removed from the RSS board for being
too good to Atom.)
In fact, I still believe my initial choice was the best thing for
Atom.
But my job is writing software that people like; my job is not to take
care of Atom.

Motorola May Compromise on UWB
Motorola May Compromise on UWB
02/17/2004 10:30 AMReport says Motorola may over bridge proposal to bring unity to UWB
development: Motorola, which acquired XtremeSpectrum, represents one
camp in the IEEE 802.15.3a task group designed for high-speed,
short-distance connectivity for 110 to 480 Mbps networking. UWB was
decided on as the physical flavor months ago, but the Multi-band OFDM
Alliance (Intel, TI, et. al) and Motorola have two competing and
incompatible proposals. An olive branch could coalesce the
differences, avoiding a standards war....

Compromise on Atom and XML
Compromise on Atom and XML
01/17/2004 10:45 PMTim Bray suggested a setting for how strict a parser should be with a
given feed. Eric Albert suggested a
smiley face (as in iCab) to distinguish well-formed from
non-well-formed feeds.
I’ve gotten lots of email on the topic of Atom and requiring
well-formed XML. I’ve read about this topic pretty much
everywhere it’s popped up. And I conclude, reluctantly, that a
compromise is the best thing.
I encourage
Nick
Bradbury—and any other aggregator developer who was planning
on requiring XML well-formed-ness for Atom feeds—to take a
similar position. Nobody should take a bullet over this.
What I plan to do in NetNewsWire is something like the
following—though details may change, of course.
1. Have global and per-feed settings for requiring well-formed XML.
The default will be no, to not require it. My Atom and RSS parsers
will both work around non-well-formed feeds in the same way.
(They’ll most likely use the same code.)
2. Have an optional indicator of some kind that displays when a feed
isn’t well-formed XML. (Probably
not a little frowny
face, but who knows.) This feature will also be turned off by
default.
3. Make the Validate this Feed command more visible. Right now
it’s available only through a contextual menu; it should be
easier to find and use.
If you’re a NetNewsWire user, and you don’t care about
this issue, it will stay out of your way. You’ll notice an extra
pref and a command in the menu bar, but NetNewsWire won’t be
complaining about non-well-formed feeds all the time.
You’re not expected to care about this issue, by the
way—you want to read the news. That’s totally cool.
And me, I just want to get back to work fixing bugs and adding new
features.

Settlement reached in iPod battery
lawsuit
Settlement reached in iPod battery
lawsuit
06/05/2005 11:20 PMApple is offering consumers who had battery problems with older
versions of the popular iPod digital music player $50 vouchers and
extended service warranties under a tentative settlement in a
class-action lawsuit.
According to AP, lawyers representing consumers in the state court
case said that the settlement could affect as many as 2 million people
nationwide who purchased first-, second- and third-generation iPods
through May 2004. Apple confirmed the settlement but has not
officially commented.
The settlement comes after eight consumers filed a suit in 2003,
alleging that the iPod failed to live up to claims that the
rechargeable battery would last the product's lifetime and play music
continuously for up to 10 hours. According to the terms of the
settlement, people who fill out a claim form are entitled to receive
$50 redeemable toward the purchase of any Apple products or services
except iTunes downloads or iTunes gift certificates.
Consumers will be notified of the tentative settlement in three ways:
by e-mail, by letters, and through advertisements in USA Today and
Parade Magazine in the next month, said Elizabeth C. Pritzker, an
attorney at Burlingame-based law firm Cotchett, Pitre, Simon &
McCarthy LLP, which represented two plaintiffs. Apple has agreed to
pay up to $2.8 million to the two law firms that represented
consumers.
