09/15/2004 07:29 PMMicrosoft have decided to not make available Virtual Server 2005 for
MSDN subscribers. Instead, the company has arranged a special
promotion:
The VS and MSDN teams have collaborated to create a special offer
for Virtual Server 2005 Standard and Enterprise Editions which are
being made available only to MSDN Universal and MSDN Enterprise
subscribers between October 1, 2004 and March 31, 2005. This is a
special promotional offer.
MSDN Universal and Enterprise level subscribers are being granted
special access to Virtual Server 2005 Standard and Enterprise Editions
as downloads from MSDN Subscriber Downloads only. Virtual Server 2005
Standard and Enterprise Editions will not be made available by
fulfillment or in the monthly subscription shipments.
This is the full retail, production version of the product and does
not include the typical MSDN restrictions of running only in dev/test
environments and can be run in production (except on XP Pro).

Canada Rules That ISPs Don't Need To Pay
Royalties For Subscriber Downloads
06/30/2004 11:25 AMWhile some Canadian
politic
ians seem a bit shady when it comes to understanding the
intricacies intellectual property law, it appears Canadian judges are
doing pretty well. First, they
shot
down lawsuits against file sharers by pointing out that the
recording industry didn't actually have any
evidence that files
were uploaded or downloaded (just that they were "available"). Now,
they've ruled that ISPs are
not
responsible for paying royalties when their subscribers download
music. This was part of a money grab strategy by the
entertainment industry who figured that they might as well just go
after ISPs and see if they could get some cash out of them. The
Canadian Supreme Court, in a unanimous ruling, found that ISPs are
just "intermediaries," and should have no obligation to pay for what
their subscribers are doing.

MSDN Code Center and Downloads Updates
MSDN Code Center and Downloads Updates
12/08/2003 12:06 AMIn addition to improving the UI and centralizing the download and code
sample content by topic into the library, this project also helped us
clean-up our back-end content management system for downloads and code
samples by reducing redundant production work, removing an outdated
publishing tool, and rebuilding an infrastructure that previously
didn't scale to our needs.
The new download management system now allows us to store our download
data and bits in a scalable server environment with a distributed
architecture. The new system includes a management and publishing tool
which is used to submit, attribute, and publish the download or sample
in a consistent way, thus providing us with the ability to more easily
localize our downloads, show the most popular downloads, to query by
topic or owner or other attributes, and to ensure that all downloads
are published consistently across the microsoft.com domain—making it
easier for you, our customers, to locate the information you are
looking for.

about open source business models. Kertzman
said 1 that the key factor, from his
perspective, is the way in which the open source stack frees
commercial software companies from the burden of "dragging around an
expensive platform." He also
questioned the need 2 for the JVM, citing two
reasons. First, that Java's portability has become a non-issue now
that there are only two platforms that matter: .NET and Linux. Second,
that the rise of XML Web services has given a boost to the text-savvy
scripting languages: Perl/Python/PHP, the "P" in LAMP.

05/05/2004 05:00 PMMSDN subscribers can now get their hands on the version of Longhorn
that WinHEC attendees got yesterday. Microsoft has posted build 4074
of Longhorn on the MSDN Subscriber Downloads site. Interestingly, the
iso of build 4074 registers at 733.75 MBs, meaning it must be burned
onto a DVD. The iso for 4074 is nearly 100 MBs larger than the iso
distributed at last year's PDC. Anyway, click the headline to get
started! Microsoft has said they are making this available only for
download, and will not ship Longhorn build 4074 with the June updates.

protection improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over 50 ways
spyware can enter your PC.
The worldwide SpyNet™ community plays a key role in determining
which suspicious programs are classified as spyware. Microsoft
researchers quickly develop methods to counteract these threats, which
are automatically downloaded to your PC, so you stay up-to-date.
