Sputnik launches new Linux-based

Sputnik launches new Linux-based
indoor/outdoor AP for only $250!
04/09/2004 09:17 PM
My friends over at Sputnik just launched a new, indoor/outdoor AP, the Sputnik AP 200. Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night shall stay these rugged, high-powered APs from distributing Wi-Fi for a distance of miles, with optional external antenna, of course.

The specs rock:

  • 200 mW transmit antenna
  • environmentally sealed and tested in temperatures ranging from -4° F to 158° F
  • works with a variety of directional and omni-directional antennas (Sputnik sells a bunch)
  • supports Power over Ethernet (PoE), so you can deploy them anywhere
  • uses transmit power control, so you can reduce interference and increase bandwidth
  • plug-n-play provisioning, making it a snap to grow your network
  • WDS repeater range of over 3 miles

Of course, the real magic is in the Sputnik Control Center software (disclaimer, I had something to do with developing it...) that lets you authenticate and track users centrally, and build a managed wireless network from the ground up just by plugging APs into broadband.

Best news of all: this baby is only $250. You can start a hotzone for as little as $595, which is the special price for a Sputnik AP 200, a Sputnik AP 160 and corresponding Sputnik Central Control license.

Great work, guys!

The touchscreen smartphone is oriented around music and video playback, but you'll be able to run a variety of applications on the system, including 3D games. It's exactly the kind of form factor I can't hang with in a smartphone, but it looks pretty decent if you like pen-based interfaces and the tweakability that Linux provides.

Oh, and it can pair up with Motorola's new Bluetooth headphones. Saucy.

Analyst Says: Linux Headed for Worldwide
Smartphone Domination
01/27/2004 01:17 AM
Linux may become the preferred operating system in a full-featured mobile device and handset market in which "there is no economic reason to question why growth will not be explosive," according to Seamus McAteer, senior analyst and managing partner, Zelos Group. "The mass adoption of full-featured handsets will be disruptive," adds McAteer. McAteer is author of a Zelos Group report, Defining the Market for Full-Feature Handsets, which forecasts annual sales of 290 million, or 43 percent of the global handset market, by 2008 for full-featured handsets -- mobile phones that incorporate full-featured operating systems. Based on Zelos Group's analysis, the long-term prospects for Linux as the preferred operating system for connected devices are "very strong." Zelos Group scored all mobile platforms across five criteria: business viability, completeness, cost, end user appeal and openness. Linux scored highest on the two criteria that matter most to OEMs and carriers: openness and low cost. Microsoft scored lowest in these criteria.

Earthlink Launches Standards-Based P2P
Network?
09/16/2004 03:43 AM
While ISPs were perhaps the one entity that benefited the most from file sharing, recently they've been very hostile to the concept -- mostly due to being inundated with take down letters from the entertainment industry. However, Earthlink seems to have figured out that the more people using the internet to do more, the better off they'll be and has released their own "proof-of-concept" SIP-based file sharing network called SIPShare. To back this up, they say: "An open Internet means users have full end-to-end connectivity to say to each other whatever it is they say, be that voice, video, or other data exchanges, without the help of mediating servers in the middle whenever possible. We believe that if peer-to-peer flourishes, the Internet flourishes." Good thing they released this before the INDUCE Act becomes law, or Earthlink might be in trouble.
