Exporting from Orkut
Exporting from Orkut
08/11/2004 11:30 AMDoc asks the same question we all want.....
Subtract
People are asking me to be their contact on Multiply. There was an error
processing your request. Please try again. it tells me, with
advice to "contact customer service." I'm not a customer. I don't have
the time. But I do wonder why we need yet another one of these
things.
Ah, one friend just told me Multiply promised to import
Orkut contacts, somehow. That's a good sell, if it can be
done, I guess. If it has other advantages over Orkut, which has become
too slow for me. In fact, it's busy not coming up right now.
[Doc Searls]
Me too! I wanna export from orkut - too!
But to export - we need to get explicit permission from each and
every person - with them 'opting into' the export process. That will
appear as a simple checkbox in folks' settings.
THEN Doc can use FOAFnet to import his social network into Multiply
- theoretically. All Multipl has to do is support the FOAFnet.org spec!
That's EXACTLY why we created it!

Hack your Xbox, get illegally converged
Hack your Xbox, get illegally converged
12/15/2003 11:36 AMWhy buy an expensive "media center" PC with lots of DRM that restrict
how you can use your own music and movies, when you can hack a cheap
Xbox to do the same thing?
"It's a convenience thing," said Phil, whose hacking hobbies
discourage him from divulging his full name. "All of my movies are
organized into categories, and it's very easy to navigate through the
menus to find exactly what I want to watch. I have a PC in the
basement of my house which stores all of my music and movies, and the
Xbox makes it extremely convenient to use them."

MS Source Code Illegally Leaked
MS Source Code Illegally Leaked
02/13/2004 01:24 PMMicrosoft came out and admitted yesterday that portions of the source code
for Windows NT and Windows 2000 had been made available on the
Internet.
They're not sure just yet who is at fault — source code is
made available to third-party vendors for development purposes, but
those developers are sworn to secrecy, but somebody hosed the program.
MS is not yet sure just how serious the breach is.
In an article
on The Register, John
Lettice comments that...
The impact of the leak is however massively more important
for Microsoft than it is for the rest of the world, as it effectively
blows the company's 'security via obscurity' approach to smithereens.
Over the past year or so it has, with much pomp and ceremony, unveiled
its shared source programme as a counter to open source, while in the
same period it has repeatedly stressed that it cannot disclose some
aspects of its code to rivals for security reasons. If they could see
it, it would leak, and then evil terrorists would be able to break
into Windows more easily. Microsoft, incidentally, currently has the
shared source web site as a 'related link' on the leak statement page. Are you
entirely sure about this relationship,
dahlinks?
