New Scientist
reports on the graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University we've
linked to previously who built a robot that can make simple origami
constructions. The work is aimed at developing robotic systems that
can manipulate various materials encountered in daily life. From
researcher
Devin
Balkcom's site:
"Why origami? Origami is a fresh challenge for the
field of robotic manipulation. Paper is flexible; robots are
best at manipulating rigid things. Even if we model origami as
an articulated rigid body (by building our origami out of really stiff
cardboard with hinges along creases), it still has a complicated
mechanical structure." Link

From CDW comes an origami mini-iPod. A lot lamer than the other

and then got a phone-call telling me they were sold out the iPod at
the price they'd confirmed, but could sell me one for $200 more).

Sinclair's Folding A-Bike
Sinclair's Folding A-Bike
07/08/2004 08:44 AM
Sir Clive
Sinclair, inventor of the pocket calculator and the nigh-on-legendary
Sinclair personal computer, has unveiled a new, folding bicycle design
he's calling the 'A-Bike.' To be launched in 2005, the 12-pound bike
can be folded and unfolded in around 20 seconds and rides on tiny,
air-filled tires. The idea is (if it weren't obvious) to provide a
cheapish alternative to full-sized bikes that can be folded up and
taken with you wherever you go, although the $300 price is
considerable more than it would cost to purchase a capable, if basic,
street bicycle and chain. Still, I am intrigued. Portable urban
transportation is one of my new pet pastimes, and the A-bike would be
much easier to recharge than the electric scooters I've been eyeing
(they sell pizza almost everywhere). (Thanks, Tim!)

Panasonic's Folding Electric Bike
03/23/2005 04:53 AM
Panasonic has introduced a "folding" electric
bicycle. Called the "Off Time," the bike can be folded to fit inside
of a car's trunk, go with you on the train, or stashed under your bed
for when you need to make a quick getaway. Its lithium-ion battery can
drive for about two and a half hours, but I presume that even if it
runs out, you can still pedal it like a normal bike.

Shifting time and folding space
Shifting time and folding space
02/01/2005 08:52 PM
Yesterday I drove to a meeting in another state. On the way there and
back, my car radio was tuned to no regular broadcast but instead to
the pirate radio station in my briefcase. Its components: a $20 Belkin
FM transmitter, a $90 Creative Nomad MuVo MP3 player, and
do-it-yourself programming. As I drove to my destination, I listened
to Shai
Agassi's talk at the Accelerating Change Conference, courtesy of
ITConversations.com. On
the way back, I listened to an audio interview I'd done the day
before, reviewing which parts I might want to use in a podcast or
weave into an article.
When I got home, I dialed in to a conference call, fired up a WebEx
session, and conducted another interview -- in this case, one that
featured a demonstration of a software product. I made an audio/video
recording of that demo, and, as soon as I get a chance to edit it down
to the most interesting parts, I'll share it with you on my blog.
At the end of the day, it struck me that time-shifted content and
space-folding telepresence are becoming complementary.
...
Martin Geddes, who blogs thoughtfully at telepocalypse.net about
telecommunications and IT, recently asked an
important question: "How do telecom and transport substitute [for] or
complement one another?"
Geddes argues that although trillions of dollars ride on the answers,
we mostly don't have a clue. It's a fascinating essay that I won't try
to summarize, but one key point -- the distinction between "travel for
sense of presence" and "travel for information exchange" -- is
relevant here.
As Geddes notes, we're only now approaching the point at which telecom
can sustain credible telepresence. Last weekend, my DSL was upgraded
from 384Kbps to 3Mbps, and I can take it to 7Mbps if necessary. At
what point does the link carry enough emotional bandwidth to begin
displacing travel for sense of presence? I'm not holding my breath.
Apple's iChat AV was cool before, and it'll be cooler now, but it's
not going to replace face-to-face meetings any time soon.
Meanwhile, three megabits per second sure makes travel for information
exchange seem sillier than it already did. Coupled with podcasting, it
makes the two kinds of travel nicely complementary. The podcasting
model is partly based on the assumption that TiVo-izing your audio
content should be a scheduled process. Now that I can download hours
of audio in mere seconds, I just grab what I need on the fly.
Shifting time, folding space, juggling atoms and bits -- is this how
we want to live and work? Yes! [Full story at InfoWorld.com]

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?
A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?
12/18/2003 12:58 PMIt took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be
able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated,
that some researchers are giving up on that idea and
using
Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs.
However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the
upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out
how to make a
robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at
points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking
start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a
slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a
start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the
robot run.

different joints are powered by a single motor, and there is even
software to pre-script the movements on your computer and play them
back again and again. Probably a little out of most casual robotics
fans' price range, but for those that really like contributing to our

A Talking Robot that Sounds Human
A Talking Robot that Sounds Human
04/13/2005 11:17 AMRoland Piquepaille writes,
"The
Takanishi Laboratory, at Waseda University, Japan, is home for many
robotic projects, including a flutist robot. Today,
let's look at a talking robot, the Waseda
Talker No. 4, or WT-4. This anthropomorphic talking robot was built
to better understand how the human vocal mechanism creates speech. The
WT-4 has 19 degrees of freedom (DOF) for lungs, vocal cords, tongue,
lips, teeth, nasal cavity and soft palate. With its vocal cords, it
can
produce Japanese vowels that sound similar to human ones. The next
version, the WT-5, will have even more sophisticated vocal cords."

KiRo: Robot Foosball Player
09/05/2004 11:09 AMRoboticists at the University of Freiburg in Germany have perfected
a robotic foosball table that allows a human to play against the
machine. The intelligent software within the table has two
modes; "reactive mode", in which it simple whacks the ball as hard and
often as possible, and "strategic mode" in which the
software does look-aheads based on the dynamics of the ball. The
software never cheats by spinning and yet is able to score as often as
once every 36 seconds. The university is licensing the technology to a
gaming company, so you may soon be seeing a robot foosball table in a
bar
or club near you. For more information see the KiRo
website or read the research presentation, KiRo
