More Wi-Fi Stereo Options 12/15/2003 02:08 PM

Since we wrote a blurb last week about one product that streams digital music to your stereo, we've gotten a couple of notes from readers or companies that like other solutions: Inupon is one company that makes a device that can stream audio to stereos. Another is called Squeezebox....

defame your stereo

defame your stereo 12/19/2004 03:48 PM

I don't remember how I found them, but I have two new favorite websites: Defamer and Stereogum. They touch my sense of humor in a way that, if Loretta touched Cleveland that way, he'd say, "Oh, Loretta, that tickles me."

There will probably be light blogging for the next week or so. I think the problem with my neck, the cold that I'm barely holding at bay, and about two weeks of really restless sleep are symptoms of trying to do too goddamn much stuff all at once.

JVC UX-QD7 "Lip Lap" Rainbow Stereo

JVC UX-QD7 "Lip Lap" Rainbow Stereo 07/27/2004 01:12 PM

qd7_topimg.jpg imageAlright, I guess this does it: rainbow LEDs are the new blue LEDs. JVC has a new DVD/MD/CD mini-system called the UX-QD7 that not only has 63 color combinations in its LCD display, but also shoots a matching color through the clear plastic disc tray underneath. It's also nicknamed the "Lip Lap," although I don't have the foggiest idea why. While it's not super-likely that the Lip Lap will see the light of day here in the States (especially not with the Minidisc), this isn't the last time (nor the first) we see flashy candy-colored rainbow patterns in our electronics, mark my words.

Hacking your Car Stereo

Hacking your Car Stereo 06/17/2005 06:10 PM

16.jpgiPod enthusiast Matt Gilbert has thrown together a nice, cost-efficient hack to get the iPod running directly to a car stereo without having an auxiliary input. He had experienced static and interference when using FM Transmitters or cassette adapters, and this tweak uses a toggle switch and some wire splicing to create a direct line-in into any car stereo.

The total cost of the mod is under $1 (if you already have basic wiring tools and supplies), and it's a great way to ruin your dashboard if you mess up.

Hack Your Car Stereo 06/17/2005 03:57 PM

“I was tired of using a cassette adapter with my iPod, because it added lots of noise. If I tried to turn the iPod up loud to drown out the noise, the levels would get messed up somehow, and the treble would sound painfully loud. After looking around online for auxiliary input things you can install in your car, I found that they all ranged from $80 to $200, plus installation. While this may be…

iPod and the Car Stereo 01/04/2005 08:49 AM

App le's iPod rocks car-stereo makers: It looks like L awyer Milloy was way ahead of his time.

Looking to capitalize on the digital music player's sales success over the holidays, auto electronics makers are rushing to develop plug-in adapters that let drivers pick tunes from their iPods using the controls of their car stereos.

It's a market that can't be ignored: Some retailers sold out of Apple Computer's iPod during the holiday shopping blitz. Analysts estimated Apple sold more than 4 million iPods during the holiday rush; that could push the number of iPod users to 10 million.

BoomBag: Stereo Luggage 02/01/2005 09:08 PM

boombag.jpg imageBoomBag luggage is designed for the traveling presenter who needs to be able to bust out the Powerpoint at the drop of a business card. Designed to work with projector, the system's speakers fits between the carrying handle, leaving plenty of room to pack your clothing, hairpiece, and vodka. There are two models to choose from, one with a removable tri-fold garment bag, for $275. Not for everybody, but if you could get a tiny projector and a laptop in there (or a Mac mini and Keynote) it's probably a salesman's dream.

This review takes a look at an adapter made by Creative that allows users to stream music from computers to a stereo: The reviewer's biggest complaints surround user interfaces. The remote is apparently clunky and doesn't offer certain features like the ability to make song lists or rewind or fast forward. Also, he says the PC software isn't very user friendly. He also complains about the lag between the time when you choose a song and when it starts playing. I suspect that happens because it takes a few seconds for the box to query the computer and grab the song to start playing it. That ought to speed up in future versions of these products....

By simply attaching an iPod inside the glove compartment, BMW drivers can control their music libraries through the car's audio system and steering wheel. The BMW iPod Adapter can be installed in 2002 or later models, including the Mini Cooper. It supports up to five unique BMW playlists, which simulate the car's CD changer.

Will The Mobile Phone Replace The Car
Stereo?

Will The Mobile Phone Replace The Car
Stereo?
04/21/2004 05:00 PM
For a while now, people have been noticing that mobile phones have been gaining more features found in typical in-dash car navigation systems, to the point that some are wondering if the in-dash navigation system is a thing of the past. Mobitopia is taking that argument one step further and is wondering if mobile phones will replace car stereos as well? It may be a little early to do that, but more phones are coming with mp3 players and FM radios built in - and with a Bluetooth connection they often hook up to the car's stereo speakers wirelessly as well (which might not even be necessary as companies like Spatializer create more advanced audio solutions for mobile phones that can improve the sound quality of mobile phone speakers drastically). As the article points out there are certain advantages to using mobile phones as a replacement for radios - since they can be much more personalized and are portable (so your radio customization follows you from car to car). Of course, it could also make the battle for who controls the car radio when multiple people are in the car more interesting.

Blaupunkpt Woodstock DAB54 Car Stereo

Blaupunkpt Woodstock DAB54 Car Stereo 07/27/2004 09:21 AM

balufkas_dab54.jpg imageDAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radio has its fans and its detractors in the UK, but there's no questioning the creeping tide of music devices that support the standard, like Blaupunkt's newly-updated DAB54 in-dash car stereo. In addition to DAB radio functions like live pausing, record and rewind (rewind live streams to catch the beginning of a song you want to record to SD card), and TravelStore (an automatic catalog of all available DAB stations), the Woodstock also plays regular old CDs and FM radio. The DAB54 also includes Blaupunkt's VarioColour display technology with lets you pick from 4,096 different hues to match the exact color of dashboard illumination.

The biggest disappointment from the Woodstock DAB54? It's not actually wood, which means it won't match my station wagon's dash no matter how many color LEDs it has.

Honda Hybrid Heist How-dunnit -- can you
solve this?
02/16/2004 09:21 PM
Former guestblogger Todd Lappin says:
Newsweek correspondent Brad Stone has written a "how-dunnit?" piece about the recent theft (and recovery) of his 2003 Honda Civic hybrid [affectionately nicknamed "Honky" --XJ]. In theory, thieves shouldn't have been able to steal the car, because it's equipped with a security transponder that's all but uncrackable. Brad writes, "Were we to believe that a thief stole our car to brag to his friends about getting 40-plus miles to the gallon and preserving city air? Odder still, how could they have bypassed the security chip in the thick black jacket of our car key, designed so that our keys, and only our keys, could send the unique code needed to activate the car's ignition? We still had all our keys in our possession."

The mystery remains unsolved, so Brad is soliciting theories from armchair-detectives who think they can explain this high-tech hybrid heist.
