  • Tiger
    • Dev watch: Core Image, Core Video crunch numbers with the GPU instead of the CPU.
    • Safari will have new features, including RSS, Jobs must not know about NetNewsWire.
    • MPEG h264 (not a shocker)
    • System Prefs now use Spotlight instead of top menu bar.
    • One of the best: better searching. Spotlight is iTunes like searching for the whole computer. Full indexes, even for PDFs. System wide, search from anywhere.
    • Over 150 new features
    • Fully 64-bit
  • Tiger will ship in first half of 2005
  • New 20" display in same design, $1,299.
  • New 30" display, biggest ever. 2560 x 1600. Same design as the other new displays today. FireWire and USB, 4 megapixels. Needs PowerMac, 2 DVI connections to run (card costs $600). $3,299.
  • New 23" display, all aluminum, like the ThinkSecret mock ups. ADC is gone from the displays.
  • The online Apple Store just went down--we have new stuff coming.
  • 3,500 developers at WWDC, 17% more than last year

WWDC 2004

WWDC 2004 06/28/2004 02:59 PM

Steve Jobs just wrapped up his keynote at this year's World Wide Developer Conference and aside from the 30-inch Cinema HD Display the primary focus of his talk was Tiger, the next generation of OS X due in 2005. Some highlights of Tiger include:

  • Spotlight - A new search utility to help you find files, apps, contacts, etc.. with greater ease. At first glance it looks a lot like Quicksilver, a tool I absolutely love.
  • Safari RSS - Safari will now be able to read rss feeds and display them within the browser. Now collecting your favorite rss feeds will be as simple as bookmarking a page.
  • Dashboard - A new tool for displaying and using handy 'widgets'. Seems a lot like Konfabulator, another cool tool I use religiously.
  • Automator - A new visual scripting tool that appears useful for creating workflows among Apple's core apps and the iLife suite. Looks like Actions in Photoshop to me.
  • iChat AV - Adds support for up to four people video chatting and up to 10 people in an audio conference. The screenshots are pretty cool.

Apparently, the Moscone Center was decorated in posters taking jabs at Microsoft with phrases such as "Redmond, we have a problem." and "This should keep Redmond busy". Wish I coulda been there.

I'm kind of disappointed that there weren't any iMac announcements, but as we've seen in the last month, Apple doesn't feel the need to save their major product announcements for their highly publicized events. Just check their site every Tuesday and you might see something new.
