Ted explains how to plug JRocket into an existing JDK 1.4.1 JRE:
Ted Neward:
First, I created a subdirectory in my standard JDK 1.4.1 install
structure, j2sdk1.4.1/jre/bin/jrockit. Into this directory I copied
the jvm.dll and Xusage.txt files that came from JRockit itself. Then,
after adding a line "-jrockit KNOWN" into my JDK 1.4.1's jvm.cfg file
(so that the launcher would recognize "-jrockit" as a viable
command-line option), I fired up the standard Sun JDK java launcher
with the command line "java -jrockit Hello". Sure enough, it worked.

Jim Macdonald explains writing
Jim Macdonald explains writing
02/19/2004 12:06 AMJim Macdonald, half of the Doyle-Macdonald writing team, has been
presiding over a hundreds-posts-long running tutorial on how to write
that is unbelievably good and sensible and right. If you want to
write, go read this now.
Well, now, what to put in the opening?
We're going to stick with the chess game metaphor for a while here. In
the opening you're trying to put yourself into a strong position for
going into the midgame (where the exciting action and the exciting
combinations occur), and you do this mostly by getting your pieces off
the back rank as quickly as possible. The pieces are your major
characters. Get them out there, and get them doing things.
Don't neglect your pawns -- your minor characters. You should cherish
your minor characters. They'll save your life. If you have a selection
of minor characters you can pull them out to solve problems later in
the book.
Now, what to put in that first chapter? (Recall that if your readers
don't finish the first chapter they'll never get to chapter two.)
To answer the question of what goes into chapter one, I'm going to
grab the first stanzas from a bunch of Anglo-Scots folk ballads. These
were the popular songs of earlier times, cooked by the folk process so
that only the important and memorable parts remain, they're
entertaining, and they tell stories.

« "Tex" in a 10-gallon hat and cravat listens to the Peruvians
performing in Three Smiths Square. I had to resist the urge to laugh
since it seemed as incongruous as wearing a Lappish hat in downtown
Dallas. »
The Morning News has an absolutely brilliant article this week, The Non-Expert: Accents, [alternate 125kb pdf] where advice is given on how to cultivate
a fake accent when travelling abroad where 90% of the world hates
Americans. Some of the descriptions are spot-on and hilarious,
especially the Maine accent.
A bit of handy advice for those wishing to be cultural chameleons
when leaving the land of 50 states is YOU DON'T NEED TO SHOUT. Four
out of five cruise ship passengers visiting Helsinki this year were
Americans and after a peaceful winter of not hearing any English out
on the sidewalks I suddenly started hearing people like they were
speaking through a megaphone. I mean, I never noticed that people
talked so loudly when living in the US, but damn, I can hear Americans
at least 3 blocks away and chart an evasive course. One of these days
I'm even going to muster the cheek to yell "A LANGUAGE BARRIER IS NOT
A HEARING IMPAIRMENT" when some Americans lean into me and ask me very
loudly if I speak English. It's great sport messing with some of these
people by using my Finnglish, especially when I can tell by their
accent that they're from somewhere near where I grew up. :) Cheap
entertainment.
I do go out of my way at times to make myself sound like I am
anything but an American and it works reasonably well. It is very
curious how much confusion an unusual accent will cause in people who
are desperately trying to place you by your accent since you can see
the wheels turning as they talk to you wondering where you could have
gotten such a funky way of speaking. I thought I'd add a new accent to
the list from the Morning News - Finnglish. :)
Accent: Finnglish
Scenario: You find yourself in Helsinki and realise that the
Finnish phrasebook you bought on Amazon doesn't seem to work at all as
the shopkeepers just give you this blank stare or say "Mitä?" You want
to get some reindeer kitsch for the family back home but don't have
any idea what in the hell these people are saying to you.
Tips & Tricks: First and foremost rule is; don't smile. It's
a dead giveaway that you're an American tourist if you smile. Lower
the volume of your voice as this puts you at a tactical disadvantage
when you can be heard several blocks away. Speak English very slowly
with a slight pause between words as though you are considering every
word while you stress the first syllable of each word. Be sure to
lower the tone of your voice an octave and cultivate a monotone speech
pattern. Think of Star Trek's Chekov's "Nuclear Wessles" except do
not try to sound Russian. If they give you an odd look, just say
how much you love to practice your English around all the American
tourists. Drop out any and all of the idioms that you normally fill a
conversation with and replace it with something bare and slightly
awkward; i.e. Boy,
that gulleywasher last night was a real humdinger of a turdfloater!"
becomes "The storm, he was not usual last night." [100kb mp3]
Confuse he and she randomly in sentences and choose prepositions that
are incorrect for the phrase. Don't 'turn on' your TV, 'open' your TV.
If you get asked something on the sidewalk, a simple nod and "joo" or
"ei" usually suffices. Costume is a consideration, too, as one should
not wear cowboy hats, t-shirts with "BUSH! 4 more years"
emblazoned on them, anything with the stars and stripes or any other
such giveaways.
Response: Skip the tourist market and go to Iittala. Buy a
bunch of Moomin mugs and Teema dinnerware and have them mailed home.
You've already been busted so just say as little as possible, pay, and
leave. :) There's a reason why Mainers and Finns seem a lot alike.

The company where I work -- Tucows -- has launched a "Mobile
Phone
Content Library". Simply put, it's a place where you can download
ringtones, wallpapers and games for your mobile phone.
Here's the text of the official press release:
TORONTO, CANADA, 15 December, 2004 -- Tucows Inc.
(OTCBB:TCOW), today announced the launch of a new content
library for mobile phones at
www.mobile.tucows.com.
The company is working with
Mediaplazza, part of the
Jet Multimedia Group.
Mediaplazza provides a leading platform with mobile content, such as
ring tones, cell phone games and wallpaper.
"We are very excited about the launch of our second new library
this year," said Elliot Noss,
President and CEO Tucows Inc. "Our download customers rely on
Tucows to be their best source of specialty and leading edge tools
for
their computing and personal devices and this library will service
the
exploding market for mobile content."
"Tucows is a great client to have. They have a unique relationship
with
Internet Service Providers around the world. This new
agreement
will increase the availability of our tools to cell phone users
worldwide," commented Marc-Antoine Ross, Country Manager of
MediaPlazza North America.
Tucows chose to work with Mediaplazza because they have
developed
partnerships with large companies and their platform is connected
to
more than 122 telecom operators.
"We are pleased to have Mediaplazza's mobile phone tools
distributed
via the Tucows website. They have a powerful international web
presence
and we at MediaPlazza like to consider ourselves citizens of the
world," said Eric Gautier, Owner of MediaPlazza, part of the Jet
Multimedia Group.

the Attainment of Community Status
05/13/2004 05:19 AMStatus Inertia: The Speed Imperative in the Attainment of
Community Status by Daniel Stewarthttp://opensource
.mit.edu/papers/stewart2.pdfAbstract:This paper examines the role of
tenure in establishing social status within an online community of
free software developers. As tenure increases, an actor's status
becomes increasingly taken-for-granted, thus making it difficult for
actors to generate mobility outside of their current social strata.
The results of empirical analyses suggest that the broader community
plays a major role in deciding one's social position-a judgment that
can be made fairly quickly and decisively. Therefore, members of the
community who desire high status should work quickly to establish a
positive reputation or else run the risk of being cast into an inert
low status social position.

Rochester, N.Y., considers
downtown Wi-Fi: A business development group is studying
whether offering Wi-Fi (free, fee, sponsored, or other models) would
be beneficial to the city's downtown. (When I worked for Kodak, not
out of Rochester, the rumor was that George Eastman had chosen the
town because it was so often gray, thus making it easier to produce
film. Just another jealous tale told by Buffalo residents, I'm sure.)
Piedmont Triad in the Winston-Salem, N.C., area
unwires: Opti-Fi turns on Wi-Fi service at the local
airport on Tuesday. The cost is $2.99 for 15 minutes and 25 cents
thereafter or $7.95 per day. Opti-Fi is partnered with other companies
for resale, however, including their recent T-Mobile HotSpot deal.
Downtown Winston-Salem has had free Wi-Fi since March 2003.
Rumor Mill: EvDO in NYC?
Rumor Mill: EvDO in NYC?
08/27/2004 01:30 PMRumors are flying that Verizon is in the midst of building out EvDO in
New York City: NYC will serve as a crucial example of how the
higher-speed mobile data networks compete next to Wi-Fi. Both networks
have upsides in the city. Wi-Fi is higher speed, lower cost, and
available in many places. EvDO will be lower speed, higher cost, but
available in more places (although cellular coverage is notoriously
bad in the city). At the end of the day, there's a niche for both
networks and if the price is right, enough customers for both....

MSNBC Writer Praises EVDO
MSNBC Writer Praises EVDO
12/19/2004 03:18 PM Gary Krakow loves EVDO: Verizon Wireless's 1xEv-DO cellular data
service isn't available everywhere yet, but Krakow loves even the
current level of ubiquity and speed. A number of my colleagues think
that even a few hundred kilobits per second of download will be
adequate for most users, rendering Wi-Fi connected to a T1 line or
even faster ADSL service--like 6 Mbps down and 768 Kbps--a bit of
overkill. I tend to think these colleagues don't fully appreciate how
many business travelers there are in the U.S.--40 million of them by
one count, 30 million of which carry laptops--and how many of those
travelers have high-bandwidth applications that they struggle to use.
Customer-relation management (CRM) software, Java or ActiveX based
internal applications, or even simple file exchange requires a fair
amount of bandwidth to offer the "it's like I'm in the office"
experience. Even uploading a 10 MB PowerPoint presentation is torture
at the 50 to 100 Kbps per speed that's the maximum that EVDO can offer
right now. Downloads might break 2 Mbps at peak performance, more
likely averaging a very respectable few hundred Kbps, but uploads
aren't emphasized in the current generation of technology. Tell that
to the folks trying to send high-resolution pictures and movies from
fancy new camera phones, too! Krakow doesn't overstate the advantages
of EVDO, however. He's pretty realistic. And for general email and Web
browsing, EVDO is more than adequate. Remember that the 1x in 1xEv-DO
stands for 1.25 MHz of spectrum. A 3x flavor of CDMA2000 will use 3.75
MHz and be able to offer much more speed in both directions. One
flavor in the lab would bring peak upload to 1 Mbps, for instance....

This is why EVDO cellular internet is cool: the guys from
EVDOInfo.com rigged together a little application using off the shelf
parts to display on a web page their car, its exact location and
velocity, as well as the current view out their window. It's tricks
like these that will make EVDO (and UMTS, if Cingular ever gets it
deployed) a standard feature for "carputers" before long.
And to think, just a few short years ago these technologies were
reserved for child molesters and enemies of the state.

Verizon's Edge, I Mean, EvDO on the

Verizon's Edge, I Mean, EvDO on the
Competition
10/28/2003 11:09 PMCell carriers are pretty far behind on 3G, but Verizon's early
deployment may give it an edge -- I mean, a competitive advantage:
While GSM operators struggle with GPRS (10 to 50 Kbps) and are rapidly
trying to get EDGE fully deployed (100 Kbps), Sprint is staying the
course with 1xRTT (50 to 70 Kbps), and T-Mobile and Nextel don't seem
to be in the running for anything more interesting. Verizon Wireless's
early 3G deployment (1xEvDO, 300 to 500 Kbps) in San Diego and
Washington, D.C., may pay off, Matt Maier of Business 2.0 notes,
because they simply have this service now at a fixed rate. The advent
of cell phone number portability about to be engaged ties in with
this: Verizon is the only cell company to back it. They want people to
switch over, sign up for data, and then lock them in with long-term
contracts and the only real 3G that will have any scope in 2004. Great
plan! (All speeds more or less real world, not the advertised
ones.)...
4400 Square Miles of EVDO
4400 Square Miles of EVDO
12/19/2004 03:18 PM Verizon Wireless says they've blanketed Los Angeles and environs: Its
BroadbandAccess service, its name for the package of 1xEv-DO they've
rolled out (or just plain EVDO if you want to be simpler about it)
fills Los Angeles County, parts of Riverside County and San Bernadino
County, and most of San Diego and Orange County. Overall, about 4400
square miles of coverage across populated SoCal. This announcement is
interesting because it was never entirely clear how much of a
metropolitan area that Verizon intended to install EVDO
throughout--100 percent? 95 percent? The city but not the suburbs?
Their work here is a clear signal that they're talking metro
deployment, not urban deployment....

The network, which will use third-generation or "3G"

It's status time again. Quick summary: last week I spent most of my
time on Roller 1.2 related issues and the Apache move. This week, I'll
get back to the Roller 2.0/group blogging work.
On the Roller 1.2 front, I made some small enhancements to the Planet
Roller aggregator and did some work to make the blogs.sun.com front
pages a little easier to maintain. I also did a number of deployments
last week to our internal blog server for testing.
Unfortunately, changing the front-pages in a Roller site is not quite
as easy as changing a blog's theme. The front-pages are JSP, so you
can't edit them through the Roller UI and folks who don't know Java
and JSP have a hard time making changes. A number of people have
suggested the idea of having a blog serve as the front pages of Roller
and I think that's a great idea.
Now let's turn to Apache. Our Subversion repository space is ready at
the Apache Incubator, but we're not. Since the Roller 1.2 release is
coming up soon, last week we decided to keep main-line Roller
development in CVS. Once the release is ready, we'll move to
Subversion and branch 1.2 from there. Also: our new mailing lists are
ready at Apache, but we haven't made the move yet.
Roller 2.0 work got short shrift last week, due to Roller 1.2 and
related issues. Since Roller 2.0 lives in its own branch and Apache
won't allow us to bring branches and history along with us (for a
number of reasons, some legal), I had to do some extra work to
recreate the Roller 2.0 branch in Subversion. I managed to complete
that work and resume work on group blogging. I'm hoping that I can
spend the rest of this week on group blogging.
That's all folks. I'm going to cover RSS and Atom in Action
status in a separate post.
UPDATE: I completely forgot that we released Roller
1.1.2 last week, a minor bug fix release.

or hit enter. Updated some minor back end script handlers, and it's
now built in FacesSpan 4.0, instead of AppleScript Studio.
