  • Tiger
    • Dev watch: Core Image, Core Video crunch numbers with the GPU instead of the CPU.
    • Safari will have new features, including RSS, Jobs must not know about NetNewsWire.
    • MPEG h264 (not a shocker)
    • System Prefs now use Spotlight instead of top menu bar.
    • One of the best: better searching. Spotlight is iTunes like searching for the whole computer. Full indexes, even for PDFs. System wide, search from anywhere.
    • Over 150 new features
    • Fully 64-bit
  • Tiger will ship in first half of 2005
  • New 20" display in same design, $1,299.
  • New 30" display, biggest ever. 2560 x 1600. Same design as the other new displays today. FireWire and USB, 4 megapixels. Needs PowerMac, 2 DVI connections to run (card costs $600). $3,299.
  • New 23" display, all aluminum, like the ThinkSecret mock ups. ADC is gone from the displays.
  • The online Apple Store just went down--we have new stuff coming.
  • 3,500 developers at WWDC, 17% more than last year

WWDC 2004

WWDC 2004 06/28/2004 02:59 PM

Steve Jobs just wrapped up his keynote at this year's World Wide Developer Conference and aside from the 30-inch Cinema HD Display the primary focus of his talk was Tiger, the next generation of OS X due in 2005. Some highlights of Tiger include:

  • Spotlight - A new search utility to help you find files, apps, contacts, etc.. with greater ease. At first glance it looks a lot like Quicksilver, a tool I absolutely love.
  • Safari RSS - Safari will now be able to read rss feeds and display them within the browser. Now collecting your favorite rss feeds will be as simple as bookmarking a page.
  • Dashboard - A new tool for displaying and using handy 'widgets'. Seems a lot like Konfabulator, another cool tool I use religiously.
  • Automator - A new visual scripting tool that appears useful for creating workflows among Apple's core apps and the iLife suite. Looks like Actions in Photoshop to me.
  • iChat AV - Adds support for up to four people video chatting and up to 10 people in an audio conference. The screenshots are pretty cool.

Apparently, the Moscone Center was decorated in posters taking jabs at Microsoft with phrases such as "Redmond, we have a problem." and "This should keep Redmond busy". Wish I coulda been there.

I'm kind of disappointed that there weren't any iMac announcements, but as we've seen in the last month, Apple doesn't feel the need to save their major product announcements for their highly publicized events. Just check their site every Tuesday and you might see something new.

Super Science Fair Projects: Complete Guide to Science Fair Projects, Topics and Experiments
http://www.super-sc ience-fair-projects.com/

Today your teacher announced that your school is going to have a science fair and students are responsible for exhibiting their projects. What do you feel? Enthusiastic? Despondent? Dreadful? Fearful? Excited?" This statement opens the Super Science Fair Projects site. Actually, whether student or parent, science fair projects, while great ways to get students actively involved in learning the scientific method and problem solving, can be tough assignments. This site may help you with one of the hardest parts: coming up with an idea. The site does a great job of walking the visitor through the steps needed to plan and implement a project, from Choosing a Topic, the Scientific Method, and writing the Project Report. There are even tips on displaying your project, rehearsing, winning over judges, and what to expect the day of the fair. This is definitely a great tool to tap into when planning a science fair project.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

In an attempt to build up my skills in the Piper Arrow, an example of the "complex" airplane that must be used for an FAA flight instructor flight test, I went out to western Massachusetts on Saturday to MassMOCA, an electronic components factory converted to contemporary art museum.  The most arresting exhibit currently is by the explosion artist Cai Guo-Qiang.  He tricked out Ford Tauruses with fiber optics to simulate rockets and fireworks then hung them from the ceiling in one of MassMOCA's largest rooms.  This is well worth the trip to the North Adams airport (KAQW; surrounded by mountains and not suitable for IFR or night operations).  If you were bored by the car exhibit at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts you'll like this one.

 Us.Yimg.Com P Ap
20050323 Capt.Px20503231908.Art Of Quackery Px205 These range from an early seventeenth-century Dutch engraving, Operation for Stones in the Head, a sleight-of-hand cure for insanity, to Medical Confessions of Medical Murder, a twelve-scene print in which James Morison, a clever marketer of pills, uses quotations from prominent physicians taken out of context to impugn their practices. Occult book exhibit

Occult book exhibit 06/02/2004 12:10 PM
xoccmoon Here's a stunning collection of rare occult books from the Monash University Library in Australia. From the 1998 exhibition ca talog:
"So great is the variety of 'occultisms,' that it is often difficult to find any connecting link between these traditions. The word is derived from the Latin, occullere, to cover over, to hide, or conceal, and all occult belief systems lay claim to some esoteric or hidden knowledge, but so too do many religions and mystical and philosophical systems, which are not defined as 'occult'. It is also clear - at least as far as those 'occult systems' with their own complex cosmologies are concerned - that what might be perceived by an outsider as "occultism", is to the practitioner quite possibly religion. This difference of perception serves to underline the only definite link that can clearly be demonstrated between these disparate 'occultisms': all were (or are) belief systems which existed (or exist) either on the margins of, or altogether outside, the mainstream religious or philosophical orthodoxies of the cultures in which they evolved." What to do in LA: see NANO exhibit at
LACMA
12/26/2003 07:57 PM
Recently opened at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art: "nano," a cool art/science exhibit for geeks of all ages:
nano [is] an exhibition that merges the arts and the atom by presenting the world of nanoscience through a participatory aesthetic experience. The exhibition, a collaboration between LACMALab and a UCLA team of nanoscience, media arts, and humanities experts, is free to the public and runs through September 6, 2004 in LACMA's Boone Children's Gallery.

This groundbreaking project provides a greater understanding of how art, science, culture, and technology influence each other. The exhibition addresses sophisticated subject matter that is especially relevant for the next generation. Modular, experiential spaces using embedded computing technologies engage all of the senses to provoke a broader understanding of nanoscience and its cultural ramifications. The various components of nano are designed to immerse the visitor in the radical shifts of scale and sensory modes that characterize nanoscience, which works on the scale of a billionth of a meter. Participants can feel what it is like to manipulate atoms one by one and experience nano-scale structures by engaging in art-making activities.
