Netflix Queue Limit

Netflix Queue Limit 01/03/2005 05:58 AM
Ah, joy. Netflix has queue size limit of 500 DVDs. We have 496 movies in queue to be watched now. We'll be through that in about 4 years at the current pace. That's of course if we stop adding new movies and we've been adding faster than we've been watching. At least they've mostly gotten back to their 1-2 day delivery time over the last month. p.s. happy new year everyone....

As the DVD wave crested, it brought along Netflix, one of the first companies to challenge brick-and-mortar video rental stores with a unique business model: rent as many DVDs as you want for a flat monthly rate. However, while the Netflix Web site offers a robust set of features, such as the ability to assign ratings to movies and rearrange your rental queue, they're often cumbersome to use.

I'm a sucker, I guess. Though my previous experiment to not watch TV for 30 days didn't entirely work, I've been TV free for a couple months now--ever since I moved into the new place. I even sold my Tivo to someone at work. As a result I've had more spare time but have occasionally been looking for some entertainment. No problem. I have a small collection of DVDs to watch. But now I've seen them all and am at...

Netflix RSS feeds?

Netflix RSS feeds? 05/31/2004 10:12 AM

Watching movies in the age of the Internet is way different. Now I can look something up after watching a movie, like for example, did you know how many future stars were in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? It's pretty amazing. Scatman Crothers, Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd.

A picture named jack.jpgLast night I went to see Troy with a friend, a perfectly awf ul movie. So much for the theory that I like everything. This one just goes on and on. At one point the camera focuses on an old man who at first looks like he might be Peter O'Toole. Oh good, we'll have some real acting now, I said to myself. But on closer examination, it's just a sad old man, not O'Toole. And the acting continues to be absolutely terrible. The best moments are when Brad Pitt preens, looking beautiful. And that's pretty bad. Anyway on getting home I looked up some reviews, and hold on, that was Peter O'Toole. Holy hanna. He's aged so poorly, and has become a really shitty actor (or is it really shitty direction). Either way, a shame.

It seems that Netflix would be just the kind of network service to give me an RSS feed I can subscribe to, where they would give me interesting articles about movies I just saw, or ones I'm about to see, or movies playing near my house that I would probably like, movies my friends liked, etc etc. They already do a bunch of stuff like that on their site, so why not do it in a feed?

Also, did I write this just so I could include a picture of a youngish Jack Nicholson? I'm not telling.

Netflix on the Skids

Netflix on the Skids 03/19/2005 03:23 AM
I just heard a Netflix ad on the Radio that trumpets its ability to ship your selections in one day.  That is true.  It does take one day.  The problem is that the rest of the service has been substantially degraded.  Here's how:
  • It now takes two days for returns to arrive at the Netflix processing center (it used to take one).
  • It takes a day to process your selection at the facility after it recieves the return (it used to be same-day).
  • Saturday processing and shipments have been terminated (they used to provide this).
  • Lost, damaged, or wrong reports take a day to process (it used to send you a replacement or your next selection on the same day you report).
  • Popular movies are almost impossible to get in the first month of their release.  Cult movies are impossible to get.

If I was an investor in Netflix, I would take these actions as a sell signal.  I can't recommend the service to my friends and family anymore.

Netflix + TiVo: Done

Netflix + TiVo: Done 09/07/2004 03:08 AM
Back in January, we had discussed that coming convergence of TV and movies in the video-on-demand space and discussed the somewhat obvious connection of TiVo + Netflix. It appears that the management of both of those companies has figured it out as well, as Newsweek has the "high level sources" rumor mill spinning about TiVo and Netflix teaming up to offer a combined movies-on-demand service. While the details aren't there, this does make a lot of sense for both companies, who each need to differentiate themselves from the growing competition within their space. Both have built up great brand names, and extraordinarily loyal followings, but are now facing strong competition from more established players with huge wallets. A combined solution that let users download movies directly to their TiVo (and, even better, take them "on the go" with TiVoToGo) has tremendous potential and would keep them a step ahead of the competition for now. Still, it remains to be seen exactly how they implement this solution. If it's not done well, it could be damaging to the reputation of both companies, while taking attention away from their existing solutions. It's also unclear if there will be exclusivity in this relationship, or if both players will be able to team up with others as well.

Green Netflix Envelopes?

Green Netflix Envelopes? 12/19/2004 03:43 PM
What's with the green Netflix envelopes? Hacking Netflix thinks it's because of the Shrek 2 promotion, but it's not just Shrek Green, it's Bright Neon Green. In related news, they have been hideously slow receiving and shipping movies in their Santa Ana distribution center lately. Movies are taking 2-3 days to be received there and ~2 days to get here where it used to be 1-2 days for them to receive it and 1 day for us to get it....
