PKS is an OpenPGP Public Key Server. It allows users to store and lookup public keys from the server's database. It can also synchronize with other servers. This release is intended to be a solid, stable bugfix and feature upgrade to 0.9.5. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I'd like to announce that PKS 0.9.6 has been released! The file can be downloaded from the SourceForge Download Area for the "pks" project. (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=61738) 19427b543972c23fbc1c167d5408d3a9 *pks-0.9.6.tar.gz I just uploaded the tarball to SourceForge, so don't be surprised if it isn't available on SF mirrors yet. See the release notes (NEWS file) and ChangeLog for more information on the changes since 0.9.5. BE SURE TO READ THE UPGRADING FILE! IMPORTANT NOTES FOR INSTALLATION: * READ THE UPGRADING FILE! The database format has changed slightly, and backwards compatibility is NOT the default. * If you want to be able to add keys via HTTP, make sure to uncomment this line in your pksd.conf: www_readonly 0 * If you want to be able to download keys, make sure to uncomment max_reply_keys. Also, you'll probably want to change this from -1 (unlimited) to a more sane value. * BSD (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD): PKS should work on these platforms. However, no current ports of PKS exist. (FreeBSD's and NetBSD's ports of pks-0.9.4 should NOT be used for security reasons.) * Debian Linux users: The Debian package should catch up to pks-0.9.6 very shortly. * RedHat Linux users: Running "rpm -ta pks-0.9.6.tar.gz" should build you the required RPMs. This release is intended to be a solid, stable bugfix and feature upgrade to 0.9.5. Bug reports and patches are always welcome. IBM In Denial Over Lotus Notes? Not

IBM In Denial Over Lotus Notes? Not
Really.
04/07/2005 05:29 AM
As Lotus Notes steadily loses share to Microsoft Exchange, people are seeing similarities to Lotus 1-2-3's loss of share to Microsoft Excel. Microsoft Exchange is outselling Lotus Notes by a large margin, and the only reason Notes still has a hold is because of its entrenched install base. Today, all but one of the top analyst firms recognize Exchange as the leading email product. Yet, IBM and its Lotus Notes consultants still continue to claim that they are the "best selling" email product on the market. Sure, it's marketing spin (and thanks to Gartner, it's not entirely false), but Forbes is missing the point (and watching too much Monty Python). IBM is milking as much revenue from what it already deems a dying product. IBM is strategically doubling down on its services businesses and getting out of businesses that it deems not core to this goal (lapto ps, anyone?). Their willingness to exit a commoditized, competitive email software market in favor of growing other, more lucrative parts of their business is actually a good display of discipline. IBM is not hiding their head in the sand on this one -- they correctly recognize that the holy grail isn't email software.

One Tech Site Notes a Library Service

One Tech Site Notes a Library Service 01/22/2004 03:23 AM
Original SimCity Online

"Classic Live - SimCity.com: I've recently become (re-)addicted to SimCity 3000 (which I checked out from my local library on a 30-day loan, believe it or not). You can play the orignal SimCity online here. Via Metafilter." [Gadgetopia]

This is the first mention of a library I can recall on any of the tech-oriented blogs, and it's not even for a remotely-accessible service like online reference, database access from home, or requesting books via a PDA or cell phone. That's just sad.

With this class you will be able to send error messages to a log file, or send error reports via email.

Lame

Lame 06/05/2005 11:30 PM
Given the frequency at which T-Mobile's systems are compromised, I suppose that this useless and incorrect error message is for...

Lame, lame, lame

Lame, lame, lame 12/17/2003 01:07 PM

I've met, read, and been interviewed by some lazy reporters in my time, but I'm pretty impressed by John Leo's display of ineptitude. He wrote an article about how the left thinks Bush is Hitler and scoured a few site looking for supporting evidence. One of them is MetaFilter. Here is his entire quote:

Another vexing question about Rove: Is he Goebbels or Josef Mengele? Goebbels is the top choice among antiwar commentators, but a writer to the MetaFilter site said: "Karl Rove made up stories about John McCain, just as Josef Mengele conducted medical experiments on children in Auschwitz."

Now read the post he plucked it from.

Clearly -- to anyone that reads the post -- they could see it was posted in a mocking, over-the-top tone. The comment used in the quote is obviously a joke. Other comments on the thread by MetaFilter's conservative and liberal posters were mocking the article and writing it off as pathetic, but Leo used it anyway. It's the laziest display of "journalism" I've seen and now it is being syndicated acros s a range of conservative news sites.

I don't dispute the fact that a small segment of the extreme left thinks bush is hitler. But many pundits on the right have tried to push their viewpoint that extremists are the left going back at least to the WTO protests in Seattle (where a few psycho anarchists were supposed to represent anyone that didn't vote for Bush) and that's ridiculous. It's as ridiculous as trying to paint all conservatives as white supremacists. Quoting someone's joke intended to mock an extremist screed is also ridiculous and beyond the pale.

LAME 3.93 released

LAME 3.93 released 11/18/2002 04:00 PM
The open source MP3 encoder "LAME" is now available at version 3.93. This is the last release of the stable codebase (except a major bug crept in). The next release will contain major code changes which are supposed to deliver better quality and increased speed. We will offer a first beta release of the new code base for testing soon. If you don't want to participate in the development of LAME (by doing listenig tests with the upcomming beta versions), you should grab the actual stable release and be happy with it for a while as it contains some fixes which affect quality, is a little bit faster and should be able to compile out of the box on more systems. You can find a broader description of the changes in the release notes at http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?group_id=290&release_id=1 22796 and the release is available from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=290&release_id=1 22796 together with the the first release of bindings for the LAME library for the Python programming language (py-lame-0.1). As the version number for the python bindings suggest, there's still some work to do. The weak points of py-lame are the unpolished documentation (it is more a reference than a real programming documentation, but a demo application is included) and the rough way to build and install it. If you want to give py-lame a try, you _have_ to install lame 3.93, it doesn't work with older versions of lame. Let's end with the last words of a release engineer: It's well tested and works...
