For just $3300, even
you can have a 16-point buck mounted on your wall and lighted
by fluorescent tubes to showcase to friends and visitors alike your
true hunting prowess. While it might not make the most
feasible story, "I bagged his ghost" is probably your best
bet here. Formed from hand-molded resin, this might make the perfect
addition to any dim and currently normal corner in your loft.

White men bad; white dogs worse
White men bad; white dogs worse
04/05/2005 09:24 AMWe spent the weekend in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with an
anthropologist friend who has two 3-year-old bitches (Lab and
Husky) and 4 acres of land on which Alex and Sammy
could play with them. One of the nice things about colleges
located in areas where real estate is cheap is that the professors
live close to the campus and are available to students for informal
dinners and shared extracurricular activities. Thus over the
weekend we encountered a few other Gettysburg College
professors. I asked one of them whether faculty could bring
their dogs to work. She replied "The college's Affirmative
Action lawyer, before she left, made up a lot of new rules. One
of them was that junior and senior faculty could not sleep
together. Another was to ban dogs in the buildings."
This is a good measure of how desperate PhDs are for jobs as
college professors. The college pays lower salaries, to people
of the same age, as the public high school down the street. The
high school teachers were able to go to work at age 22 without
suffering through a long period of starvation wages as graduate
assistants. The high school teachers are union members who ever
have to worry about losing their job, compared to the college
professors who live for 7 years in fear of being tossed out as a
middle-aged has-been ("denied tenure" is the polite term for this
event). And now these poor souls are expected to get through
their day without a dog at their side and without the possibility of
an interlude with a more senior professor.
[Note to parents: if you want to know why tuition prices have
risen so fast, consider that a very small liberal arts school was
paying a full-time lawyer to work on affirmative action; Walmart has a
"Chief Diversity Officer" but they had $billions in revenue over which
to spread the cost.]

Wow! Congrats to Jason and Tucows!
Wow! Congrats to Jason and Tucows!
03/06/2004 01:50 AMIt's a rare day that something this nice happens.
Jason DeFillippo's Blogrolling.com is one of those diamond's in the
rough, percolating up underneath the surfac - waiting for funding and
support. Now it has it!
Elliot and Ross and are gonna do right by Jason - and that
rocks!
I wonder if they're interested in th
e strategy and ideas I developed for Jason -just about a year
ago?
They could also morph this - with Laszlo - as well.
Here's Ross announcement....
Tucows
Acquires Blogrolling.com.
You may have already read the press
release or a blog entry somewhere else - the rumors are true,
Tucows has indeed purchased the assets of Blogrolling.com from Jason
DeFillippo.
I'm really glad we got together with Jason and were able to come to
a deal. I've been a Blogrolling.com user almost as long as I've been a
blogger and this really is a nifty service. Jason felt it was time to
move on to other things and we knew
that Blogrolling.com is a service worth continuing with and
expanding. A definite match.
The service isn't going anywhere and
we're not turning into some "Blogware only" proprietary mess. The
Tucows ZenKeepers would take away my spots if I tried to do that (or
let that happen). We're looking to go in exactly the opposite
direction. My goal is tomake Blogrolling.com even more
useful to webloggers, weblog tool developers and weblog resellers. We
will do this by opening it up more than it already is and ensure
basic win-wins for everyone.
I'm really looking forward to building on Jason's great work. He's
done an excellent job carving out a niche for the service and really
giving his subscribers a great tool. His innovative and
customer-centric philosophy will always guide our management of this
nifty service moving forward.
And, if it appears that we might be straying away from this ideal,
be sure to let me know.
On the other hand, if have no idea what Blogrolling.com is, now would be a great
time to check it
out. The basic service is free and it couldn't be easier to
integrate into your website. I;ll bet if you ask AccordionGuy nicely,
he'll post som
e nifty instructions describing how to make it work with Blogware
;)

To do in LA: Jason Salavon at El
Proyecto
09/10/2004 12:02 AM
Xeni Jardin:
If you're in the LA area Friday night: Chicago-based artist Jason
Salavon, whose work we've blogged here
before, has a show launch at The Project.
Salavon digitally reconfigures raw source
data into abstract, and often painterly, photographs and videos.
Utilizing self-designed software programs, Salavon's hybridized
artworks fuse information technology with pop cultural aesthetics.
Salavon's recent photographic series, 100 Special Moments,
culls images of newlyweds, graduates, little league players and
traditional Santa portraits to manifest composite images of each
scenario. The artist deconstructs nostalgia to its average mean,
subverting and blurring the lines between singular and collective
social experiences within the framework of commemorative photographs.
For the Emblem series, Salavon interrogates the social
implications of 1970s iconic films, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey,
Taxi Driver and Apocalypse Now, by algorithmically abstracting their
filmic frames in time and subsequently reorganizing them in a circular
structure reminiscent of traditional Mandalas. Late Night
Triad, a three-channel video projection, overlays introductory
monologues from late night talk show hosts David Letterman, Jay Leno,
and Conan O'Brien. Salavon digitally aligns and averages the comedic
routines to expose the inherit repetition in their underlying
structure and rhythmic timing.

Jason Kottke on RSS Ad Blocking
12/17/2004 06:32 PMJason is writing about RSS Ad Blocking: Given that people who use
newsreaders are still of the early adopter sort who are used to
blocking ads with Firefox or fast-forwarding through commercials with
their TiVos, it seems likely that blocking advertising in RSS/Atom
files might soon become an issue. He goes on to post the responses
from the authors of PulpFiction, FeedDemon, and NetNewsWire. It's
worth a read. And I'm sure the discussion will be interesting as
always....

03/14/2005 05:38 PMAs someone who's started two companies, I know the horror and thrill
that comes with giving up a steady paycheck to follow a dream, and I'm
so happy to see that Jason has decided to join the ranks of
entrepreneurs and devote himself to full-time blogging at kottke.org.
Jason is not going to support himself through advertising, rather he
is asking for readers to act as micropatrons of his site and
contribute to its upkeep. Please consider supporting him, not only
because he writes a great site and because supporting dreams is
important. This is the chance to support something new: an "amateur"
deciding to edit a blog full-time without corporate support and
without advertising. It's a long time blogger chosing to go pro, and
Jason is the perfect person to do it.

04/06/2005 09:22 PMHere is the
evidence.
It was during a deabte we had on the Marqui program.
Jason takes this attitude - as many do - that there are rules,
morals and certain values bloggers should have and ethics under which
they should operate - or not.
In other words - the way to freedom is through being told what to
do. Gee - what's wrong with that argument?
Bah - humbag!
So people who try to force their will on others are called
what?

bloody beautiful: Ever

and gestural about them - and the traces of writing and iconography
lingering around the bodies just makes the whole thing seem even less
to do with flesh and still more numinous. Quite beautiful and
evocative.
The same artist achieved similar effects with a triptych of
stills of late night chat-show presenters and used the same
process on images
of homes for sale, which is equally breath-taking.
