Building Custom PHP Extensions

Building Custom PHP Extensions 12/08/2003 07:15 PM
This is a valuable book that addresses an important need that many PHP developers have when it comes to how to take the most of PHP applications developing new extensions. Since it covers also the development of extensions on Windows, the author has demonstrated that he is well aware that despite PHP is an Open Source project, the PHP developers are not interested just on Unix/Linux. This way he made this book very complete and very useful to all of those that would like to build new PHP extensions and make PHP an even better language than it is today.

Short of living under a rock, you are apt by this point to have caught wind of the atrocities that have occurred within the Iraqi prison system under America's watch. Detainees have been beaten, sexually humiliated, and even raped. The dead have been defiled. Furthermore, this is only what we have heard so far. Rumsfeld has told us that we should mentally gird ourselves for worse things in the offing. The world is justified in its moral outrage, as such unspeakable acts have no place in civilized society. One would like to think that such behavior represents the savagery of times long past. Unfortunately, calls for scapegoats and assertions that this is the natural product of America's misadventures in Iraq skirt a far more fundamental issue: the prisons of the world are fucked up.

Worldchanging is a new group blog "covering tools for building sustainability, democracy and open systems." Lots of interesting stuff up there right now, including this Brian Eno challenge:
Tonight, at a rousing lecture sponsored by the Long Now Foundation, Brian Eno described his next undertaking. It's a book, 250 Projects for a Better Future.

Like most good ideas, the premise is deceptively simple: can we describe the 250 projects most critical to building a better future?

2u-google.jpg imageGoogle has a new version of their rack-mountable search appliance designed to provide Google-strength searching to corporate intranets or high-scale public websites. With an updated festive yellow case, the 2U appliance can perform up to 300 queries per minute across up to 1.5 million documents, as well as continuously spider the network for new documents, instead of waiting to check at set intervals. You can't buy the GB-1001, though, only license it, with entry-level contracts starting at $32k. It looks like the heftier GB-5005 and GB-8008 are either using the old casing or new pictures aren't available (or they haven't updated the hardware yet, but that seems unlikely).

David Pescovitz: LambA couple months ago, I posted about the Minnesota Association of Rogue Taxidermists. One of the members, Sarina Brewer, is a taxidermy artist with a wonderful sense of the curious and surreal. Her exquisitely executed "gaffs" (fakes) range from various siamese siblings to winged cats to enchanting renderings of the classic Feejee Mermaid. And her prices are quite reasonable. From Sarina's bio:
Her lifelong obsession with biology often focused on genetic mutations. Study of these deviations of nature eventually led to the the discovery of circus sideshows and "freaks." This influence, as well as a slightly warped sense of humor, manifest themselves in her strange cryptozoological creations and each peculiar artifact she creates. Now incorporating her past formal art education with her passion for biology and the bizarre, you are invited to peruse the culmination of nearly three decades of the study of art and the natural sciences in her eccentric works.

Dates on the web

Dates on the web 12/03/2003 09:45 PM

D. Keith Robinson writes about Using Dates For Featured Web Content. Keith's right, including a date with your content really is a no-brainer. I'll add an anecdote of my own. Several years ago I ran a popular news site for Team Fortress Classic, a team based online first person shooter game with a thriving clan scene. I was careful to include dates on every piece of content, but in my youthful naivety I neglected to include the year. The years rolled by and the content built up until I suddenly realised that I was no longer sure what year some of it was written in! The site has sadly now passed in to history but the lesson remains: the web moves faster than you might think, so omitting the year in your dates is a pretty dumb thing to do.

It's pretty obvious but I'll point out anyway that using dd/mm/yyyy or mm/dd/yyyy for dates on sites is a bad idea as well. Us crazy brits use the former, them crazy yanks use the latter and everyone ends up thoroughly confused about any written date before the 13th of the month. I personally like to use the full "4th December 2003" format, but when space is limited the least ambiguous format is ISO standard YYYY-MM-DD.

Origin of the terms "BCE/CE" for dates?

Origin of the terms "BCE/CE" for dates? 07/12/2004 02:42 AM

A friend who blames Jews for all of the ills that he perceives in American society asked me if it was a Jew who started using "BCE" ("Before the Common Era" rather than BC or "Before Christ") for dates of events that occurred more than 2004 years ago.  Being a scientist and engineer he had only recently come across this coinage and was convinced that it part of a contemporary Jewish plot to deestablish Christianity as America's default religion.

My response was that I believed BCE/CE instead of BC/AD was a bit of 19th century academic pedantry.  I remember seeing the term on yellowed labels next to objects in museums that had been gathering dust for 50+ years.  Given that Jews had only recently escaped from their ghettos in the 19th century and that most classics or Bible scholars would have come from wealthier families, I thought it highly unlikely that a Jew coined the term.  Most likely I thought it was Christian scholars who wished to employ a bit of jargon to make their professional work appear more scientific.  The only etymological reference that I could find was this Word IQ article, that talks about the appearance of the term "Common Era" in a 1908 encyclopedia published by the Roman Catholic Church.

Anyone have a better source for settling this question?  The Oxford English Dictionary and first Supplement don't contain "BCE" or "Common Era".

A European ruling that the outfit must strip its media player from Windows chills chances of a settlement in the EU antitrust case

It's bad enough for Microsoft (MSFT ) that a European judge ruled on Dec. 22 that the software giant will have to disclose proprietary technical information to rivals and sell a version of Windows with its audio and video player stripped out. But the ruling's real damage is far more subtle. Microsoft had hoped that it would win a modest point, a setback for the European Commission that would bring it back to the negotiating table. But its victory was so sweeping that the EC has little impetus to resume talks. And that means Microsoft will continue to slog this case out in court.
