Maverick Seeks Small Towns for
Convergent Wireless Networks
07/19/2004 01:19 PM
Seattle-area firm focuses on towns under 50,000 to bring data at affordable price: By partnering with local utilities in these smaller towns, Maverick can reduce its capital risk and focus entirely on service. The company charges $25 to $60 per month for rates from about 128 Kpbs to 1 Mbps. They may be in 23 markets by fall 2005, including their current deployments being built out in Kennewick, Silverdale, and Poulsbo. Although this brief company overview doesn't mention it, an important application for having these kinds of robust Internet connections is for Internet telephony. If you're in a rural area, "local calling" is quite local. A VoIP line from Vonage or Packet8 could dramatically decrease the charges for calling within the state as well as for long distance....

When to consider utility computing

When to consider utility computing 04/13/2004 04:53 AM
Many organizations are expanding their use of online services on a global scale, using a range of diverse computing and communications devices on an increasingly real-time basis. Their CIOs want to monitor what IT resources are being used and what they cost, and want to provide business solutions rather than manage systems integration. These dynamics are the fundamental drivers for utility computing, a technology platform where computing, storage, applications, and network resources are available as needed, and where customers are billed on a pay-per-use basis. The vision of utility computing is to access information services in a fashion similar to those provided by telephone, cable TV, or electric utilities.

How many of you recognize those 4 letters? I do and understand when I stick a CD into my computer and have my music player of choice catalog the CD that my music player goes out to the CDDB database and pulls in all of the info that I would otherwise have to type myself. Album Graphics, Title, Song titles and a lot more information. Who is the savior that came up with this technology. Well a Wired article today takes a look at Gracenote the company behind CDDB. Still an Access Gap

Still an Access Gap 08/18/2004 06:41 PM
Mike Wendland of the Detroit Free Press writes about wireless connectivity options when Wi-Fi isn't available: He looks at a Blackberry, the Treo 600 smartphone and a data card from Verizon. The bottom line is that none of the options is ideal. The subscription for the Verizon card is too expensive and the handhelds are too limited in what users can do with them. With all the different available wireless technologies, it's amazing that none of them is quite right for mass appeal. I wrote a story a couple of weeks ago looking at a handful of those technologies and I didn't have the space to even mention all of the options. I got an email from a reader bemoaning the loss of Ricochet's service and asking if I knew of anything similar that's available now. Ricochet seems like ancient history these days so it's amazing that a similar solution with a solid business plan hasn't emerged yet. The combination of cellular data and Wi-Fi may ultimately offer the ideal solution--true high speed when it's available, slower but usable data rates elsewhere. It seems that service, with a decent price and solid client devices, can't come soon enough....

Who Needs Public Access TV When You've
Got The Web?
07/01/2004 03:46 AM
The NY Times seems to have discovered that amateurs are out there creating internet TV stations, some of which are getting quite popular. Yes, the NY Times is sometimes a bit behind the times, but at least they noticed at some point. Still, it's worth noting (once again) that what makes the internet so useful isn't that it's a broadcast medium, but a two way medium that is letting anyone become a content creator. While the entertainment industry may be afraid of things like TiVo and downloads, they don't seem to realize that the real competition is coming from creative people who are simply routing around the entire industry.

The More You Pay, the More Access Costs

The More You Pay, the More Access Costs 05/18/2004 01:17 AM
Kathy Gill encounters highway robbery in her hotel room: $14.95 per day, per machine: My colleague Kathy Gill is at the WWW2004 conference in New York, and has been astounded by the Sheraton's data charges: $14.95 per day for wireless access in the hotel, and another $14.95 per day per person for in-room access. She's peeved. It's this irritation that could ultimately transform hotel Wi-Fi. If Kathy had $20 to $80 per month unlimited cell data access (anywhere from 10-50 Kbps up to a few hundred K download speed), even with the slower upload speeds of cellular networks, she might have foregone the $14.95 per day fee. In which case, how does the hotel recoup that money? They can't. Take the alternative experience, in which my wife and I spent three nights on the Oregon Coast this last week. I wasn't working, and just wanted to briefly check my email on the road. The first night, we stayed at an older motel in the process of becoming a resort. For $9.95, I could have had wireless service, but I didn't need to spend that much. My ISP lacked an 800# and local numbers on the coast. I wound up using my GSM (9600 bps -- yes, bits per second) cell phone service which on Cingular's network comes out of my minutes pool. Next night, again with no concern about access, we chose a hotel that was about 30 percent cheaper and claimed wireless Internet access for free. Ah, but not in the cheaper part of the hotel. I didn't need access badly enough to roam to the part of the hotel in which I could get service, so I turned again to the cell phone. The third night, we stayed at a Best Western in a small town. The room was nice, the rate was 30 percent less than the second night's, and the deal included free in-room wired broadband and free breakfast. Guess which hotel I'll choose first next time? All Best Westerns will soon have free in-room broadband--as will most budget hotel chains around the U.S. Hotels that charge for service might find their high-end customers turning to cell data as that becomes more available and less expensive--or losing customers to the cheaper chains. (Our first and last nights of our trip were spent at my brother-in-laws and my parents'--both of which offered free Wi-Fi throughout the property.)...
