Radiuz Combines WPA-Enterprise with Free
Access

Radiuz Combines WPA-Enterprise with Free
Access
06/16/2004 04:24 PM
Radiuz offers WPA-Enterprise logins to free networks at no charge: Radiuz is a grand experiment in providing enterprise-scale security and encryption to free networks. Any network that wants to use Radiuz's authentication has to have an access point that handles pass-through 802.1X authentication, which most consumer units do. The access point is configured to talk to Radiuz's server, and that's it. Radiuz is using WPA-Enterprise, as the Wi-Fi Alliance terms it, which is 802.1X port-based authentication coupled with WPA encryption keys. Radiuz further layers PEAP (Protected EAP) on top to provide a secure exchange of credentials with their server. Radiuz tries to solve four interconnected problems with home and small-business networking. First, security isn't tight enough: most home users leave encryption off because it's annoying to manage. Second, even users who want to share their network connection are slightly leery of letting anonymous folks onboard. The development of NoCatAuth and LessNetworks's adaptation of that software are both attempts to provide accountability--in the former case, through a click-through terms of service; and adding user accounts in the latter case, although the accounts are free. Third, WPA-Personal uses a static key for all users, making it possible for one user with a WPA key to sniff the traffic of any other user. Distributing a WPA-Personal key to "protect" a network doesn't help protect it in that way. (A WPA key that's kept private among a home or workgroup does, however.) Fourth, WPA-Enterprise is beyond affordable for most smaller businesses, although products like Interlink Network's LucidLink and Wireless Security Corporation's Wireless Security Guard are steps in that direction. John Leibovitz is one of the founders of Radiuz, and we spoke recently about the organization's goals. Leibovitz describes Radiuz as a "cross between Wi-Fi and Friendster in a very kind of loose way." He and his co-founder Stephen Robinson want to build a community of registered users first and then see how to connect them. "The goal is really to build up that network, and to think creatively beyond that about how to make that economically sustaining," he said. Authentication will always remain free, however. People who want to join the Radiuz network sign up and receive information on how to configure their access point to use Radiuz's servers. Users who want access to Radiuz authenticated networks need to sign up out of band: you can't connect to the free network you need credentials....

David Weinberger points at the "Send Back Your MP3" site this morning.  I think this is just the thing for children of all ages - from eight to eighty - we can all start to feel better about ourselves by sending back our MP3s to the RIAA.  As for me, I prefer the hex dump, but you might want to save a tree in your neck of the woods and fax the data back electronically!  I know I have a fax program that doesn't require me to print out out hard copy before I fax.  Maybe you do too!

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools 05/17/2004 10:25 AM

Open Source: Open Source Scripting Made Easy: This is an article about PHP scripting tools that makes an important point:

Commercial scripting languages have drawn success from powerful and widely used development tools: ASP has Visual Studio, ColdFusion has Macromedia's Dreamweaver, and JSP has a variety of tools from commercial sources such as Borland and open source projects such as Eclipse and NetBeans. PHP's enormous success, however, is not tied to specific tools.

Some friends of mine have been working with Microsoft's .Net platform. They tell me it's amazing ("fan-friggin'-tastic," one of them called it). This is great, but I guess I don't like anything where the barrier to entry is so high — first you have to have a Windows server, then you have to have the Windows dev environment.

I code PHP in EditPlus, which cost me all of $30, and that was an optional purchase because there are so many other free alternatives. Maybe I'm just a snob. Via PHP|Architect.

How Free is Free Republic?

How Free is Free Republic? 12/30/2003 01:11 AM
Free Republic is an online story and discussion site similar to Kuro5hin.org, but with an explicitly conservative bias. The site proclaims itself to be "an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web." Intrigued, I proceeded to offer some comments to stories there, addressing some factual errors and dissenting with some conservative views. The result was a quick lesson in the right-wing view of free expression. The experiment left an open question - where do you go on the web to engage conservatives in open debate? Where is the right-wing version of k5?

Enterprise PHP

Enterprise PHP 07/22/2002 11:42 AM
If you are too popular, jealous people are always saying behind your back that you are a compulsive schmoozer, or you are insecure, or insincere. Well PHP is an Open Source language that is widely popular on the web. However because PHP so popular in shared hosting environments, many people have an impression that PHP is only for small scale web-sites. This is patently untrue, and PHP is in use in many large scale web sites such as Yahoo Finance and for the creation of large web applications such as IMP. This article is an attempt to readdress the balance and show how PHP is used in the enterprise.

The conversational enterprise 03/15/2003 12:10 PM
Bottom-up vs. top-down taxonomy is an old, ongoing KM struggle. But the emerging architecture of business process automation may help us cut that Gordian knot. XML documents, produced and consumed by Web services but also by people running a new generation of XML-savvy applications, will be the currency of the information economy. Richly structured, easily captured, and embedded in well-defined business contexts, they'll be a godsend for tools that mine knowledge from documents. F ull story at InfoWorld.com

Here's Edwin Khodabakchian's take on InfoPath, an example of the kind of "XML-savvy application" I had in mind:
Infopath is a kind of Blog++: the manipulated data is rich and structured (expense report, travel request, hotel reservation, employee review), meaning that when the data is published back to the server can be processed by an array of services, processes, agents. [Collaxa's Take]
Exactly. Collaboration tools have to move heaven and earth to mine knowledge and infer social networks from email traffic. While it is notionally private, many email exchanges -- "here's the revised version with the changes we discussed" -- are really semi-public in scope. The same holds true for many voice interactions. ...

Windows XP SP2 Express Installer

Windows XP SP2 Express Installer 08/14/2004 04:42 AM
For those of you how have been waiting for Microsoft to release the express installer for Service Pack 2 because 272MB is too much for you, the wait is now over.

Typical users of the express installer should expect a 80-90MB download, since the express installer only downloads updates for components that your computer has. This is a more reasonable size for dial-up users, and others who can't spare the bandwidth.

There is no difference in the files that are downloaded between this version and the full network install, except that the network install will contain content that your computer probably will not use. Also, it should be noted that you cannot use the express installer to create slipstream installs.

Windows Installer 3 Update 09/09/2004 10:58 AM
Microsoft have released info on the progress of their next generation installer sofware, version 3.

"Since the general availability of Windows XP Service Pack 2, the Windows Installer team has received numerous inquiries about the status of the Windows Installer 3.0. We wanted to give everyone an update and pointers to where you can find the information you need. The Windows Installer 3.0 is released in three pieces:

The first piece is the actual bits that shipped as part of Windows XP Service Pack 2. Service Pack 2 is widely available through Windows Update as well as from here.

The second piece is the SDK documentation and tools that are available of the Windows XP Service Pack 2 SDK that is now available from here.

The final piece is the down level redistributable for Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and 4, Windows XP, Windows XP Service Pack 1, and Windows Server 2003. Unfortunately, we have experienced a delay in making this redistributable available. We expect to make the redistributable available in September, but we do not yet have a firm date."
