06/17/2004 05:32 AMMobilization of Software Developers: The Free Software
Movement by Margret S. Elliott and Walter Scacchihttp://ope
nsource.mit.edu/papers/elliottscacchi2.pdfAbstract by Author:Free/open source software
(F/OSS) development projects are growing at a rapid rate. Globally
dispersed virtual communities with large groups of software developers
contribute time and effort often without pay. One force behind this
phenomenon is the Free Software Movement (FSM), a 20 year-old social
movement whose purpose is to promote the use of free software instead
of proprietary software. We show how the ideology of the FSM
influences software development work practices in F/OSS communities
and how an occupational community of F/OSS developers has emerged from
this movement. We present results from an empirical study of a F/OSS
development community, GNUenterprise (GNUe) whose purpose is to build
an Enterprise Resource Planning system. We show how the beliefs in
freedom and freedom of choice, and the values of cooperative work and
community building are manifested in the GNUe norms of informal
self-management, immediate acceptance of fellow contributors, and open
disclosure.

Offer $10,000 Software Challenge to the
Email Industry
06/22/2005 01:51 AMFor years, SMTP server software was used to send and receive e-mail
communications. These older servers, usually freeware, have created
many delivery challenges. Most of the time, marketers, CEO’s and even
CMO’s are completely unaware of these issues. The owners of
ActivSoftware, in central New York, introduced a worldwide challenge
to prove their software system (http://www.activsoftware.com/xms) is
one of a kind in the email industry. [PRWEB Jun 19, 2005]

How can free software compete with

How can free software compete with
commercial developers?
11/05/2003 10:55 AMThe amazing thing about the free vs. proprietary software race is that
free software is in it at all. With all the resources larger
proprietary software companies have at their command, you'd think
their products would be unfailingly easy to use, virtually bug-free,
and priced so low that no one would mind paying for them. But this is
not the case. Why isn't it? You'd think a software company full of
carefully-selected programmers, project leaders, market researchers,
quality control personnel, professional documentation writers, and a
technical support staff would have no trouble beating any open source
project -- with both hands tied behind its corporate back -- even if
it gave the open source project a 3 km lead in a 5 km race.

What proprietary software can teach open

04/12/2005 08:04 AMBeing the best doesn't always mean being the most popular. We all know
of many inferior products that are immensely, sometimes perplexingly,
popular. However, this does not mean that one must forsake the pursuit
of excellence when pursuing a broad market share. As proponents of
open source software, it should not be beneath us to pursue popularity
or to look to proprietary developers as examples. And by following the
right examples, we can help spread the usage of open source software
without sacrificing the goal of software excellence.

11/10/2003 10:54 PMBroadreach is building Wi-Fi hot spots in 20 stations along Virgin's
west coast rail line in the U.K.: The hot spots will just cover the
stations. The article says the network will "likely" use satellite for
the downstream and cellular for the up. The operator of the east coast
line in the U.K., GNER, is also building hot spots over its stations.
Busy train lines in the U.S. should be working on this too. One in San

07/25/2004 09:09 AMDavid Heinemeier Hansson has published the first release of Rails, his MVC
implementation for Ruby. Rails is the system David developed to power
BaseCamp, the 37 Signals
project management app. David had previously released Active
Record, his O-R mapping layer for Rails, which is the slickest
method of database access I've ever seen, so I'm excited to see what
his MVC implementation looks like.
We heard David speak at "The Building of BaseCamp" ,and he's a pretty impressive
guy. Most of the folks I've heard from with his level of skill have
been employees of Microsoft or Sun.

07/29/2004 09:42 AMApple Computer on Thursday issued a scathing response to
RealNetworks' move to unlock Apple's proprietary technology and make
it possible for people to listen to music in RealNetworks' digital
file format on iPod devices.
In a terse statement, a "stunned" Apple accused RealNetworks
of adopting "the tactics and ethics of a hacker" with the
release of its Harmony
software, which allows songs sold via its online store to be
played on a variety of portable devices, including Apple's iPod and
Microsoft-compatible rivals. Apple threatened to block access to the
iPod using Harmony the next time it updates the software used to run
the device. The company last week
unveiled the fourth generation of
the trend-setting music player.
"It is highly likely that Real's Harmony technology will cease to
work with current and future iPods," the company said in its
statement. In addition, Apple said that it is investigating the
implications of Real's
software strategy under the
Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and other laws. The DMCA
broadly restricts the
bypassing of copy-protection technologies used in DVDs and in some
music CDs and software programs.
