The latest in the Diebold saga in California is that Attorney General Bill Lockyer has decided to sue the company, saying they made false claims about their product. Amusingly, Diebold continues to mislead in their response to the lawsuit by noting that they are: "pleased Lockyer dropped the probe." When the only reason the probe has been dropped is because there's enough info to sue, it seems like there's not much to be "pleased" about.

Graham Parsons memorial concert

Graham Parsons memorial concert 07/07/2004 02:40 AM

One of my heros is Graham Parsons.... read this excellent article (from Reuters) about the concert they just did honoring him.)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Gram Parsons (news) embodied the rock 'n' roll cliche -- live fast, die young, become immortal.

In his brief 26 years, the fortunate son of a wealthy Florida family helped popularize country rock by recording albums with the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers and a pair of LPs under his own name. Along the way, Parsons influenced the Rolling Stones and discovered Emmylou Harris.

Yet his songs, such as "Hot Burrito #1" and "$1000 Wedding," never lifted him beyond cult status, in part because of his hard-living ways.

At least the bizarre aftermath of his 1973 death ensures he will never be forgotten: his remains were incinerated in the California desert by a drunken buddy who stole his body to make good on a promise. His only child, who was 7 years old at the time, remembers hearing about her father's death on the news.

Now, Polly Parsons has corralled A-list musicians such as Keith Richards, Norah Jones, Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams to perform at two tribute concerts for her father in the Los Angeles area this weekend.

"Return to Sin City: A Tribute to Gram Parsons" will take place on July 9 at the Santa Barbara Bowl, and July 10 at the Universal Amphitheater near Hollywood. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Musicians' Assistance Program, which provides assistance for alcohol and drug rehabilitation to people in the music industry.

Richards, who hosted Parsons at his French country manor during the recording of the Stones' landmark 1972 album "Exile on Main St.," was the latest addition to the bill, agreeing late last month to honor his fallen friend.

"There's a guy who never had a hit record, was never like the raging No. 1, and yet people still talk about him as if he's the greatest icon of all time," Richards says on his official Web site .

"An amazingly straight-up guy, magnetic, you know? I mean, the two of us together, look out ... I miss the man sorely."

A "FABULOUS" DEATH

Polly Parsons and her father's widow, Gretchen, share equally in the modest proceeds from Gram Parsons' estate. His copyrights have just reverted to their control, and Polly has plans to exploit the catalog more aggressively so that his music can reach beyond a small core of fans.

"There's so much new interest in authentic music, and in country, and roots-rock Americana. He is the forefather," she said in a recent interview at her Los Angeles home, filled with memorabilia relating to her father.

A nurse by training, she recently launched the Gram Parsons Foundation, which she hopes will complement other charities that help musicians or provide music in schools.

Her father's memory also lives on in a recent BBC documentary, "Fallen Angel," featuring rare performance footage, and in an independent film, "Grand Theft Parsons," which was loosely based on the events following her father's death.

Inevitably, it's his post-mortem adventures that fascinate people to this day. After Parsons died of a drug overdose in his beloved desert hideaway of Joshua Tree, California, his body was set to be taken to New Orleans for burial. But his road manager, Phil Kaufman, stole it from Los Angeles International Airport and brought it back to the desert and set it alight.

Polly Parsons thinks the whole thing is "fabulous," though at the time her family was shocked to learn that he had been "burned to a crisp," having not known about the prearranged death pact.

"It's a bit novel, and the stuff stories are made of, obviously. It's epic. It's epic in proportion! It's rock 'n' roll, it's fantastic! It just happened to be my dad!"

Bang and Olufsen

Bang and Olufsen 12/03/2002 06:53 PM
I went to Bang and Olufsen's website today in my favorite browser, Mozilla. But instead of the juicy e-commerce I was anticipating, I instead received a nice message telling me that Internet Explorer was needed. I wasn't even allowed to attempt to venture their site with my blasphemous and obviously incompetent web browser. So, in search of some quality audio equipment I dusted off Internet Explorer, and went to their site. For a laugh, I chose to view their source. First of all, there are 89 lines of Javascript before you even see an <html> tag, then another 110 lines of horribly ugly Javascript follow. And to top it all off, after clicking on the Buy Online button on the page for the headphones I wanted, I was sent to a zip code form that found me the nearest store location; not exactly the kind of online shopping I was hoping for. I'd be happy to redesign their site for them, granted they give me a plasma television and some audio equipment.
