Boing Boing pal
Scott Beale informs us that our blog just won
Group Weblog of the Year at the
Bloggies. OMG! What a huge honor! Thank you, Bloggies. We honestly
didn't expect this, and we are deeply moved and grateful. There were
many other deserving blogs up for awards, backed by talented folks who
work very hard, and we raise our collective pirate-eye-patches in
their honor:
check 'em all
out. On behalf of my blog-mates
Cory Doctorow,
Mark Frauenfelder, and
David Pescovitz; our wise "band manager"
John Battelle; our sysadmin
par excellence Ken Snider; and the rest of the team and extended
family that makes Boing Boing possible -- a humble thank you. But most
of all, we are grateful to you, our readers, for wasting otherwise
productive time on our collective scrapbook of "wonderful things," and
for pointing us to even more of those wonderful and undiscovered
things each day. We're really sorry that we couldn't make it to
SXSW in person to accept the award,
but we hope you'll join us in celebrating in person tomorrow at
ETCON (
all five of us will be in the same place for the first time).
Boing Boing sprouted online a little over
five years ago, from paper zine roots planted by Mark Frauenfelder
and
Carla
Sinclair. It is a privilege to blog for you. With you, we look
forward to another adventurous year of link-discuss to come.

Update: Holy crap! Reader Nathaneal Heasley
sez, "Not only did BB win best group ‘blog, it won “blog of the
year/best weblog overall” – congratulations!" For those keeping
track, this is the second year in a row Boing Boing has received these
two awards: Link to 2004, Link to 2005. Man. We're
speechless, and overwhelmed by your generosity.

muses about "T9 Freudian slips," when intended words are substituted
for others by your cell phone's predictive text interface, subverting
the meaning of your SMS entirely.
He was walking home got
an SMS from a friend asking if she could borrow some eggs. He tried to
type:
i have eggs but i can't vouch for them since i only bake with
them and i haven't baked in a while
... but when he looked at the keyboard, he realized that T9 had
mucked up several of the words. Instead, it read:
i hate eggs but i can't touch them since i only able with them
and i haven't baked in a while.

07/29/2004 02:59 PMAh, you gotta love it when the technology bites you in the ass.
The previous
post was a draft of my CNN
wrap-up, with all of my screw-ups, typos, and bad edits. Goes to
show me for using my weblogging software to write up these posts. One
missed click, and what you write is up and out there. Such is how the
sausage is made.
Things are really crazy at the convention. There's a lot going on,
all at the same time, and up here in blogger's alley, we've got the
loudspeakers pointing right at us, and crowds cheering, waving signs,
and just being generally raucus. Even the lousy dancing during the
breaks. I looked over and commented to some of the folks here about
the need for a "7th Inning stretch" - and then it hit me - that's what
the dancing is for. But I sure wish they didn't televise it, it's
painful. :-)

The site
focuses on the benefits of reallocating low-frequency wireless
capacity from broadcasting to unlicensed applications, both here and
around the world. There is a huge amount of capacity which could be
used for two-way applications like broadband to the home, but which is
locked up in broadcast allocations based on 1950s technology. Freeing
up that capacity could create massive opportunities for innovation,
and could dramatically lower the costs of wireless connectivity in
developing countries. The blog will serve as a sounding board for our
commentary on this issue. We will be writing whitepapers as
well.

=================
Phishing attacks use \'spoofed\' e-mails and fraudulent websites
designed to fool recipients into divulging personal financial data
such as credit card numbers, account usernames and passwords, social
security numbers, etc. By hijacking the trusted brands of well-known
banks, online retailers and credit card companies, phishers are able
to convince up to 5% of recipients to respond to them.

Contact information
Contact information
03/13/2003 10:16 AMThere's been some confusion recently as how to contact me, it seems,
regarding things that don't fit in the comments...
Future-Proofing Contact Information
Future-Proofing Contact Information
01/26/2004 12:36 PMHow do you future-proof contact information? It strikes me that,
through the years, I migrate from one messaging platform to another,
but I'm generally contacting the same people. My Mom is going to be
my Mom no matter what email client I'm using. Probably true for my
wife, too.
So, when I switch from Outlook to Outlook Express to Mozilla Mail
to Thunderbird, I'm having to export and import all my contact
information every time, hope I don't lose anything in translation, and
hope that it stays constant even when subject to the quirks and
vagaries of each platform.
Should there be a XML schema for archiving contact information, so
that it's always the same? So I could just put people in this XML
file, then import to various platforms as I switched (or, if they
don't support the schema, do an XSL transform to something they
do support)? So this XML file would be the one, true source
for information about the people I know.
(Even taking out the XML angle, is it worthwhile to abstract your
contact information away from a particular client? Regardless of what
you store it in, is it just good practice to keep it in a
vendor-neutral, highly-exportable format rather than a proprietary
app?)
It concerns me that, as I wander through various software, I don't
have a "home base" for all my contact information; a format that my
mother's contact information can live in from here to eternity. Is
this the point where the mother of invention requires that I invent
the schema?

Creative Commons or Public
Domain -licensed music and media. Very good, and all the best to
them! There's not much content, but they have teamed up with
Loca
Records, so something might be happening there...
However, in order for something like that to be useful (because
whatever you may think of the record companies, they do weed out a lot
of crap), some sort of preferences/recommendation system might be
needed. For example, personal, public, top-10 lists, which one could
subscribe to using RSS or browse on the web... People get a lot of
music based on recommendations from a trusted friend (or other
source), simply because searching through all the available music is
impossible. You could spend all your life browsing through the iTunes music
library, and not find your favourite music...
(From a thread from
net.nyt which contained a bunch of interesting links, though the
discussion is pretty much hashing the same old issues that have been
heard many times.)
Update: There's a wonderful article on How Copyright Could Be Killing
the Culture in the Globe and the Mail
It's enough of a legal rigmarole to make underfunded filmmakers simply
avoid using archival clips altogether or to remove footage that they
shot themselves that might include someone singing a popular hit or
even Happy Birthday to You (a copyrighted song).
It also means that films like Eyes on the Prize, made in a less
restrictive era of copyright rules, can simply fade away if the task
of renewing copyrights becomes too difficult or costly.
These are exactly the reasons why things like Creative Commons are
so important, and why the copyright terms should be shortened to
something sane, say 50 years.

07/13/2004 01:35 PMWell, tmenezes stern demands in the queue cowed me.* And the general
opinion, amongst both users and staff here, was that sponsorship was a
stupid idea. In principle, I don't agree (though it did need some
changes from the original concept), but I'm willing to go along with
the tide. Hopefully I will get a chnace to try out sponsorship
somewhere else in the future. So new user accounts are open again,
without any changes. We've had a bit of a cooling off period, I've
kicked out a pretty hefty number of idiots (who I expect to have to
kick out again and again, but what the hell). There's a few more
people with the powers and mandate to keep an eye on new users and nip
the annoying ones in the bud. There are also a couple features coming
to help the rest of you let us know who is being a jerk. Meanwhile,
those of you who've emailed me asking when you could get an account,
the time is now. Enjoy. * No, not really. Actually they would have

problem with our mail server.

Philly Opened the Floodgates
09/02/2004 01:45 PMSince yesterday when the city of Philadelphia said it hopes to build
Wi-Fi networks covering the entire city, two other cities say they're
also looking into similar plans: The city of Madison, Wis. is closely
watching the Philadelphia plan to blanket the city in Wi-Fi in hopes
of following suit. This is one of the first times I've seen a city
official discuss the affect that a city-run network might have on
other commercial services. Madison officials are carefully considering
how they should go about building the network and what it should cost
for users because of the affect the network might have on other
operators. I've wondered how commercial operators feel about
municipalities using city funds to build networks that compete for
their business. In addition, a city councilor in Boston said he wants
to cover all of Boston with Wi-Fi [link via John]. While the cities of
Philadelphia, Boston, and Madison talk about building networks, Culver
City, Calif. said that next Thursday it will launch a free Wi-Fi
network in its downtown area. Vernier and Firetide are supplying the
equipment for the network. In other new network news, the State of
Michigan also announced that SBC would build hotspots in ten Michigan
State-owned parks, docks, and rest areas....
