The company has added support for Broadcast Wave Format (BWF), which enables the R-4 to write the metadata required to comply with that standard. BWF files can be used in any playback device or audio editor that is compatible with the WAV format. The R-4 features a 40GB hard drive and USB 2.0 connectivity, with the ability to hold up to 17 hours of material at 24-bit/96kHz quality or up to 58 hours at 16-bit/44.1kHz, which is comparable to a CD.

So MCE Technologies has released a new version of its QuickStream DV, an external. ruggedized FireWire hard drive with a few tricks up its sleeve that makes it a useful companion to any DV camcorder. In fact, it pretty much removes the need for DV tape entirely by connecting directly to your camera's FireWire port and capturing video as you shoot it. The QuickStream DV also has built-in flash memory buffers which it uses for something called "SureCapture," which can save up to six seconds of DV video even when the QuickStream is in standby mode, giving it enough time to spin up its hard drive and start going. Then when you're done, remove the rechargable hard drive and hook it up to your PC or Mac and get all non-linear on it right then and there.

At prices starting around $600 for a 1.5-hour model and going up from there, the QuickStream DV isn't necessarily a solution for the average Sunday shooter quite yet. But for pros and semi-pros looking to remove tape from their rigs entirely, it looks like a really excellent way to go about it.

MCE Technologies is now shipping the newest version of its QuickStream DV, a portable video capture drive that can be mounted to a camera. The updated drive ships in 20GB (one-and-a-half hour capacity), 40GB (three hours), 60GB (four-and-a-half hours) and 80GB (six hours) models and offers several new features, including the ability to play film clips on a DV camcorder's LCD screen and SureCapture, which continuously stores up to six seconds of video in the QuickStream DV's video buffer and adds the footage to the front of a shot when you press the Record button. It can capture clips in QuickTime, raw DV, Windows AVI2 and Canopus AVI2 formats and it ships with MCE StreamManager, an application that displays all clips currently on the drive and allows you to preview, rename, delete, copy or move them as well as view available storage capacity and remaining recording time.

GmailFS provides a mountable Linux filesystem which uses your Gmail account as its storage medium. GmailFS is a Python application and uses the FUSE userland filesystem infrastructure to help provide the filesystem, and libgmail to communicate with Gmail.

GmailFS supports most file operations such as read, write, open, close, stat, symlink, link, unlink, truncate and rename. This means that you can use all your favourite unix command line tools to operate on files stored on Gmail (e.g. cp, ls, mv, rm, ln, grep etc. etc.).

We've had a lot of stories in the last six months or so about shortsighted companies deciding to simply ban camera phones outright. In the past, I wondered if such rules would have an impact on mobile phone sales, but I didn't expect the carriers to jump on this topic so quickly. Put me in the same surprised boat as Alan Reiter to hear that carriers are convincing mobile phone handset makers to offer multiple versions of their phones: one with a camera and the other without. I really thought that with only a few companies overreacting and missing the point about camera phones, it would blow over, and a decade from now we'd be laughing at silly companies banning camera phones. At this rate, that might not be true. This is going to be a huge waste of money. Designing a new phone will take some money, and will create a phone that offers less value to the customer (and less opportunity for revenue for the carrier). However as camera phones begin to find more acceptance in the marketplace, people are going to get angry when their boss tells them the expensive phone they just bought can't be brought into the office. They're not going to want to buy the version without the camera if part of the reason they're upgrading is for the camera in the first place. This is a (costly) over reaction to a technology that will do nothing to stop the real problem (theft of corporate secrets or invasion of privacy), but will cost lots of money and anger many people.
