Insider's Tips

MediaBistro's upcoming 'How to Write Technology Reviews'
seminar sounds like a lot of work to us. Save yourself the $65 fee and
learn the real secrets from Gizmodo's team of professional fake trade
journalists. Instructor Michael J. Martinez offers to teach you the
following, while we give you the goods for free:
• How to get your hands on cutting-edge gear
Insider's Tip: Call PR firm president at home, claiming you are
from a big organization, like CNET or Engadget.
• What do to when putting a review item through its paces
Insider's Tip: Show review item to friends, rating their envy on
a scale from one to ten. Do this the night before your
deadline.
• How to evaluate documentation and accessories
Insider's Tip: Did documentation overflow your trash can? If so,
it is 'comprehensive, but a bit technical'; if not, documentation is
'scant but colorful.' Do not remove accessories from product box as
they would unfairly influence your ability to get them back into the
box.
• Tricks to make your review a compelling read
Insider's Tip: Start with a fond anecdote from your childhood,
contrasted with an insulting or adulatory mention of the iPod. See: T;
See Also: A.
• How to build coverage of a new product into a trend
story
Insider's Tip: If $item = "iPod" goto "2003" else $item = "iPod
Killer?"; sub kids_gadget {echo "Are your kids [having sex|doing
drugs|in danger of kidnapping?]}
• How to involve real people in a review story
Insider's Tip: Invent likely-sounding names with likely-sounding
color quotes, unless pitching to MIT Technology Review or Wired News.
In those cases, make the color quotes from celebrities, whose quotes
the media are legally not obligated to fact-check, especially if they
are hilarious.
• Where to pitch your reviews and trend pieces
Insider's Tip: Libraries; Gamestop; Wendy's. Anywhere technology
editors forage in the wild.
Sure fire bet: grow a beard, approach editors at conventions with
your ink jet-printed business card; wear giant camera over utility
vest, use crumbs from finger food to draw attention to your
commemorative technology conference badge from 1996.
Also, if trend story is two months stale, there's always the The
Times.

The new Doctor Who reviews
The new Doctor Who reviews
04/14/2005 01:59 PM
The new Doctor Who
series has been airing on BBC Television for three weeks now. And it
is "good TV" Most all of the reviews are startlingly positive, far
more than I've seen for a television series in a long, long time.
What is most striking is that many of the commentaries about the
"New Who" state that it is just plain ole' good television
that combines something intelligent, something scary, something
mysterious and something balls-out fun. In our world of reality
television, what other series would you classify as being "good
tv"? What makes for "good TV"? (Link goes to a fan
site that has re-printed and linked to numerous reviews)

02/14/2004 11:51 PMAmazon Glitch Unmasks
War of Reviewers: Amazon accidentally posted the real names of
anonymous book reviewers on their site, and in the process, revealed
that the whole user-submitted review process is garbage.
But even with reviewer privacy restored, many people say
Amazon's pages have turned into what one writer called "a rhetorical
war," where friends and family members are regularly corralled to
write glowing reviews and each negative one is scrutinized for the
digital fingerprints of known enemies.
One well-known writer admitted privately — and gleefully — to
anonymously criticizing a more prominent novelist who he felt had
unfairly reaped critical praise for years. She regularly posts
responses, or at least he thinks it is her, but the elegant rebuttals
of his reviews are also written from behind a
pseudonym.

Nikon Coolpix 5900 Reviewed (Verdict:
Good for Newbies)
04/18/2005 08:22 AM
The
Nikon Coolpix 5900 is a step towards the consumer camera of the
future. It doesn't offer a lot of finesse, like manual exposure
control over aperture and shutter speeds, but it does offer things
like 'Face-Priority AF,' (automatic focus on human faces) and
D-Lighting (automatic contrast correction). Now they don't always
work—the Face-Priority in particular has some problems
picking the right face on which to focus—but when they do they
can make taking high-quality pictures much easier for people that
don't know what they're doing. That said, if you're already a
photography champ, the $350 Nikon 5900 is only going to get in your
way.
Photography Blog has a typically in-depth review with sample images
and more.

Out of seemingly nowhere emerges the Nikon Coolpix
S1, obviously a stab at recent offerings from Casio and Sony (think
Exilim and Cybershot T series). But gee whiz, I had no idea a Nikon
could look anything like this — it has a 5.1MP CCD and 0.75"
thick aluminum body. Estimated at around 45,000 yen, the S1 provides
3x optical zoom, a boatload of photographic features I'm having a hard
time translating like "Face Clear Function", a 2.5" monitor and SD
memory card slot. Expect to see the S1 available in three colors:
Metal Silver, Dolce Black and Cream White.

Nikon 4 Megapixel Coolpix 4100
05/28/2004 12:44 PM
Nikon's got a new Coolpix coming out this summer with
a 4-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, 1.6-inch LCD and--in a rare
return to early digicam form--14.5MB of internal memory. The Coolpix
4100 will also take SD cards for additional storage and should be
price around $300. One thing I love about Nikon is that they tend to
release their own underwater housings for their cameras and the 4100
will be getting one, as well. Even though many 3rd party housings are
just as good or better, it's usually a lot easier to buy from the
manufacturer.
