A Brief Look At Professional Gaming
07/25/2004 04:01 PMThe other day I came across an old friend while doing my weekly
shopping and we decided to go for some ice blendeds to catch up on
things. It went along smoothly until I asked him about his job. At
the mere mention of it, he shifted uneasily and his eyes scanned our
surroundings. Finally, he leaned close and said in a hoarse whisper:
"I play games for a living." It had been a known fact since my high
school days that this particular friend loved playing games and often
his mind were on his games rather than the opposite sex. At one point
he had mentioned that his dream was to become a professional gamer,
and it looked like he had achieved his dream, except for one problem:
"It's not working out," he said dejectedly. "Everything's falling
apart."

01/27/2004 03:32 AMGeekbox:
Tribe tips. Interesting observations at
Geekbox on
ridiculously easy group-forming and the advantages of transparent
membership and free-for-all taxonomies. (see also this
previous post about Tribe.)
The
free-for-all creation of tribes is sometimes inefficient and
duplicitous, but it really doesn't matter when you have your friends'
interests to go by. Just like you can't devise a perfect taxonomy for
music, you can't devise a perfect taxonomy for social groups or
interests, especially when you're dealing with a lot of people who are
trying very hard to not be mainstream.
[Seb's Open
Research]
This goes back to the point about how trivial most people treat
these social networks. There are all sorts of ways you can see
this disrespect. Not only do all sorts of fake personas,
Fakesters, faux personalities appear, but some folks seem to delight
in attaining the most friends (like me!) for no reason at all - except
to do it.
I was ranked something like 4th or 5th in the overall Orkut race -
when it went down on Sunday. I'm trying hard to hold steady at
444 friends on Tribe. On Friendster I grew bored at around 100
friends.
I see social networking in the same way I think of multimedia or
the Internet - it's an inevitable state of technology - which everyone
will use on a daily basis in the future. What software ISN'T
about people?
Today's crude, stand alone social networks will soon be replaced by
the social networking FEATURE being built into magazines, portals,
blogging tools and storage lockers. Every brand and important
technical entity will have their own MyBlahBlahBlah.
It's a hybrid combination of tools, digital lifestyle aggregation
and social networking.
Not treating these social networks with respect really pisses off
danah boyd, but I kind of think it's pretty funny. I enjoy
piling up and combining friends from all over the technical,
multimedia, open source, digital artists, blogging and Burning Man
universes. All sorts of people have met each other through my
networks.
Though I'm no Joi Ito - but I play one in a Soap Opera.
danah thinks we should treat these relationships more
seriously. Or somehow believe that by calling someone a 'friend'
in an explicit social networking environment - actually means
something.
People are having fun, clicking on each other's face, leaving
testimonials, posting on boards and assoicating themselves with
clustered 'groups, tribes, communities, networks' (they go by all
sorts of names.) What's wrong with that?
If someone can pay for the servers and bandwidth - then god bless
them.
I'm kind of hoping that folks like Tucows and the Internet Archive can host FOAF based open source versions of these
sorts of social networks (such as our PeopleAggregator) and we'll all
inter-connect these networks together - because we all support
FOAF.
So you might as well get used to 'making friends' - 'cause you're
gonna be defining your relationship to other people and entities - for
the rest of your life. As Doc says.... all kinds of new opportunities open up.... based on the
participation of demand in the process of supply.
That is "once we get two way relationships going" - end-user
contributions and personal publishing will FAR exceed the current day
media's stranglehold. Web Services, personal publishing, social
networking, digital lifestyle aggregation and communication - will all
go hand in hand - in ALL of tomorrow's software.
They'll all be just features. And available in open source
form.

12/19/2004 03:46 PMWhat happens when a good developer goes bad and closes up shop?
Game.Ars has a look at what supposedly happened to an insider at
Interplay.
After several months, money arrived via a bank-to-bank

Unfortunately, that happens all too often.
In addition, Game.Ars looks at the phenomenon of banned games

of course, there's all the week's gaming news. Read on.

04/23/2004 04:09 AMGrant Us Some Gaming!
Grant Us Some Gaming!
06/05/2005 11:24 PMInspired by the successes of Santa
Monica PL and, of course, the Ann
Arbor District Library, MLS is collaborating with the Thomas Ford Memorial Library
(one of our members) to submit a LSTA grant to bring gaming to our
libraries. Aaron and I have
been talking through the idea since the current round of grants was
first announced, and now we’re moving on putting together the
pieces. We both believe strongly in gaming as a draw for t(w)eens in
libraries, and we both recognize the impact gaming is beginning to
have on our culture and society, which truly is only just beginning.
Plus, the introduction to gaming culture should help librarians better
understand patrons from this type of group and where they’re
coming from.
Our plan is to submit a grant to put together a gaming
“package,” much like the one Erin Helmrich and Eli
Neiburger are going to show off at our May 26 Tech Summit (just 3 seats left!), except
that ours will be a traveling road show. We want to get a number of
MLS libraries to commit to the idea of gaming tournaments using the
traveling road show. MLS will coordinate scheduling the equipment and
can house it when not in use, but participating
libraries would hold their own tournaments in their own buildings
for their own patrons. The winner from each library would then go on
to a championship tournament with bigger prizes at stake. The whole
thing would be ongoing, with the championship possibly being an annual
event. Imagine being crowned master chief of Chicago’s south and
west suburbs! (Not that we’ll be using Halo as one of the games,
but you get the idea
.)
Since we’re just starting to put together the details, we
have some questions we’d like to ask of those libraries that are
already doing gaming tournaments. Of course, we plan to corner Erin
and Eli when they’re here in two weeks, but for others,
we’d really appreciate your feedback. Our inclination is to get
[what will then be] new XBOX 360s for the coolness and current
factors, which means we’re dependent on the games initially
available for the system. We’re debating if we need to also get
a second, more established platform, and which games would be the
biggest hits with kids without setting off alarms for parents. (At
home, we’re pretty strict about what Brent can and can’t
play, so I’m very sensitive to this issue in a library
setting.)
I guess our big question is if you could dream big, what would you
dream? And if you’re at a MLS library, do you want to
participate in the grant? We’ll be discussing this in more
detail with MLS attendees after each session on the 26th, but feel
free to contact
me or Aaron with
questions or responses! And watch Aaron’s blog, because
he’ll be posting more on this topic.
Update: Here's Aaron's first
post about the grant, in which he explains the significance of the
XBOX 360.

"Video games are an $11 billion business and a fundamental
component of teenage life. Hosting video game tournaments at your
library builds community, demonstrates your library's relevance to a
different audience (young adults, teens, and especially males), and
allows libraries to bring content directly into users' hands.
Come to this exciting MLS Tech Summit to see firsthand how Ann
Arbor District Library Information Access Systems geeks worked with
the teen services librarians to bring video gaming tournaments to the
community. You'll learn all of the technical details as well
as how to replicate the program at your library-- whole hog or on the
cheap!--and take notes on arguments and justifications for your
director. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes
because you will get to experience this phenomenon
firsthand!
Presenters: From the Ann Arbor (MI)
District Library - Erin Helmrich, Teen Librarian, and Eli
Neiburger, Information Access & Systems Manager
Background: See their article at http://axi
s.aadl.org/cgi-bin/blosxom.cgi/2005/02/02/ for more about their
tournaments and OCLC's
webcast for more about gaming in the library in general!
This session is limited to 40 participants. Should this session
fill, please sign up for the wait list. If the demand is great enough,
we will open a repeat afternoon session."
I am soooooo psyched about this session that I'm considering
bringing Brent in for the day so that the participants can watch his
eyes bug out when he sees the setup and plays the games. ;-)
Note that this program is not limited to MLS libraries. Registration link.

Gaming Gmail Ads
Gaming Gmail Ads
05/06/2004 02:28 PMOh, those crazy unintended consequences. TheRegister is pointing out
that the contextual advertising aspect of Gmail may lead to
some
interesting business opportunities. For example, you could try to
buy up the keywords around your competitor (or, better yet, if you can
figure it out, their standard "signature" file in emails) and
guarantee that any emails they send out come complete with
advertisements for your company. Even more sneaky, they pick up on
Karl
Auerbach's suggestion that a company would process
outgoing
email to add to it certain keywords to guarantee certain
advertisements would show up within Gmail. This seems a bit
far-fetched, and I doubt it would be all that effective - either in
getting the right ads to show in Gmail or in being a worthwhile
endeavor for advertisers. I do think, however, that the issue of
competitors' ads showing up in email may upset people much more.
