08/19/2004 07:12 PM
Sony today announced the "QUALIA 005," in their WEGA series of
LCD TVs, which is the world's first television to use Light Emitting
Diodes (LEDs) as a backlight. BUT WHY? According to Sony, this 46"
television has the most realistic color reproduction of any set EVER.
I'd certainly hope so too, considering it will set you back more than
$10,000 USD.
Features on this new set don't stop there, however - Sony managed
to cram in their Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer (of PS2 fame)
for better image rendering, as well as their "DRC-MFv2"
standard-TV-to-HDTV upscaler we reported on just last week. Another
bizarro feature inserted in an attempt to justify the 10G pricetag is
usage of the "XMB" (Cross Media Bar) GUI, which is currently used on
the PSX. I complain about prices a lot, but who am I kidding? I'd get
one if I was stinking rich, which I certainly plan to be.

The
(extremely) high-end Qualia 007 Super Audio CD Player (first shown at
CES) is a designer's wet dream come true. Place a CD pretty much any
where in the loading area and three pistons raise it up in the air,
centering the disc as they go. The laser is held in a fork that slides
out and grabs the disc. Pretty show aside, the 007 outputs sound in
digital format through its 32-bit S-Master dual-channel to two
custom-built speakers made from Japanese Maple for a full, rich sound
that that can fill (or overpower) a party full of drinking tech
journalists. The system launches next month with a price tag of
$12,500.

Previously
available only with the Q017-MD1 Qualia 017 MiniDisc player, the Sony
MDR-EXQ1 earbuds will become the first product in the Qualia line to
be sold outside of Sony's exclusive retail stores. The $200
earplug-style phones sport a brass housing, ostensibly because it
improves response and the spread of low frequencies, or it could just
be that they look, as they say in Japan, "badass." Get all the ohms
and milliwatts and whatnot information from this translated press

New York Sony Qualia Store Opens
09/23/2004 11:08 AM
Sony's Qualia store finally opened today in Manhattan,
the first retail outlet on our shores of Sony's high-end luxury brand.
I had a chance to check out the store a few weeks ago and was, well, a
little let down. It's not entirely Qualia's fault though; who decided
the best place to stick a high-end retail presence was in the back
basement corner of an existing Sony store?

You know, this whole having
a social life thing is not conducive at all to cooking you kids your
gadget breakfast. Fortunately for me, Panasonic and Sony have provided
some low-hanging fruit this morning with the launch of several new
digital cameras, including a really nice looking CyberShot [pictured]
with a 7-megapixel sensor. And by "nice looking" I mean "pretty
cheap," as Sony plans to launch the DSC-P150 for less than $500. I was
almost going to buy a camera today, but now I may end up waiting a
bit.
Panasonic's 5 new Lumix models look decent, too, with 3.4- to
5-megapixel options and 12x optical zoom on the FZ model line.

Sony DCR-HC40 MiniDV Camcorder Review
06/21/2004 10:31 AM
PC Mag reviews the Sony
DCR-HC40 MiniDV camcorder, and despite some issues with the
touch-screen controls, find the most important stuff -- image quality,
battery life, and price -- to be very strong for a $700 camera. It has
"intelligent accessory shoes" that can power an optional light or
microphone, and it happens to have an internal lens cover, something I
find highly appealing in the smaller throw-and-go camera segment.
Still image cameras almost all have internal lens covers these days; I
don't know why we expect anything different from camcorders.

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,
Including Sony T3 (Rawr!)
08/30/2004 09:56 AM
Gott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like
two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various
manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no
exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized
beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and
Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less
than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar
4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was
ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two
that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a
7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.
The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me
all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If
they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be
my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and
I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the
day.

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AMHas anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell
Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does,
Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over
a month after Sony announced plans to
build
out retail stores more for advertising than for sales,
Samsung plans to
do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more
interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one
step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for
advertising that
they won't sell you anything at the store.
It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the
article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their
plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article
also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like
phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage
isn't enough to scare them off.

The first thing that comes to mind when seeing
Sony's DCR-DVD7E is that it looks rather like a Discman, but this is
of course only because it must make room for a DVD-R, DVD-RW, or
DVD+RW to use as recording media. The unit, announced yesterday in
Europe, has a 2.5-inch LCD viewfinder on the back, and despite perhaps
looking a bit unimpressive, the lens does a respectable 10x optical
zoom. No idea what it's going to cost when it hits European shelves in
May.

09/07/2004 10:40 AMSony Corp. will begin selling its first high-definition video
camcorder in Japan on Oct. 15, and worldwide by the end of the year,
the company said in an announcement Tuesday. While the camcorder is
compatible with Japan's HDV high-definition digital video format,
users cannot store video on Sony's Blu-ray Disc format. The HDR-FX1
camcorder is Sony's first step in promoting high definition video as
the standard format for home-use camcorders, but its price makes it
too expensive for most families initially, the company said.

CamCorderInfo has the first review I've seen of the
Sony DCR-PC350, the new pocket-sized camcorder with the 3.31-megapixel
sensor. Sadly, although it's a pretty decent review in general, they
don't talk too much about the still image quality, something I'm sure
many of us would like to know more about, since one of the major
selling points of the DCR-PC350 is its function as a convergence
device. Still, there is some good information in there, including talk
of a "Cinematic Effect" setting that shoots video progressively,
tweaks the color, and drops every fifth frame in an effort to emulate
the look of film. And it works, sort of, at least as an interesting
effect (although they say it ends up looking more like 8mm film than
fancy, Hollywood-quality stuff.)
