MTV to introduce download program 04/07/2005 10:40 AM
MTV Networks plans to start a music downloading service this year that will offer subscription or single purchases through MTV.com. MTV Networks Group President Van Toffler said at a press conference in New York on Wednesday that the service won't use the MTV name. He declined to comment on the name or start date. Separately, MTV.com will unveil a new site called MTV Overdrive on April 25 that will feature music videos, movie clips, segments from MTV News and excerpts from MTV shows such as "Punk'd." MTV Overdrive is a means for its parent company, New York-based Viacom, "to capture new money going into new media," Toffler said. Users will see 15-second commercials for products interspersed throughout the video clips without the option to skip commercials.

AT&T Wireless To Introduce The How Many
Bars Do You Have Man
04/23/2004 04:27 PM
Now that AT&T Wireless is trying to bounce back from all the troubles they've been having, they've decided to steal a page from competitor Verizon Wireless. While they promise that they've fixed a lot of the problems that caused them problems and have very publicly apologized, they're also starting up a marketing campaign that will try to get the phrase "How many bars do you have?" as famous as "Can you hear me now?" I can just imagine the thought process. AT&T Wireless execs standing in a bunch of mobile phone users listening to what they're saying, knowing they can't use "Can you hear me now?" Maybe it's just me, but "How many bars do you have?" just isn't that convincing.

Video Voyeurs Face Crack Down

Video Voyeurs Face Crack Down 09/22/2004 01:57 PM
Pornographers beware - new legislation coming into law in the US will soon make the practise of covertly taping people "for lascivious purposes" illegal. Described as "video voyeurism", the practise has become the "new frontier of stalking". After the bill has passed, doing so would lead to a fine of $100,000 and imprisonment of up to one year.

The miniaturization of cameras and the low cost of products have made it easy for people to do this covertly. Rep. James Sensenbrenner described the problem as "a huge privacy concern". The camera made notorious by many a internet ad, the X10, is one of many devices causing the problem, along side the growing spread of camera phones.

The bill would make illegal to "videotape or photograph the naked or underwear-covered private parts of a person without consent when the person has a reasonable expectation of privacy".

New Hampshire To Tax Instant Messaging,
Email And Chat Rooms
07/12/2004 12:14 PM
Brian writes in to point out that "New Hampshire's tax collecting agency w ants to apply a 7 percent tax on a variety of telephone and Internet services from chat rooms to voice mail." They also include web mail and instant messaging in the things that would be taxed. This is even more ridiculous than Florida's plans to tax your WiFi network. The New Hampshire "Department of Revenue Administration" tries to lamely justify this new tax, saying they're just updating old rules for new technologies, but can't seem to come up with a good justification for doing this... perhaps because there is no good justification for doing this.
