SCO hit by DoS attack

SCO hit by DoS attack 12/10/2003 06:35 PM
VIA NEWS RELEASE LINDON, Utah -- The SCO Group, Inc., owner of the UNIX operating system, today confirmed that on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003 at approximately 4:20 a.m. Mountain Time, it experienced a large-scale distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. The attack caused the company's Web site and corporate operational traffic to be unavailable during the morning hours including e-mail, the company intranet, and customer support operations. The company's site remains unavailable while this DDoS attack continues to take place. The company is working with its Internet Service Provider to restore www.sco.com to legitimate Internet users.

DoS Attack Nothing New

DoS Attack Nothing New 05/18/2004 01:14 PM
Some WLAN security experts say that the reaction to a type of denial of service (DoS) attack recently described by Queensland University researchers is severe: "This is new only in a small incremental sense," said Rich Mironov, vice president of marketing for AirMagnet. "This is one new flavor or variation of the DoS attack." The report from Australia has been widely described as a dramatic new security fault inherent in the 802.11b standard. Some reports have included recommendations to stop using 802.11b networks altogether. The attack appears to have no real effect on 802.11a or 802.11g-only networks which employ a different signal encoding method than 802.11b. But some say the attack isn't new at all. Richard Rushing, chief security officer for AirDefense, says this new report looks exactly like findings presented by University of San Diego researchers at a UseNix conference last August. The buzz around the recent report from Queensland just happens to be better publicized, he said. Neither Mironov nor Rushing expect the form of attacks to be particularly threatening. The attack can be performed with an off-the-shelf PC card but the card's firmware must be modified using a driver that may or may not become public. "It's probably going to come out, but it's not necessarily going to propagate," said Rushing. Even if it does get widely circulated, the attacks themselves will be limited to the APs in range of the altered PC card. "It's not like the whole network crashes. It's the one or two or three APs nearby that are crashing," Mironov said. AirMagnet's current product looks for 16 other distinct DoS attacks and will soon identify this type of attack. When its network sensors pick up on the attack, an alarm is sent to a network administrator. An IT manager can then use a handheld device to locate the source of the attack to shut it down. AirMagnet expects to be able to distribute an update that will identify this specific attack in about a week, Mironov said. Key to identifying such attacks are sensors that are separate from the APs, Rushing said. "If I'm using the AP to get my monitoring information I won't see anything. I'll just see that nothing is connecting to the AP," he said. But a separate sensor would see the signals sent from the hacker's device. Mironov says this new attack is not a reason to shy from...

Art Attack

Art Attack 06/09/2004 10:33 PM

On June 15, a federal grand jury will convene in upstate New York to consider possible bioterrorism charges against University at Buffalo art professor Steve Kurtz and the Critical Art Ensemble, an internationally-known hactivist collective. From the CAE Defense Fund Web site:

"Early morning of May 11, Steve Kurtz awoke to find his wife, Hope, dead of a cardiac arrest. Kurtz called 911. The police arrived and, after stumbling across test tubes and petri dishes Kurtz was using in a current artwork, called in the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Soon agents from the Task Force and FBI detained Kurtz, cordoned off the entire block around his house, and later impounded Kurtz's computers, manuscripts, books, equipment, and even his wife's body for further analysis. The Buffalo Health Department condemned the house as a health risk.

Only after the Commissioner of Public Health for New York State had tested samples from the home and announced there was no public safety threat was Kurtz able to return home and recover his wife's body. Yet the FBI would not release the impounded materials, which included artwork for an upcoming exhibition at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art."

This Washington Post article provides more background on the bizarre turn-of-events. Protests at the Court House in Buffalo and in other major cities are planned. Link

Roadless Act under attack. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman announced today the plan to lift a Clinton-era ban on building roads into wilderness areas on National Forest Service lands. Instead of keeping the ban at a federal level, the decision on wether or not to allow roads to be built would now be deffered to state governers.

I can't help but wonder, how is this in the public's interests at all? It is unreasonable to paint this as, "the biggest single giveaway to the timber industry in the history of the national forests", or does this really have value that the average American could benefit from?

A group calling themselves the Personal Technology Freedom Coalition is holding a press conference today to show their support for a repeal of a portion of The Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The current rules that the DMCA outline are quite forceful in stating that no one shall “sell or distribute any product that is primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing a technological measure.” While this is frustrating to those of us that wish to make legitimate back-ups of software, music and games, the DMCA is quite clear that this can not be done. Help may be on the way though with the up coming review of a bill referred to as The Digital Media Consumers’ Rights Act. While allowing circumventing of many of the rules outlined by the DMCA, it will not allow for any tolerance for piracy however.

Our new baby

« Jarkko holds our eagerly awaited new baby. :) An entire gallery filled with adorable Saint Bernard puppies. »

We took a trip to southern Sweden this weekend to visit the litter of puppies we liked and to pick one along with the usual things you look at when selecting a breeder. The breeders, Lasse and Sussi, asked us to stay at their house and were really terrific people. As soon as we saw those 9 adorable little furry faces looking up at us any doubt we might have had disappeared. Of course, 9 puppies who are 7 weeks old and who are just getting their teeth in along with the teething that goes with them are dangerous creatures to everything within range of their mouths. :) We spent a few hours getting to know the furry piraa and decided on the puppy we liked originally from the pictures. We haven't picked a name for him yet, we'll just have to see what comes to us as a fitting name.

We have to wait until the first week of January to bring him home because of the EU regulations, in spite of Sweden being a rabies-free country, requiring that the puppy have a rabies vaccination before entering Finland. So, we must wait 5 long weeks until we can bring him home so he can fill the house with hair, drool, chew toys and all those familiar St. Bernard sounds that we miss so much. :) Happiness is a warm, fuzzy puppy.

Currently one of the most popular news items at Yahoo! News is Caterpillar Population Explodes in Mass. As a current resident of Mass., I can testify to the disgusting omnipresence of caterpillars. All around my house there are zillions of tent caterpillars. When I first arrived on island in mid-May, they were just exiting their tents. Now they are in all the plants, climbing up the sides of the house, and marching across the deck. They are big, furry, gross, and filled with juicy guts that explode when you step on them. My mom tried to squish one last weekend and it blew up all over her foot. Ick.

Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom
03/22/2005 04:59 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Tian says: "On March 7th, I took photos of a tow truck driver that damages a vehicle then tries to get away in Phoenix.

Sunday night (March 20th), Phoenix news channel 15 used a bait car and discovered that local tow truck company(s) would actually push cars into tow-away zone first, then held the cars as "hostages" for ransom."

I just watched it. The TV crew set up a white SUV as a bait car, and parked it legally. Time and time again, tow trucks would push the car into a red zone, snap a photo, and tow it away. Of course, when the TV crew showed the owner of the tow truck company how his drivers had pushed the car into the red lane, the owner denied responsibility. "I didn't push it," he said.

Arizona lawmakers have been half-heartedly writing legislation to stop this (isn't it illegal to do this already) but the tow truck has so far been able to convince them not to ruin the good thing they've got going. Link to RealMedia file. The segment starts about 20:15 into the broadcast.

Intel Delivers Breakthrough PC
Technologies To Enhance Digital Home and
Office Experiences
06/25/2004 08:27 PM
“Improved Audio, Video and Graphics Enable Broader Set of PC Uses SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 21, 2004 - In one of the most significant PC platform changes in a decade, Intel Corporation today announced products that usher in a range of audio, video and other capabilities previously found only on specialty PCs. In addition to making the PC experience more entertaining and productive, these technologies pave the way for such emerging capabilities as High Definition (HD) video, 7.1 surround sound and robust file protection for office and home users. These technologies are helping create a new kind of PC, an all-in-one “hi-fi” device with high-definition video, high-fidelity sound and wireless connectivity, according to Louis Burns, vice president and general manager, Intel Desktop Platforms Group.”Just as an afterthought, that press release reminds me of what I dislike intensely about politicians- glittering generalities. “New technologies” and “digital revolution”. Hogwash! In a year we’ll look back and decide that the technology was just another evolutionery step in CPU design and that all those marvelous toys are just so much hype, since about 1% of it ever happened. Oh, the future is certainly bright enough, but look at the realities of it all: Intel has to accept AMD’s 64-bit chip code as the gold standard, their new chips are hobbled and flawed, and they’re pinning their hopes on dual-core chips that aren’t in fab yet, because they weren’t supposed to be produced until 2006. It’s pretty clear that Intel, for whatever reason, made a serious tactical error when it came to 64-bit desktop chips and now they’re trying ever so hard to catch up. I’ve never cared that much for Intel, it’s true. I simply think that they produce good chip concepts, but the execution is a little lame and the prices are too high by 40%. At least they make good motherboards (usually). And in all this time, they haven’t figured out their errors. Maybe they can come up with an entirely new bell or whistle to regain the lead, but I don’t know what it could be… Maybe direct I/O ports on the CPU? Who knows.I do know one thing- “an all-in-one “hi-fi” device with high-definition video, high-fidelity sound and wireless connectivity” doesn’t hold the promise of anything startlingly new and innovative, to me. I think they call it a ‘Home Theatre’ package.
