AP - Worried they're running out of time to keep drug cheaters out of the Athens Games, U.S. Olympic officials want some help from federal authorities. And they aren't just going after athletes who have failed drug tests. Instead, they hope to use a clause in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's rules to bar athletes who acknowledge the use of steroids and other banned substances, including in grand jury testimony.

Italy Jamming Mobile Phone Cheaters

Italy Jamming Mobile Phone Cheaters 06/18/2004 12:59 PM
The FCC has made it clear that they don't want people jamming mobile phone signals in the US (though, the government is exempt from those rules). The FCC argues that jamming mobile phone signals is theft of airwaves -- but, more importantly, the dangers of someone missing an important call outweigh any benefit of silence. Still, many other countries don't see it that way, and mobile phone jamming systems are increasingly common in places like theaters (and, even hotels). Now, a school in Italy has decided that mobile phone based cheating is such a big problem that they're installing phone jammers to stamp out the possibility. Seems like a mighty big stick to pull out to stop some cheating kids. Honestly, I'm still a big confused how most students cheat with mobile phones. While phones are clearly getting smaller and smaller, and kids are quite good at punching in text messages without looking, they're still fairly large objects compared to traditional cheat sheets.

All Marketers Are Liars 04/14/2005 03:31 PM

Seth Godin sent me a a copy of his new book, All Marketers Are Liars. It's excellent. As usual, it's very provocative and typical Seth Godin. In a way, it's like Cluetrain Manifesto written by someone who speak Madison Avenuese. He writes about how people buy products because of stories and how these stories fit into their world view. The products and people behind the stories have to be authentic, but people pay for these stories. These stories sell the products, not facts about the products. Most of these stories are not completely true. It reminds me of my Moleskine notebook which has a story that I know isn't really true, but I love the story. My Macintosh is also the same. I know Apple is suing a blogger and has DRM all over iTunes, but for some reason, I'm still believe the story that they're on my side. (For now.) He also writes about the end of the advertising "message" and that you can't control the story. You don't know where your customer will touch your product/company and get their first impression. Every part of your company has to be authentic and resonate with the story.

The book reminds me of Don't Think of an Elephants by George Lakoff which is about how the Republican Party is successful at telling their story because it fits the frame / world view of their voters.

Interestingly, Seth is telling a pretty strong story that I believe doesn't fit the world view of many of the marketers he is talking to. I hope they believe his story. ;-)

He has a blog about the book called Liar's Blog for the book.

Chinese Cheaters Charged With Stealing

Chinese Cheaters Charged With Stealing
State Secrets
06/15/2004 01:05 PM
Over in China a group of students are being charged with theft of state secrets for stealing exam questions for the national college entrance exam. The scam sounds like a bad movie plot, and it's surprising that they got as far as they did with it. A few students went in to take the exam, and then left with the questions (it's unclear how they left and how they took the questions with them). They gave the questions to other students sitting outside who quickly tried to answer the questions, and then send them, via mobile phone text messages, to other students still taking the exam. Students could buy a complete set of answers for about $120 - though, the article quotes one parent complaining that not all the answers were accurate. Next thing you know, they'll start suing.

Video Phones Won't Catch On Because
They'll Uncover Liars
01/22/2004 03:07 AM
Something of an odd prediction, suggesting that 3G video phones will never catch on because it will make it more difficult to lie about your location. I hadn't realized that so many people used their mobile phones as a way of lying about where they were. I would guess that there are plenty of other reasons why video phones might not catch on (perhaps, for the same reason that landline based video phones have never really caught on - people often feel uncomfortable knowing someone is watching them without being able to see them directly). I also wonder how many make their buying decisions based on their ability to use the technology to lie to people.

British Academy treats film judges as

British Academy treats film judges as
crooks
08/31/2004 10:09 AM
Cory Doctorow: The British Academy of Film and Television (BAFTA) is treating all judges as criminals this awards season. They are supplying special lockware DVD players that can play back the "secure" DVDs that the Academy is distributing. My guess is that anyone elected to judge a film award has a highly tuned, specialised home-theatre setup and that this will represent a serious goddamned pain in the ass for them:
"We are very pleased to be working with Cinea to give our members the opportunity to receive secure screeners. The British Academy takes the threat of piracy very seriously, and we welcome any solution that can reduce the risk of unauthorized copying." said David Parfitt, Chair of BAFTA's Film Committee.

Variety is reporting that it will cost studios US$25,000 (€20,650) per film, plus a license fee to Cinea, to secure the screener disks with the S-VIEW system. Cinea will pay for the players and encoding themselves, and is in discussion with studios for further uses of the S-VIEW technology to secure the post-production process for film makers. It can be used for the secure distribution of dailies and other works in progress, ensuring that digital copies don't end up being leaked onto the internet. Something that was almost impossible with 35 or 70mm film.

Each sv300 player is individually addressable, allowing distributors to decide exactly who views their content, from large groups of thousands to a single individual.

Nice: if you can't sell DRM to users, you can convince paranoid studio execs to shell out tens of thousands of dollars to buy it and shove it down cinephiles' throats. Link (Thanks, Simon!)

The Wi-Fi Alliance announced today the first set of companies whose products have received WPA2 certification: They include products from Atheros, Broadcom, Cisco, Instant802 Networks, Intel, and Realtek. WPA2 is based on 802.11i and uses Advanced Encryption Standard instead of TKIP. Broadcom and Atheros are both touting their hardware-based solutions. Broadcom says that its existing products have shipped with the chip-based AES engine which means that simple software downloads can upgrade products to comply with WPA2. Both Atheros and Broadcom products will be used by the Wi-Fi Alliance in certifying other WPA2 products....
