China Blocks Wikipedia

China Blocks Wikipedia 06/14/2004 11:50 AM
The Chinese internet censors are at it again. While past articles looking at China's often complet ely arbitrary internet censorship policies, it looks like the Chinese government is fed up with the idea that politically neutral content might be available online. They've now start blocking Wikipedia, the popular community-built online encyclopedia that is careful to enforce a policy that entries remain politically neutral. In fact, prior to this, the article claims that the Chinese Wikipedia site was used as an example of internet openness in China. Not any more.

From Lead Blocks to Webl0gs

From Lead Blocks to Webl0gs 12/09/2003 03:50 PM
The organizers of Spanish tech conference Artfutura asked me to write a primer on the history of weblogs for a publication distributed at the event. The essay is now online, here's a snip.
When I was a child, my father hauled an abandoned antique printing press into our house one afternoon. He was an artist and writer who had a habit of falling in love with discarded tools, the same way I became routinely obsessed with broken dogs and fallen birds. But this thing weighed over a ton. He'd become enamored with the way words from the press felt in his hands, divided into chunks of lead characters. Sentences formed like spines strung from vertebrae. I remember exactly how the blocks of type felt when he placed them in my small hands -- they were palm-sized then, but cold; sharp enough along the corners to puncture skin. Heavier than the wooden alphabet building-blocks I played with upstairs.

I remember the acrid smell of black ink, and the slapping sounds of my father spreading each blob into a thin film that coated wide plates of assembled text. Gears made metallic groans when he heaved his giant body into the wheel that set the press into motion, a wheel as tall as he was, a wheel that smashed wet steel plates into paper to form printed words.

The press was an elderly oddity: a fat, shut-in houseguest who consumed two rooms, accompanied by floor-to-ceiling cabinets of paper and type trays. Homes didn't have PCs in 1974, but there were many more efficient ways to speak to the world. My father wrote on a typewriter, and words were published in books, newspapers, and magazines. But words that came out of this press had a scent. A personality you could feel with your fingers. Whatever my father's words were, when they were printed this way they had history, as if he had squeezed them through a time machine on their way to the sheets of vellum extra-bright white.

The Building Blocks of Culture

The Building Blocks of Culture 07/08/2004 08:38 PM

As a tie-in to Spider-Man 2, Spite Your Face created a short movie of Spidey battling Doc Ock, done entirely with Legos. It's a cracking good little romp, and it made me think of some of the other great Lego remixes I've seen, such as 2001: A Lego Odyssey and Monty Python Lego. Legos have become one of the great physical media for animation, from Michel Gonrdy's innovative music video for the White Stripes' "Fell in Love with a Girl" to entire communities of Lego animators.

Why is that? Perhaps because Lego is the original remix toy. A Lego set isn't some finished plaything: it comes in pieces, and you get to build it yourself. And then, once you've built the model, you can unbuild it and put it back together in your own way. You can make mash-ups in which Harry Potter Lego characters meet Star Wars Lego characters at a car wash.

Think of Creative Commons as Lego for culture, helping the building blocks of creativity snap together in neat new ways.

FCC Blocks Spam on Wireless Devices

FCC Blocks Spam on Wireless Devices 08/05/2004 02:31 PM
The FCC wants to stop spam from reaching your PDA and/or cell phone. It's a step in the right direction and much appreciated, but may not protect cell phones and PDAs from forwarded spam emails.

The Federal Communications Commission yesterday moved to prevent cell phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) from becoming the next major frontier for e-mail spam.

The agency issued rules requiring marketers to have explicit permission from wireless-device users before they can be sent any commercial e-mail. And it urged the industry to develop technologies to prevent spam from overwhelming wireless devices the way it has swamped computer messaging.

"By prohibiting all commercial messages to wireless phones and PDAs absent affirmative consent from the consumer, Americans can now use their wireless devices freely, without being bothered by unwanted and annoying messages," FCC Chairman Michael K. Powell said in a prepared statement.

The rule covers a rapidly expanding array of Web-based e-mail services offered by wireless providers that enable customers to send and read messages via their phones or PDAs.

Well things didn't go as I'd hoped for the Sox opener (Pedro and the boys lost 7-2 against Baltimore), but at least the UConn women won against Minnesota and are on their way to the NCAA finals against Tennessee tomorrow night. Go Huskies! Watching the women play last night was amazing, and the improvement in the women's game even in the past five years is really something. Great ball movement, fakes, no-look passes -- it's a pleasure to watch.

England Libraries May All Get Wi-Fi 12/04/2003 01:07 PM
The majority of libraries in England already have broadband access but now the government is working on adding Wi-Fi: Most of the libraries in King County, outside of Seattle, have Wi-Fi. It's a great, low-cost way for libraries to offer Internet access without having to provide computers for everyone. My library always has a line of people waiting to get on its computers so perhaps with Wi-Fi some people could come in with their own computers to use the Internet. But I wonder how many of the people I see waiting in line there actually have laptops that they could bring with them instead....
