The whole picture 05/11/2004 04:34 PM
I mostly avoided the hearing today, but tuned in to C-SPAN's video stream just long enough to catch this brief segment in which Senator James Inhope argues that "if pictures are authorized to be disseminated among the public, then for every picture of abuse or alleged abuse of prisoners, we [should] have pictures of mass graves, pictures of children being executed, pictures of the four Americans in Baghdad who were burned and mutilated." He concludes: "Let's get the whole picture." ...

Google Gets the Picture

Google Gets the Picture 07/16/2004 01:20 PM
“Google’s busy these days as the company pursues its IPO, fights mounting competition with Yahoo and Microsoft in the search arena and rolls out new features like Browse By Name. However, Google still found time to acquire digital photo management company Picasa to improve photo publishing on Google’s Blogger service (also a recent acquisition from Pyra Labs).”Read more…Google certainly isn’t wasting any time while readying for their IPO. They now have a complete chain from their Blogger.com blog site to the Hello! software that allows users to post photo blogs to the Picasa software that lets the users organize and manage their photo collections. On the interesting question side is this: Every previous link in the chain is free- will Picasa now become free as well? I think that this may or may not happen. It would ‘annoy’ current users who have had to pay to register the application and I don’t suppose they want to tick off their customer base unless they offer some significant compensation- shall we say a share or two of Google stock?Well, that’s just an idle thought, but one that I suspect would pacify even the most annoyed…

1GB xD-Picture Card

1GB xD-Picture Card 09/27/2004 09:04 AM

1gb_xdcard.jpg imageOlympus and Fujifilm have announced a 1GB version of their proprietary xD-Picture flash memory card format. As you can see from this probably-way-too-big-considering picture, it's really not that interesting, but it is now larger. That's probably the main thing I dislike about xD, actually; you have to wait on Fujifilm and Olympus to come out with the newer sizes, whereas with CompactFlash or whatever there are dozens of companies competing to launch larger cards.

A picture of lemons... 02/17/2004 07:50 PM

This picture - taken shortly before I flew back to London - shows lemons growing by the garage around the back of Kerry's house. They were left uncommented upon - no big deal - they grow all over the place, all over the world. But if you're from less sunny climes, there's still something miraculous about lemons just growing untended. As if it were perfectly normal! With no one saying, "Ooh! Lemons!" or taking any special interest whatsoever. As I took a photo of them, Kerry's next door neighbour cycled around the corner and gave me a very peculiar look as if to say, "Why's that guy taking pictures of lemons? That's so lame."

OK - so I'm sitting here in paris - with an extra moment - so I dipped my toe back into the blgosphere long enough to catch Jay Dedman's rap on "How to make life easier explained very clearly".

I dig what he's saying and pointing to - but I can't help but wonder how this post would be different if Jay used a combination of thumbnails grabbed from video clips - linking to those video clips - to talk about enclosures, subscribing to and creating video blogs.

Shouldn't we be eating our own digfood?

Shouldn't a video blogger use video blogging to describe video blogging?

It's one thing I haven't seen done yet - which is a consistent combination of thumbnail - which links to a clip - used in blogging gesture.

If so - I bet a bunch more people would click on thsoe video blog links.

So here's Jay's post.....

There's so much on the web...that knwoing how to look at what you want is difficult.

Especially when video starts popping up everywhere.

So you start trusting certain places to keep track of the good stuff for you.

You do this by signing up, for free, with a subscrition service like Bloglines or Feedster.

Almost every blog and many websites have an RSS feed that you subscribe to.

You just enter the URL in your subscription service and wait.

New posts will show up...all in one place.

HERE is a simple explanation of RSS.

But we're taking this idea step further...how will video be read by the RSS reader?

When video starts popping up everywhere, it'd be cool to get new videos just pop up on my computer as they're posted.

This happens with "enclosures".

I know...I know...I'm also learning how all this works too....

but Dave Winer explains the concept beautifully here.

Enclosures in RSS feeds made easy

> What if, in the middle of the night, while I'm not using my computer, it

> downloads huge video and audio stuff to my local hard drive. Then

> when I arrive in the morning there are fresh bits, news clips, a song

> of the day, whatever, provided by all kinds of content providers, from

> big TV networks like CNN and MSNBC, to a Dutch school where kids

> are taking a film class using inexpensive video recorders and iMacs.

And HERE is also a good explanation.

What is needed now is this "RSS aggregator" that downloads your audio/videos feeds overnight.

This way you could just wake up and hit "play" on your TV and it'll all come to you.

as far as I know no one has made one yet.

I hear rumors....

For those that read megnut.com through a news reader, you may be missing my photos from Paris that I've been posting to the site via Flickr. If you want to follow along on my adventures, you can check out my Flickr photo set, April in Paris 2005. So far there aren't a lot of photos, but as I wander the streets, I'll take more. They're all from my phone, so the quality isn't great. As I get (hopefully) better photos from my digital camera, I'll post those as well.

xbox2_aprsm.jpgI've been told this image has leaked some time before, but I haven't seen it, so here you go: possibly an image of the Xbox 2/Xbox 360/Xenon/Xhatever. It does seem to fit all previous reports about the console's look, including color, size, and the weird handle things, but it's also not very 'set-top' looking, so who knows. Anyway, you're looking at the relevant part of the picture now, but you can take a glimpse of the lenz fl4rez original by clicking on the hyperlink.

If you've seen the Xbox 2 in person, feel free to confirm or deny the validity of this image. (Thanks, Richard!)

How to recover deleted digital photo
files from a flash card

How to recover deleted digital photo
files from a flash card
10/29/2003 01:16 AM
Recently, due to a combination of very poor user interface, and momentary insanity, while meaning to delete one picture on an almost full flash (SmartMedia) card, I recently deleted all the digital picture files on the card. Once I discovered my mistake, I compounded it by continuing to take photos, assuming that the ones I had deleted were irrecoverable and weren't important anyway. Later that day I was informed in no uncertain terms that the pictures I had deleted were important, and that I should make all efforts possible to recover them. So later that night I sat up with Google and downloaded and tried a number of file recovery programs. A lot of the programs I tried were totally useless. File Scavenger V2, File Recover, Digital Picture Recovery, PC Inspector File Smart Recovery couldn't find any of the deleted files. PC Inspector File Recovery crashed when I ran it. Plus, the people who make the PC Inspector programs started spamming me about their products. I found one that looked promising, PhotoRescue, that showed me thumbnails of the missing photos, and promised that if I bought the program it could recover the full files, or my money back. That seemed reasonable enough and I was prepared to buy it for $29 if none of the others worked. However, the clear winner at photo file recovery was a program called Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery. I downloaded the program, checked it for viruses, ran it, and it recovered my files and put them on my hard disk. It has an exceedingly simple user interface. Somewhat disconcertingly for my geeky soul, there are no options to configure or choices to make. I just started the program, told it where to save the images it recovered, pointed it at the card, and it did its stuff. In my case, it worked flawlessly and recovered 155 images, including 22 files that I had deleted and that other programs said didn't exist. It made someone in my family very happy. Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery is the best program that I have found for recovering photos files deleted from flash cards. As a bonus, it is freeware, released by a Russian programmer as a way of promoting his corporate data recovery software. I hope he succeeds. Very Highly Recommended. Summary: Program: Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery Rating: Very Highly recommended Cost: Free Version reviewed: 1.0...
