Philadelphia to Get Citywide Wi-Fi

Philadelphia to Get Citywide Wi-Fi 09/01/2004 05:27 PM
The city of Philadelphia plans to spend $10 million to blanket the city in Wi-Fi: The network will either be free or available for a cost lower than commercial providers. It's unclear if such municipal networks will succeed in the future. 3 Rivers Connect built a free, public network in Pittsburgh in 2002 but the network is no longer operating. That network failed for a number of reasons, said George Heinitsh, chief technology officer for 3 Rivers Connect. "The biggest was that we ran into a lot of competition from providers offering service for free," he said. Doug Luce, founder and president of Telerama, an operator of for-fee hotspots in Pittsburgh, cited some other reasons for 3 Rivers' failure. He said that the mesh technology used by 3 Rivers may not have been very reliable. "Part of it also was they had a great signal in the middle of the street but not so great in storefronts," he said. He said that operators that try to cover whole cities might have such coverage issues. Luce also wondered about municipal networks that may be built primarily for use by law enforcement agencies. "If the police use it, they're likely to cater to those people and individual users are relegated to second class citizenship," he said. Still, it's clear that some municipal networks work. The Associated Press story cites Cleveland, which has 4,000 access points in one area of town. The chief information officer of Case Western Reserve University, which is running the project, said that at 2 in the afternoon on a Tuesday, 1,016 people were logged onto the network. The network is free to use. But cities that use tax dollars to build networks, ought to have a clear plan for marketing and using the network because even commercial ventures are having trouble figuring out the best business model for operating a Wi-Fi network. Luce says of the Philadelphia network: "This is an expensive experiment."...

Hartford To Build Free Citywide Network?

Hartford To Build Free Citywide Network? 03/24/2005 11:43 AM
Hartford's mayor promised free Wi-Fi access to residents citywide in his state of the city address: The Hartford Advocate looks into this network's feasibility. The mayor proposes to not just provide a free network, but also to give computers to less-advantaged local residents. Hartford has had a problem for decades and decades with "rich flight": it may be divided across racial lines, but anyone with any money moved across city lines. The county structure in Connecticut is very weak providing no shield to a big city with big problems. (My wife grew up in West Hartford; I spent five years in New Haven. It's pretty clear that wealthy suburbs can suck a city dry in a way that's not quite the same in other parts of the country.) Comcast played its hand pretty broadly when the Advocate reported asked for comment. Declining, the spokesperson suggested an analyst at The Heartland Institute, a group I've written about extensively on this site which doesn't disclose funding and released a report rife with direct ties to Verizon and Issue Dynamics, an incumbent telecom and cable PR and lobbying firm. The work is still in the planning stages, but with only a third of Hartford residents hooked up to the Internet--and 83 percent of the poorest family not surprisingly having no computer--the city sees this as a critical gap they want to close....

Dam now see - if there isn't a better example of the difference between product folks and research folks - their list of deployments is a list of .ppts (PowerPoint slides.)

Call me crazy - but to me - a list of deployements would be (heaven forbid) a list of sites of deployed code - working - for humans to play and learn from.

Is there a disconnect here?

Automating deployment with Subversion

Automating deployment with Subversion 04/07/2005 12:02 AM

Any developer knows that deployment is often a highly-manual process. In this edition of Linux.Ars, the crew looks at a tool — Subversion — that can make deployment from a development to production environment nearly painless.

The process is fairly painless. On the development server, I check out my website from Subversion. This, particularly when adding an existing project to Subversion, allows me to make sure that i have a complete working copy under version control. Next, I add a post-commit script on my Subversion server.

There's more, but you'll have to read on to get the goods on Subversion. In addition, we've got Tools, Tips, and Tweaks covering Synergy, an app that allows you to control multiple machines using a single keyboard and mouse, and even share a clipboard. There's also other tidbits from the week's Linux news and of course, the Cool App of the Week. Read on.

Near Real-Time Content Deployment 06/11/2004 10:14 PM

I just got finished watching Ronald Reagan's funeral. It was very, very touching. I was intrigued by all the pagentry of it — this is the first presidential funeral in 31 years, and the formality and choreography of the thing is just amazing.

Anyway, at the end, Nancy was sitting near the casket and she got up to say her final goodbye. She broke down in tears over the casket, and all her children came to comfort her. The noise of the camera shutters was just defeaning by this point — they were going off like machine guns.

Immediately after Nancy and the Reagan children left the podium, I shut off the TV and came down here to my office to check my email. I get to my mail through Mozilla, and CNN.com is my home page.

I was amazed to see the picture on the lead story was the exact same image of Nancy and the children that I saw on live TV not 90 seconds before. The mechanics of content deployment that fast on that big of a stage must have been something to behold.

Fiber to the home deployment schedule

Fiber to the home deployment schedule 01/07/2004 05:23 PM
Reuters: "Verizon said Monday that its initial [fiber] deployment plans involve about 1 million homes next year, with the pace potentially doubling in 2005."

So let's see.  Verizon has 30 million residential customers.  If they pass 1 million homes with fiber in 2004 and double that to 2 million per year in 2005, they'll light everyone up by 2020.  Assuming they actually deploy this time, unlike prior telco fiber promises.

Tropos Found Weighs in on Dirty Mesh
Secrets
07/09/2004 08:12 PM
The founder and chief architect of mesh networking firm Tropos adds his two cents to the "ugly truths" about mesh networking thread: Narasimha Chari has added his comments that clarify many of the problems with mesh networking that Francis daCosta raised at Daily Wireless several days ago. I linked to daCosta's original post and posted and linked to two replies on the topic already in this archived item. Chari says that daCosta has his primary calculation wrong: instead of a bandwidth reduction in a single-radio mesh system where n is the number of hops of (1/2)^n, it's 1/n. This calculation results in an enormously higher throughput than daCosta (click slide from Nitin Vaidya that Chari references at upper right for the dropoff by hops in throughput). Chari makes a number of additional useful points on this topic that are worth considering. Tropos has deployed through its integrator and resellers the largest number of mesh points in commercial use in the U.S., and potentially worldwide, that I'm aware of. If they don't know what they're talking about, then a lot of networks are operating by hypnosis instead of science....

Do Mesh Networks Scale? Two Views

Do Mesh Networks Scale? Two Views 07/06/2004 03:22 PM
The head of a mesh company argues mesh networks don't scale -- and one of the folks behind an open-source mesh software project examines the argument: MeshDynamics sells a multiple-radio solution for mesh networking, and the head of the firm wrote a brief article explaining why single-radio mesh networks can't work beyond a very small deployment. I asked Sascha Meinrath of the CUWiN project for his feedback on Francis daCosta's comments. Sascha writes: While I do think that Francis daCosta brings up some potential pitfalls to wireless mesh networks, the doomsday picture he presents is based on a flawed understanding of how mesh networking topographies work. I'll explain below: deCosta wrote: 1- Radio is a shared medium and forces everyone to stay silent while one person holds the stage. Wired networks, on the other hand, can and do hold multiple simultaneous conversations. 2- In a single radio ad hoc mesh network, the best you can do is (1/2)^^n at each hop. So in a multi hop mesh network, the Max available bandwidth available to you degrades at the rate of 1/2, 1/4, 1/8. By the time you are 4 hops away the max you can get is 1/16 of the total available bandwidth. This problem exists only when all tranceivers within a mesh topography "see" each other. And herein is the flaw in the argument. Within a mesh network Request To Sends (RTSs) do silence nodes within range; however this degradation moves in waves--so if part of a mesh consisted of 7 nodes (of which G is connected to the Internet): A-----------------> ------B-----------------> ------------C-----------------> | Internet Connection Here's what would happen. A would pass a packet to B; when B passed a packet to C, A couldn't talk--thus the 1/2 reduction in throughput; when C passed it to D, the same problem would occur for both A & B (thus a 1/4 throughput); likewise for D to E (because D would silence A, B, & C), thus a 1/8th throughput. However, when E passes a packet to F, A is unaffected, when F passes a packet to G, both A & B are unaffected. Thus, in this solution, throughput would theoretically max out at 1/8th (which is probably still much more throughput than the average Internet connection--where the usual bottleneck resides). What this really points to is the need for power control in radios (which is something that CUWiN wants...

In addition, the Opera House donated an AP to the town of Los Gatos to provide Internet access to the town plaza located across the street. Firetide caters to challenging deployments that are difficult to wire because Firetide uses 802.11 radios for backhaul. The release doesn't seem to be posted yet but should be here at some point. Strix is another vendor that uses wireless for backhaul. These vendors should be attractive to the cases where wiring is really difficult, like old buildings on college campuses or downtown....

Meshcube: Open Source Mesh Network Nodes

Meshcube: Open Source Mesh Network Nodes 06/28/2004 09:55 AM

meshcube_klar_freigestellt.jpg imageI must presume, when looking at the prices for the 'Meshcube,' that "199,90 EUR" really means about €200, not €20,000, because as cool as a tiny, mesh network computer is, I don't think there's any way I'd pay 20 large for one. Mesh networks are like generic WiFi networks, except that as you continue to add nodes -- like the little Meshcubes, for instance -- the network can expand out, without many of the limitations of traditional wireless networks with repeaters. There are other differences, too, but for now we can just enjoy a cute bug computer with no moving parts, a 400MHz MIPS processor, and two WiFi interfaces all crammed into a 7 x 5 x 7cm cube.

FireTide, BelAir, Tropos, Strix, and MeshNetworking are a few companies already delivering mesh products. The formation of a study group is just the first step in determining whether a standard is even necessary, so the formation of an actual task group that hammers out a standard is still in the distance....

Titanium Mesh Titties 07/01/2004 10:48 AM

pic-rei-12.jpg imageWhile metallic pleasure bots are high, high up on the lists of gadgets we'd like to see in the near future, we're not so sure that implanting titanium mesh under the breasts of women is the way to get the party started. Nein, der boobenkreiger ist gut, says Dr. Ziya Saylan, a German doctor who has developed the technique that over two dozen women have already tried. The idea is that the titanium will hold up the huge breast implants, preventing the sagging that many older women are getting implants to correct in the first place. If anyone has a picture of the implants, we'd love to see them (outside of the breasts, if you please).

Leaders from Intel and Cisco are trying to start up an effort to standardize 802.11 mesh networking : This is a great idea, but one that not surprisingly isn't supported by current developers of mesh networks. Those companies, including Strix, Firetide, and BelAir argue such an effort would be too difficult. They might prefer not to have standards so that customers must buy entire networks from one vendor. Intel apparently is working on a mesh standard that could span 802.11 and ultrawideband networks. That sounds like quite a challenge....
