Little-known Chinese software maker Evermore Software next month plans to step up its challenge to Microsoft's Office dominance with the release of its Evermore Integrated Office 2004. The Wuxi City, China, company plans to launch the product at the Demo conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, next month. Evermore Integrated Office (EIOffice) combines the components of traditional productivity suites into one application. Users launch EIOffice, not a word processor, then a spreadsheet application, then a presentation tool. Documents are stored in a single file format and the application, written in Java, runs on any operating systems that supports Java, including Windows and Linux, according to Evermore.

Challenge to Stowe

Challenge to Stowe 02/05/2005 09:12 PM

challenge.jpgStowe Boyd and I are going to do some debate somewhere - hopefully using Marc Eisenstadt's FlashMeeting technology.

BTW as a quick aside - I just found out that Macromedia charges $7,000 for 2,500 simultaneous users of FlashCom - the server technology behind FlashMeeting. If any coolio open source gal or guy is listening - I'd DIE to get an open source version of FlashCom. I promise i'll hussle the hell out of it - for you.

Anyway - back to Stowe.

Stowe seems to grok the absurdness of talking about talking - but what will he say when our Marqui program starts conversations and memes around actual subjects like "How Marqui saved me money" or "a Marqui a day - keeps my IT dept. at bay".

I can't wait to debate Stowe. I'm gonna pull out all my techniques at public performance, diaphragm support and snide combacks. All the techniques John Kerry had none of. Ask somebody about the debate Dave Winer and I did at a Stewart Alsop Agenda conference back in 1988.

:-)

One thing Stowe is right about - I was iritated with Marqui. And they didn't fire me!

And Stowe is all wigged out that Marqui would want to sponsor our debate. DUDE - haven't you gotten the point yet?

ARE YOU SPELLING MARQUI's name right?

Good - then case solved.

Are you an Internet security expert at heart or by profession? Ever thought of trying your skill at a professionally set up server? If you are ready, enter.

The Linux Server Break-in challenge. You will have a server available on the Internet 96 hours without interruption starting from 9 March 2005 2 AM IST. However, the server's life on the Net is in your hands.

This server won't be protected by firewall. There won't be any fake demons or honeypots as well. It will be running all the services normally found in a regular Linux distribution and more.

Microsoft to challenge EU penalty

Microsoft to challenge EU penalty 06/07/2004 01:46 PM
Microsoft this week will appeal against a landmark European Union antitrust decision and ask an EU court to suspend the order pending the appeal. "We believe we have a strong case," said Tom Brookes, a Microsoft spokesman in Brussels. The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, in March said Microsoft had illegally "bundled" its Windows Media Player audiovisual software with its Windows operating system and used its monopoly in the market for desktop personal-computer operating systems to illegally muscle its way into the market for software for more powerful computers called workgroup servers.

FeedDemon XSLT Challenge

FeedDemon XSLT Challenge 05/05/2004 03:37 PM

Jason Fried points out an interesting idea for an RSS reader: make it group items that link to the same story. This sounded like a simple task for FeedDemon's XSLT-based newspaper styling - I figured, just use the Muench ian Method to group items that have the same <link>. Problem solved!

Then I remembered that the RSS <link> element is the URL of the item itself rather than the URL of the story being discussed. Oops.

One possible solution is to group items by title, since items that talk about the same thing often have the same title. However, because this isn't always true, grouping items by title isn't entirely reliable. (If you're viewing this in FeedDemon, you can see what I mean by clicking here to apply a newspaper style that groups by title).

What's really needed is a way to group by the links within each item's description, but my limited XSLT experience has left me scratching my head over how to do this. So...are there any XSLT gurus out there who want to take a crack at this?

Getting ready for the Grand Challenge

Getting ready for the Grand Challenge 11/17/2003 11:40 AM
A few months ago the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, announced the Grand Challenge, a Las Vegas to Los Angeles road race in which a road race in which all the contestants have to be "autonomous motor vehicles" that can drive and navigate entirely without any human control. The prize for this robotic Cannonball Run is a cool million bucks, which apparently attracted so many entrants that DARPA had to winnow the field to just nineteen qualifiers, though they may had six more teams to make it an even twenty-five. The race is still on for March 13th of next year and we'll have full coverage here on Gizmodo. Read [Via TechDirt]...

asus_A730Back.jpg imageBy the end of July we should see a new Pocket PC model from Asus -- at least if the forked tongue of PDABuyer'sGuide can be believed (it can be). The A730 will have a 520MHz Intel PAX 270 processor, 64MB RAM/64MB ROM, and a 3.7-inch transreflective VGA display. Plus, expansion will be hot, with CF and SDIO built-in, but you won't need either to use the built-in Bluetooth or 1.3-megapixel camera. How about USB host, you might ask? How about you have your damned USB host and get out of my face?

The Asus A730 will run Windows Mobile 2003 SE, and should be available in a similarly-spec'd model with WiFi.
