Two seasonal goodies on Nerve.com for your clicking pleasure. First, a photo gallery with holiday-themed contributions from some of the online zine's regular contributors -- including a terrific X-rated cupcake shot from Siege (cropped thumbnail at left), whose work has been blogged here on BoingBoing before. The gallery is thankfully devoid of naughty Santas because, according to photo editor Whitney Lawson, the "treacly tradition... fall[s] into the same category as spiced rum and Kenny G's holiday album." Link (sorry, but paid registration or someone else's password required).

Next up, the latest experiment in Nerve regular Grant Stoddard's "I Did It for Science" series: "To attend a porn star's Christmas party." The party was an orgy in LA (yes, an actual orgy), hosted by a well-known adult entertainment biz couple. My dear BoingBoing readers, let it be known that I refuse to be outdone in the realm of party invites. I, too, received an Evite to this very same Christmas clusterfuck. I did not attend, but I can tell you (swear on a stack of mid '90s Wired Magazines) that said invitation included a very thorough FAQ with the line, "Q: Can I bang [female co-host's name]? -- A: Sure!" Last issue we began looking at the use of a person's e-mail address as the username needed for authentication in an identity management scheme. Usernames have to be unique - at least within their context. E-mail addresses need to be unique also, or else the mail won't get through. So it seems like a perfect match, right?

Wishing For A Video Game To Explain
Cancer To Kids

Wishing For A Video Game To Explain
Cancer To Kids
06/28/2004 05:22 AM
Every time you hear about the Make-A-Wish Foundation, it usually involves a kid who wants to meet an athlete, musician or movie star. Those requests probably aren't all that difficult to fulfill. However, when Ben Duskin, a child with Leukemia, decided he wanted a video game that could teach children what cancer was all about, it turned out to be a fairly difficult request. Eventually, though, the Foundation tracked down a game programmer from LucasArts who worked with Ben to create the game he wanted and which he hopes will help other kids understand what they're going through. They're now offering the game as a free download off their website. It doesn't sound like the most sophisticated game, but obviously that's not the point.

What's a namber? A namber is a word that acts as a mnemonic for a number. For example, 65 is drum, and 181 is push. A namber address uses an arbitrarily-chosen list of nambers to represent each of the numbers from 0 to 255 in order to assemble four words to represent any IP address. Metafilter.com's namber is earth .frog.brown.tooth, and mysteryrobot.com conveniently provides translation and forwarding to the real IP address.

Office 2003 Tool: Local Installation
Source Tool
05/28/2004 01:48 AM
The Local Installation Source Tool is a wizard to help manage your Local Installation Source (LIS) on computers running Microsoft Office 2003. The LIS Tool allows you to enable or disable LIS, and to move the MsoCache folder to a new volume. This download is intended for use by customers and network administrators with LIS issues who contact Microsoft Product Support Services. Local Installation Source is a Setup feature. When a user installs Microsoft Office 2003 from a CD or a compressed CD image on the network, Setup copies any required installation files to a hidden folder on the local computer. Microsoft Windows Installer uses this local installation source to install Office, and the local source remains available for repairing, reinstalling or updating Office later on. Users can install features on demand or run Setup in maintenance mode to add new features without their original media.

Be Cool

Be Cool 03/29/2005 02:08 AM

Anything but cool, I wanted my money back at the end of this one. Catching a John Travolta film is always a gamble and he was alright in this, playing his typical Vincent Vega character, but the rest of it was just crap. I expected to like Vince Vaughn's character more, but it took about two seconds for you to get his whole schtick and then it just became really really tiresome. I did laugh out loud once -- Cedric the Entertainer as a reformed gangbanger-turned-rapper/producer/millionaire rolls up with his posse and they're all wearing tshirts with basketball jerseys over them and Cedric has a **button-down** shirt with a jersey over it -- but that was the only highlight. Metacritic, I will never doubt you again.

Screenshot Textbased MSN Client is an MSN client with an ncurses interface. It is currently being developed on a BSD platform, and should support most of the Unix/BSD/Linux distributions. It requires OpenSSL to be installed.
License: Other/Proprietary License
Changes:
This release adds talkfilter and sound support. Ctrl-e and then a number 1-9 switches between open conversations. An -i option for specifying the initial status on login was added. Block/un-block/delete now takes the contact marked on the list. Colors were added to the menu to improve visibility. There is better error-handling when sending invalid messages etc. It now compiles on BSD again, fixes a bug where messages appeared in wrong windows, and fixes some color issues in the conversation list.

Easy Soulseek client for Macintosh means

Easy Soulseek client for Macintosh means
no more PC for me
07/29/2004 03:36 PM
Soulseek is my favorite P2P file-sharing network. Until recently though, the only functional Macintosh Soulseek client, Nicotine, has been a big hassle to install and run, requiring the Apple Developer Tools and X11 SDK. Now there's a new pre-compiled version of Nicotine. All you need is OS X Panther and Apple's free X11 X Window System. It was a simple install and works like a charm.

The result is that now I feel OK selling my PC laptop and buying a Powerbook. I love the ultra-portability of my supersmall and spritely Sony Vaio PCG-SRX77 and I'm sad to part with it. But at least the 12-inch Powerbook approaches sub-notebook size. And I'll finally be all Apple, all the time. Link (to eBay auction)

On Wednesday, the European Court judge overseeing the European Union vs. Microsoft antitrust case did what many observers thought he would not. He denied Microsoft's request that the ordered remedies (including the unbundling of Windows Media Player from Windows) be postponed. Whether or not Microsoft appeals his denial, the Redmond software giant said it will deliver to European OEMs starting in January a Windows-Media-Player-free version of Windows. Microsoft also will publish communications protocols, including some heretofore-unpublished Windows Server ones, as part of the judge's order.
