archos_av420.jpg imagePCMag checks in with a mostly positive review of the Archos AV420 Pocket Video Recorder, marred only by the public acknowledgement that the only DVD they could find in John Dvorak's office was a well-worn copy of Top Gun. I mean, they don't say that, exactly, but I think we can all safely infer from the picture that most of his columns are written with the Ride Into The Danger Zone scene playing over and over in the background.

It explains so much, really.

teac_dvd.jpg imageTeac will be releasing a portable DVD recorder on April 20th in Japan, with a thickness of 26.7mm (about an inch). Pretty slim if you ask me — according to Teac, it is "in the smallest class of consumer DVD recorders." It also has a DV port for connecting directly to digital video cameras. Sadly, it does not support anything fancy like dual layered discs.

sunbeam_voice_microwave.jpg imageGood morning, sunshines. If we were rising from our beds, blearily walking into the kitchen in search of coffee, I would make you oatmeal in this Sunbeam Microwave while listening to its in-built FM radio; perhaps a song about the hope of a new day. Then, after I had gone to work (in the next room), you could listen to the messages I had left for you on the microwave's integrated voice recorder. Messages like, "I have removed the shielding from this oven. The uneasy feeling you feel inside is the pinging and popping of your boiling liver. Also, this instrument of your utter destruction was a relative value at $90." (Thanks, Dennis!)

radioyourway.jpgFor you talk radio fans, Pogo! Products (they're that excited) offers their new RadioYourWay LX. Featuring a built in MP3/WMA player and a voice recorder, the LX also allows you to listen to and record both FM AND AM radio. I'd be remiss to out and say that this is the first AM-capable MP3 recorder out there, but it's the first I've seen, so there's that. It also looks strikingly like an ugly iPod, but its ability to schedule recording times using a daily or weekly timer function is pretty cool, so it's forgiven. It also lets you record from any external source straight to MP3 and comes with 128MB of memory for $200 (or 512MB for $250), with the option to expand past 1GB using its SD slot.

It's started shipping today, so if you can't get enough AM talk show radio, pick yours up now.

Put Down the Phone and Drive (and Take
Off the Headset, Too)

Put Down the Phone and Drive (and Take
Off the Headset, Too)
07/19/2004 04:44 PM
The Wall Street Journal reports on research showing hands-free cell phone talking while driving is unsafe at any speed: This is a purely public service announcement I make today: if you'd like to dramatically reduce your odds of finding yourself in an accident, don't talk on a cell phone while driving regardless of whether you're holding it or using a hands-free system. The cellular industry doesn't like it, sure, but the growing body of research reviewed in this article makes it clear that talking on a cell phone while driving has a significantly different impact on your ability to stay focused on the road than any other activity, including listening to the radio or talking to passengers. As the Car Talk guys bumper sticker says (see upper right), Drive Now, Talk Later! Studies to the contrary turn out not to be to the contrary, and have had the usual PR spin put on them. You know why we have anti-bacterial soap all across the U.S.? Because of a single study done on the cleanliness of street vendors in Mexico. It all traces back to that. A public-health crisis, producing more and more resistant strains of bacteria, results from companies choosing to use limited information to promote a message instead of performing more science to determine appropriate ways to market their products. The same is true here: cell companies could promote safer uses of phones, but their money is in pushing minutes (at the moment). When cell operators finally switch to unlimited monthly plans, they'll want people to talk less, just as AOL did when they switched from hourly billing to unmetered monthly service. When that switch happens, you can bet we'll see a 100-percent full-court press on restricting talking at all while driving. As a regular bike commuter, I am often in a position to see cars clearly perform precision bad driving maneuvers. About 95 percent of the time, the driver is talking on a cell phone. When I see someone driving erratically -- bad lane position, no signal, strange turns, sudden acceleration -- I start biking even more defensively. When I pass them or them me, I see them talking on a cell phone. This is anecdotal on my part, and I'm glad the science backs me up. It also tells me that when I see people driving poorly and they look like they're not on a cell phone,...

GPX SportX HW6805DT MP3 Headset

GPX SportX HW6805DT MP3 Headset 04/13/2005 08:57 AM

gpx_sportx.jpgGPX is launching this new over-the-shoulder SportX headset MP3 player which uses TransFlash memory cards for storage. The downside of that decision is that the SportX HW6805DT will be somewhat limited in the size of TransFlash cards, which currently only go up to around 512MB. The upside is that TransFlash is small, making the headset even lighter than if it used SD. Plus, as David Chait points out, since many MP3-playing phones use TransFlash, you'll be able to pop out the card from your phone and put it into the SportX.

The 128MB model is listed for pre-order for $80, and larger capacities are set to follow. Oh, and it has an FM radio tuner.

Jabra BT800 Bluetooth Headset Reviewed
(Verdict: Lots of Features, Lots of
Bulk)
04/05/2005 09:18 AM

bt800_rev.jpgFor the life of me, I can't figure out how to configure my phone to pair with my Bluetooth headset and still ring, which means I miss a lot of calls if I'm not paying attention. The (relatively) new Jabra BT800 headset has a built-in vibrate mode that would alleviate that problem, while giving me another: embarrassment. While the BT800 does feature an integrated LCD Caller ID read-out, it's also sort of huge, which makes my likelihood of wearing it anywhere outside of a tech convention pretty slim. If you don't mind the bulkiness, though, Mobileburn gives it high marks, with good battery life, excellent noise-cancelling features, and decent sound quality.

2in1Headset-Features.jpg imageI can't tell if Seidio's new 2 in 1 Headset is only for the Treo 600 or if they're just capitalizing on that smartphone's success, but either way the combination headphones/phone headset looks pretty decent, with one touch call answering, and in-line volume control and all the other things you'd expect from a hands-free kit. Plus, they sort of match the Treo's look, because they're both made of plastic.

bt400gii_headset.jpg imageConsidering the Bluetake BT400 GII Bluetooth headset? Even though it looks like a cast-off Romulan scout ship? That you have to put on your head? You probably better read this review at WhiningDog first. No offense to WhiningDog, but these Bluetooth headset reviews are only so much good without a comparison -- you can learn a lot about the features, but not so much about the relative sound quality. Still, they seem happy enough with it but when they complain about things about how it fits all you're really learning about, as a rule, is the shape of the reviewer's ears. When is someone going to start making a Bluetooth headset with a molded ear piece?

The MP-820BT has integrated Bluetooth which can, when paired with your mobile phone, route incoming calls over your headphones and use the built-in microphone to talk about without ever pulling the phone out of your pocket. It only has 256MB of RAM built-in, but it does have an integrated FM tuner, so for the more mobile among us it could be a slick way to go hands-free.
