TiVo Upgrade Locks Up Hacked Boxes?
TiVo Upgrade Locks Up Hacked Boxes?
07/12/2004 08:52 AM
Many people in the
TivoCommunity.com forums who have hacked their TiVos to add additional
hard disk space are finding that the latest firmware upgrade, 3.1.0c
(which started hitting boxes about two weeks ago), is causing
intermittent picture freezing and lock ups. These aren't people who
have done anything crazy to their boxes necessarily, either; Many of
them simply replaced dead, stock hard drives with new units. If you've
had a similar problem, I'd head over there and try to work it out
together. A group of concerned users working with TiVo will do a lot
more to fix the problem than sending an email to me would (hint
hint).

Video on Demand tie-in with TiVo shows a
glimpse of TiVo's plans?
06/13/2004 09:24 PMLast week TiVo revealed its intention to get into the content
distribution business, but they said little about the details of their
plan. Many assumed that TiVo would be aiming for an "on demand"
service that would tap into the Internet. Not quite.

Netflix and TiVo teaming up to bring
rental videos on demand
09/07/2004 04:57 AMThe majority of us that have cable or a dish have the capability to
do pay for view. I have always been very disappointed with pay for
view offerings, thus we rent video's on a regular basis. The wife also
gets them from the library which is the best deal in town. But now
Tivo and Netflix are proposing a deal where you can rent a video from
Netflix and have it downloaded directly into your TiVo via your
broadband connection.
This is a very smart move. I am sure the MPAA will be bitching
along with the broadband providers who are going to forced to adsorb
the extra bandwidth that this would create. [MSNBC]

Music Download Store Experimenting With
Demand-Based Pricing
Music Download Store Experimenting With
Demand-Based Pricing
01/08/2004 08:41 PMOne of the very good complaints about online music stores is that they
offer all songs at the exact same price - which doesn't make much
sense in the market place. So, one company is trying to test that out
by
offer
ing dynamic pricing for its downloadable songs. The songs all
start at the low low price of $0.10 per song, and then fluctuate based
on demand. The company is still paying the $0.67 per song price to
the music labels, so they're losing money on plenty of songs - but are
saying that's the cost of the experiment. After they've spent the
amount they've set aside, they'll go back to the old way of pricing.
There are a few problems with this. First, explicit dynamic pricing
tends to get a negative reaction from consumers - who feel they get
ripped off when someone else bought the same product from the same
store at a lower price. More importantly, though, true market pricing
isn't just a function of demand - but of supply and demand. In this
case, there's an infinite supply, so we're not really talking about
market pricing at all. Furthermore, this service competes against
plenty of other services that charge around a dollar for songs, so
there's a clear upper limit on what they can charge for any song, no
matter how popular. An interesting experiment, certainly, but not
necessarily indicative of market pricing.

Friends finale and NBC Tivo-b0rking --
TiVo Strikes Back
05/07/2004 10:49 AMFollowing up on yesterday's post about NBC's apparent attempts to b0rk
potential TiVoers of the Friends finale, BoingBoing reader Douglas
Clark says,
I am a loyal Tivo user and Tivo did send out a
message alert to users about the Friends episode. It was more along
the lines of "if you manually extend the time of a recording, you may
miss the beginning of the friends final episode." I find that Tivo is
pretty good about catching unusual start times and other wonky tricks
the networks play. The previous comment about HUT and ratings was
right on the money...
Link to previous BoingBoing post.
Tech maven Meg Hourihan
adds, "Even weirder is that I got a message on my Tivo warning me that
the finale of Friends would have abnormal times. The message warned
that if I wasn't just using the automatic "start on time" and "end on
time" settings (i.e. I manually set the start time as 8 PM) that I
might miss some. What makes things weirder and worse is that Tivo
still didn't record the whole show! I made sure my settings were what
the message instructed, and happened to watch the show live. Tivo
kicked in to record at 8:59 PM (which is what it listed the start time
as) but stopped at 9:59! According to the time on my digital cable
box, the program didn't end until 10:03 PM. So if I hadn't watched it
live, I would have missed the last four minutes. Seems like a major
screw-up on Tivo's part, especially after sending out that
message!"

Intel and Tivo Team Up on Tivo-to-Go
(But How?)
06/06/2005 12:09 AMReuters is running a story about Intel that is chocked full of goo
info, including information that their 'Manitoba' mobile chipset has
finally found a customer in mmO2 Pic (the Manitoba came out two years
ago, to little fanfare, let alone actual adoption by phone
manufacturers). But the big news is that Intel will be working with
Tivo to provide Tivo-to-Go functionality in future laptop chipsets,
like their popular Centrino.
What that is, though, is unclear. Is it just a branding initiative?
Tivo-to-Go already works on laptops (that's half the point), so will
it be some sort of native support that makes it easier to move the
Tivo content around? We don't know—the article is very
vague—but at least Tivo is getting some name dropping love from
a mega-vendor (considering it was unlikely they were going to get much
help from Microsoft, considering they sell a competing product to
Windows XP Media Center). (Thanks, Pat!)
