12/03/2003 03:50 PMConfirmation that DoCoMo has a combination 3G/WiFi cellphone in the

would be able to use wireless Voice over IP at the office and then
roam on the 3G cellular network everywhere else. We're assuming you'd
also be able to use the phone at WiFi hotspots, but that isn't clear

I couldn't get
the fish to give me a good translation on this page, but I think we
can get the gist. A new phone from Fujitsu, running Windows CE .NET
(and possible a Linux version?), CF slot, and (here's the good stuff)
802.11b. So the question is, how long before someone writes a program
that will capture dialed cellular numbers then switch live calls over
to WiFi whenever the phone can find an open access point?

Won't Be Able To Get Phone Service From
Ma Bell Any More
07/22/2004 03:13 PMAT&T keeps on changing. It seems you never can be quite sure what
they're going to offer, what they're going to kill, and what they're
going to spin off. However, they clearly do realize that the telecom
environment they're in these days is quite different than it's been in
the past. They've been ramping up their VoIP efforts, and following
the ruling that says the RBOCs don't need to share their lines, it
appears AT&T has decided to throw all their residential voice eggs
into the VoIP basket. Thus, they're
no longer
selling long distance phone service to residential customers.
They will still sell to businesses (where the money is for them
anyway) and will still support existing AT&T phone customers, but for
the first time, you will no longer be able to get traditional
telephone service from AT&T to your home. Of course, between VoIP and
the eventual wireless MVNO plan they're going to offer, it looks like
AT&T may be the first major telco to realize that many people don't
really need a traditional voice line at all any more. Who would have
thought that AT&T might lead the way (though, perhaps out of
necessity, not vision)?

MobileTracker is reporting that Cingular will be
getting their own version of the RIM BlackBerry 7100* series, branded
as the 7100g. The keyboardless T-Mobile 7100t has been a relative success for the company,
despite recent issues with the network access
from the carrier. UK carrier Vodafone has their own
version of the 7100 which is essentially the same product as
T-Mobile's, despite a new external case. That's basically the same
deal here, as far as I can tell—don't expect anything
revolutionary.

Seems that the 7100t isn't the only new BlackBerry
phone coming from RIM, as Vodafone has announced the exclusive
distribution of the 7100v, an even more traditionally shaped handset
that appears to be essentially a re-packaged version of the 7100t.
With the same funky QWERTY keyboard, the 7100v supports a much wider
range of languages in its character recognition software SureType,
including English, French, German, Italian and Spanish (hopefully
those will be available for download to the 7100t here in the
States).
Expect to see the 7100v in Europe and Australia starting in
October.

My goddamn Windows machine is dying, which is less
than awesome. Hopefully I can get this out to you before it decides to
reboot itself again.
Anyway, MSNBC's Krakow took the new BlackBerry 7100t out for a spin
- available only on T-Mobile - and it looks really nice. Not only are
the internals decent, with a quad-band, multi-network radio,
Bluetooth, and an ample screen, but the new keyboard - you know, the
really strange 20-key QWERTY version - reportedly gets the job done,
thanks in large part to an extra-strength 'SureType' predictive text
software.
And what do you know? They tossed in a free picture of the upcoming
Nokia 9300 Communicator [pictured right], too. I like how these guys
work.

What's The Difference Between DRM And A
Virus?
06/23/2004 11:06 AMOver the past few days a number of sites have commented on the fact
that the new Beastie Boy album
comes with
copy protection (though, apparently not in the US or the UK,
according to some). While this set off the usual
argumen
ts about
why DRM
is bad, The Register has rewritten the story as if
t
he DRM is a virus or similar malware. They may have a point. The
DRM is silently installed without alerting the user as soon as they
put the CD into their computer. It prevents their computer from
functioning the way it was designed to. In fact, the article suggests
the fact that it's installed without asking the end user or getting
permission may constitute a crime. I'm not entirely sure, but I think
the CDs do note on the case that they come with copy protection, so it
is possible that sticker could be considered "letting the user know."
Still, this does raise some important questions about DRM and whether
or not it will violate any anti-spyware law that's being discussed,
since most of them focus on the fact that they're installed without
explicit permission.
