Toshiba Develops Prototype "World's
Smallest" Fuel Cell
06/24/2004 02:38 PMPCWorld is reporting that Toshiba is releasing a fuel cell this
year that is being billed as the "World's Smallest," an always-dubious
claim, but undeniably appealing, as Toshiba's .9 by 2.2 by .4 inch
cell can produce 100 milliwatts of power over 20 hours with just two
cubic centimeters of methanol. Oh, actually, as I read this again the
small unit a prototype -- it's a notebook-class version they
intend to release later in the year, which we sort of already knew
about.

Toshiba Introduces Still More 3D Display
Technology
04/15/2005 09:58 AM
Toshiba brings another 3D display technology to bear,
where they use an ultra-thin film that acts as a sort of lens to
control the direction of light exiting an LCD panel. This technology
led to the display you see at the right, which is intended to be
placed on a flat surface (think: playing chess using a 3D display). As
with all 3D displays, you'll need some specialized software —
Toshiba's software allows for 15 different angles to the left and
right, for a total of 30 angles of display. May not seem like much,
but it's 29 more angles than what you're currently looking at (unless
you work for Toshiba).

Brazil looks to close technology gap
with open source
11/18/2003 01:23 AM A new policy set in place by the administration of
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva aims to move its systems
from expensive Microsoft
products to a Linux -based
platform in order to cut computer costs. Sergio Amadeu, head of
Brazil's National Information
Technology Institute , also hopes that the move to open source
will help ease the digital divide in his country:
[He] argues that the gap between the needy and
the wealthy will only deepen unless the poor have easy access to the
technology that the rich have at their fingertips, especially in
developing countries like Brazil.
IBM has entered into an agreement with the Brazilian government
to explore the move to open source.

07/23/2004 02:53 PMMATT GALLANT-- Continuing the parade
of things that you can't actually get yet: As they say: "Small, cheap,
and good: pick two."
But no! Or so says the University of Houston, who have claimed to
developed a small, cheap, and good fuel cell using thin film solid
oxides.
Small: a fuel cell with the volume of four sugar cubes can power a
laptop computer; one the size of two soda cans can power a house.
Cheap: does not use the ultra-pure and exotic materials of standard
fuel cells.
Good: thin film solid oxides have a 60-70% efficiency, and run at
half the temperature of normal solid oxide fuel cells, at a mere 450
to 500 degrees Celsius.
Wow! I can't wait to put a tiny 500°C battery in my lap.
