Recording industry to demand
fingerprints of music listeners
06/05/2004 04:32 PM
Isn't the recording industry silly for trying this? I'm glad it's wasting its time on this fool's errand. I hope Veritouch gets millions from the RIAA for this rotten idea, which has a zero percent chance of catching on.
The RIAA is hoping that a new breed of music player which requires biometric authentication will put an end to file sharing. Established biometric vendor Veritouch has teamed up with Swedish design company to produce iVue: a wireless media player that allows content producers to lock down media files with biometric security. This week Veritouch announced that it had demonstrated the device to the RIAA and MPAA.

This visual music search engine lets you type in the name of an artist and it displays related artists. I thought I'd stump it by entering "Robert Crumb" (the cartoonist, who used to play tenor banjo in one of my favorite bands, The Cheap Suit Serenaders). I'll be damned if Music Plasma didn't display my very favorite musicians right next to his name. Link (Thanks, Anthony!)

Both Technorati and Feedster have changed their look in the last few days, and are doing special things for the political junkies among us. (See this from Feedster; this from Technorati; note the similar URLs, too.) I'm holding my breath slightly, because both have also been experiencing some performance problems in recent days. It would be a shame if such useful services, getting seriously noticed for the first time by people outside the blogosphere, give a less-than-excellent first impression.

MSN did the thumbnail thing a while ago. I didn't think it added too much.

Google in the past has let small Web site owners offer Google search tools for free. In a bid to expand its empire, it now will share search revenue with those who have Google search on their sites. [...]

Free tools at labs.google.com let Web publishers customize search and direct it toward their own customers. For instance, a Web site for a computer products company would be assured that searches for "mice" resulted in peripherals, not rodents.

Windows desktop search tools

Windows desktop search tools 04/04/2005 11:04 PM

Search is all the rage these days. Especially desktop search. While both Microsoft and Apple have promised robust search functionality for upcoming versions of their respective operating systems, the search void has recently been filled by a handful of competing applications. In fact, the apps from Google and Yahoo have just recently exited beta status.

In this review, we look at five of the main desktop search utilities for Windows in an attempt to separate the wheat from the chaff. How well do they index your hard drive? What file types do they support? Which one has the best interface? We stack 'em up side-by-side. Take a look and see whose search cuisine reigns supreme.
